The Allston Beat:

See the girl walked down the street
The pretty one from the local university
Cameto school to study hard
now she's distracted py the parties down in her backyard

She never wanted to but now she's moved right in
And now she knows exactly what's been happening
Forget the things people say, forget the rumors you've heard
you know that living in Allston is the only way

See the cat walking down the street
His brain box is shaved, Doc Marten kickers on his feet
He couldn't live anywhere else in town
without a dirty look or nasty word
from someone trying to put him down

He isn't really bad, he's not a thug or a cheat
He likes to live his life to the Allston Beat
Forget the rumors you've heard, forget the things people say
you know that living in Allston is final word

See Harvard Ave. in the morning light
not much destruction from the wildness of an Allston night
You would have loved it if you could have been here
amongst the laughter and 9,000 Barrooms selling beer

We walk the streets until dark and then we stay up till dawn
We have some fun daddy-o you know it's really gone
With all the things you can do and all the freaks you can meet
that's why we're shaking and quaking to the Allston Beat

Brighton Memories:

Hanging out on Brighton Ave.
Watching ladies walk with daily chores
Laundry baskets, grocery bags
disappear behind windows and doors
Canary yellow houses stand
next to lots where school boys hide in trees
Pairs of dogs that wag their tails
shouts of joy and scrams for wounded knees

Brighton memories never change from year to year
so I'll never have to look to find a home

Children cry on benches clear
Water cheeks are filled with roses red
Old men smile beamingly
ask if you'll repeat what you just said
Party on the block each year
lots of beer that goes right to your head
Old men wander aimlessly
ask if you'll repeat what you just said

Jimmy:

Jimmy's on his way to work-he grabs a bite to eat
Walks down to the subway-he wants to get a seat
Sees a pregnant lady-going for the only one
He slides into it, turns away-his day has just begun

Wake up Jimmy; you're not the only man on earth
Wake up Jimmy; you were not crowned and blessed at birth
Wake up Jimmy; there are other people out there too
Wake up Jimmy; the world doesn't spin around you

Friday night, Jimmy's drunk and hanging with some friends
It seems the party's just begun, he hopes it never ends
At 3 AM his neighbors call saying"Jimmy it's too loud"
He tells them off and turns it up-yeah,Jimmy's really proud

Jimmy is a ruler-at least in his own mind
But Jimmy is a loser-he's selfish all the time

Jimmy's got a date tonight-his girlfriends's looking sweet
She swings on by to pick him up, he saya"Baby, it's mt treat"
They have some burgers and some fries and two large Cherry Cokes
But when it's time to pay the bill he says"Oops, I guess I'm broke!"

Answering Machine:

A cracked voice that never changed
just started using different patter
laughs at the words I left
although he doesn't know just why.
Two friends, too removed;
ten-year olds get ten years older.
He could finish my sentences but now he can't discern my lies.

Friends come, friends go,
some feelings slowly die.
But I don't know about the things he's seen
with all the effort we spent chasing different dreams.
He sounded nervous on my answering machine.

I was out walking in the rain.
I had to get my head together.
Sometimes I fear I'm year away
from all the promises I made.
I turned and headed in,
though I couldn't findmy resolution
and I remembered we could always count
upon the other putting everything right.

I fear he hopes
that I will catch myself.
But I don't know about the things he's seen
with all the effort we've spent chasing different dreams.
He sounded nervous on my answering machine

Hey you, whats up man?
I thought I'd just check in.
I hoped you would be around now,
but I missed you again.
Give a call, if you want to,
when you get a chance.
I haven't seen you in a while but,
you know how it gets, you know how it gets

Catchwords and running gags,
don't even seem to close the distance,
while I try my very best to make you laugh as we did then.
And, when it's time to go,
we're both searching for the right conclusion.
I'll know how less and miss you more before I see you once again.

Friends come, friends grow.
Some feelings surely die.
But I don't know about the things he's seen
with all the effort we've spent chasing different dreams.
He sounded nervous on my answering machine.

Miss Understood:

Train late and payphone wait
Penn Station preachers in a frenzied state
Unfold phone number past an hour late
had no idea it was a chosen day, but

Only Miss Understood really hears what I say
to her I never repeat
Little Miss Understood, she was the first in the fray
and she will never repeat

These cab rides can be so strange.
Crawling through red lights while I call your name.
Tears make the neon lights just run like rain.
My friend's picture who's just lost his frame, 'cause.

