VOCALS..... Danielle Rene Blanchard |
Like a Lover – Danielle takes us to Brazil with her infectious interpretation of a standard jazz piece that brings back haunting memories of previous song stylists like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. Not to say Danielle’s version sounds like them, just the opposite. Project them into the arrangement and hear it done by all of them. Danielle opens her heart and lets them all in. Can you imagine all three of them sharing phrases and singing this tune together? Wow!
Ghost of a Chance – Danielle captures the essence of the 1930’s in this lovely, emotion-laden song of despair. The power of this rendition lies in Danielle’s brooding interpretation of the lyrics. Always laid back and contained, she looks for the positive outcome, but never pleads. She leaves us wanting more. If it were with me, she’d have all the chance in the world!
That’s All – Once again, Danielle returns to what Danielle does best. She teases and plays with our musical emotions. Her opening romantic phrases seduce us, and we are dancing in the moonlight with love in our heart. Don’t get fresh though, because she will slap you with a cool swing backhand. Ah, but making up is so sweet, and she vocally soothes our feelings, asking us to adore her. How can we resist?
Caught a Touch of Your Love – You can’t help catching a touch of Danielle’s vocal genius in this underplayed and controlled interpretation of a well-crafted song. With smooth restraint she caresses every note as she projects the lyrics through the phrase, stopping only to emphasize the important. She keeps us involved and excited, anticipating more. It’s like a good meal with fine wine. You’ll wish for seconds…time after time, you’ll come back for more of Danielle’s music.
Dance With Me Slow – With a beautifully clear vocal tone, Danielle delivers an ethereal interpretation of her melodic lines. No one can imitate her, and no one can deliver the sexy, sultry innuendo of this music like she does. The melodies seem to flow from her heart and embrace the listener. We are surrounded by romance, and after hearing this song, you will be in love with Danielle.
Twisted – Back to reality! As soon as you expect one thing from Danielle, she gives you something different. Just when you think Danielle has reached her musical stylistic limit, she breaks new barriers. Danielle speeds through the melodic line without missing a beat or dropping a note. The scat section is a true joy to listen to. It’s refreshing to hear it sung, rather than screamed. I don’t know how fast a person can sing a lyrical line, but Danielle seems to set the record, and does it with great style and class. This is a vocal jazz joy!
Nature Boy – This song has been recorded by some of the world’s leading song stylists. Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Sarah Vaughan are just a few. Danielle adds a new dimension that incorporates the mystical, exotic and seductive. The repeated rhythmic pattern is almost hypnotic. Danielle succeeds in transcending this complicated melodic line in her almost a cappella rendition. She keeps her vocal focus and intonation right in the center of the pitch. She experiments with tempos and sensuous vocal inflections. How refreshing it is to be entertained and entranced by such a marvelous vocal musician.
Lazy Afternoon – This selection keeps us on our magical musical tour of the island paradise we all like to escape to in our dreams. Soft summer rain drips from every note. Though this is a calm interpretation, Danielle has the ability to keep the energy alive. She moves through the melodic line with daring flexibility, and the ease with which she does it belies the difficulty involved in doing it. Once again, the instrumentalists are talented and intelligent, complementing rather than overpowering Danielle. Their restraint and musicianship shine through the wonderful arrangement.
You Don’t Know Me – This is a great listen—Danielle at her vocal best. One minute she’s a jazz singer, a night club torch song artist. The next, you get her mixed up with a country star, soul singer or rock diva. When all is sung and done, we come to understand that Danielle is right…we “don’t know her”…and her musical talents are still to be explored and discovered.
Foggy Night – You want more you say? How about sassy! It’s so refreshing to hear a blues tune sung with a laid back, in-tune vocal quality. When Danielle reaches for a high note, she flips it up, touches the top and floats back to earth. When she growls out a low note, the tone doesn’t disintegrate. She never lets go of her vocal control while using her extraordinary talent to decorate and enhance the dynamics of each phrase.