One year has passed and more have gone.
We can't let madness get us on the run.
Hold on to what you love before it's gone.
With any luck, maybe she'll hear this song, 'cause

Pleasing Malady:

There's a contradiction deep in my heart
Some days it wins some days it loses
But try as I might it's a constant reminder

I spin this malady around again
Each day I free it from my pen

On the good day it invites me inside
We have a beer, Forget our fears
We jam all night long and miss work in the morning

So I've found a way to even it out
I take the joy, ignore the hatred
My malady grows ever pleasing each moment

I spin this malady around again
Each day I free it from from it's pen

Emily Slumber:

Emily Slumber sleeps thorugh the haze
of a long lonely June afternoon
She doesn't number all of her days
or the nights that she spends with the moon
She is a wounder to all her friends
the ones that say they're her friends

Emily Slumber drinks in the cool
of the star laden dark of the sky
Thoughts ripped asunder by the sound
that you hear in her sigh
It is no blunder that she's alone,
she is painfully shy

She doesn't cry
She always smiles at all the days in passing
She doesn't try
try to explain all of her ways fantastic

Emily Slumber picks up the cup
that she's filled with the dust of her life
She doesn't lumber, she dances around
She's amazing light. She isn't under
any big clouds she shines with the bright of the sun

Homeward Bound:

It's five o' clock, I'm on my way home
I don't want you to be alone
It's just my luck to see a group of my friends
You know the story, you know how it ends
We're at the Model with a couple of ales
another round, you know it never fails
I check my watch and it's a quarter 'til nine
I'm kinda drunk and I'm feelin' fine

I'm in my cups, I'm feeling no pain
I have to go but I just can't refrain
because the lads have bought one more round
My head is swimming and I'm falling down
I cannot walk, no, I cannot stand
two of the boys have to give me a hand
I'm laughing hard because I am well spent
Hope you're not mad, you'll not totally bent

I get home and you are not there
I guess your right because it really is fair
You left a note that said you're out with a mate
I fucked up and now it's my turn to wait
I am sorry for the hurt that I caused
I should have thought. I should have paused
So take a lesson, don't be stupid or lame
'cause when she's gone you'll have no one to blame

Tuesday:

With you a Monday is a Tuesday, and then the end's not far.
I'll do my best to take your blues away, and send them somewhere far.
Yeah, I got a magic carpet, (woo!) I'll take you to the moon.
We'll grab a bottle and a blanket, we won't be back too soon.

Somehow the sky just clears up and shines for you and I.
You walk in and I just cheer up, feel like I'm ten feet high.
I got vision for the future, it's little short of a plain.
It's a handful of the groove mixed with helping who I can.

Big Empty Stein:

Sit in the kichen at the end of the day
Have a beer and let the tension melt away
You drink it from a stein, present from Helga and Klaus
The Greman couple living downstairs in your house

Helga is screaming at her husband again
Seems like their diffculties just won't end
The shouting and the threats-you know you've heard'em before
It's just a part of living on the second floor

Looks like you've reached the bottom
Seems like the perfect time
To crack another cold one
Fill that Big Empty Stein!

Look out the window at the building next door
See the reflection coming from the first floor
Right below you, see the shoving begin
You know as always, neither one will win

His hands 'round her throat, you see her gasping for air
A glint in his eye, you know he does not care
She reaches back, grabs her big empty stein
And cracks him in the skull-he won't get up this time

Can't Say:

Six Years:

You know the people you invite for tea
And sometimes you can get your drinks for free
Down at the local bar, good thing it's not too far
for you to walk back home

Six years is a long time to live in one place
Everybody knows your name or recognizes your face
Six years is a long time

There is a place that you can call your own
Where you can hang your hat or use the phone
A place to keep your toys, you know the paper boy
will never miss the porch

You get your mail and all your presents here
It's where you read the books you hold so dear
It's where you find your bed, to rest your weary head
and dream the life you love

Don't Go Yet:

Don't go yet, 'cause the party has just begun
and we wouldn't want you to miss out on the fun
Don't go yet, 'cause the party is just for you
and if you left we wouldn't know what to do

The party starts on Monday
carries on 'til Wednesday
picking up steam on Friday
get more beer on Saturday
sleep it all off on Sunday, yeah

Don't go yet, 'cause the feeling is oh so right
and we really need you to help us through the night
