I saw you standing across the street
Your army colored hat pulled down over your ears.
Your brown jacket almost blended in with the stores behind you,
Except for that white lining that showed around your neck.
It went all the way up to your hair beacause your shoulders were so
hunched from the cold.
Your hands were buried in your pockets, and you stood there leaning
against the cold buildings and staring at the sidewalk
You were so still that after a surreal eternity of watching you, I began
to wonder if you were real.
The November day stood as still as you did.
My eyes were fixed on you just as your feet were fixed to the ground.
I felt connected to you, and I couldn't stop looking.
Then, with all the slowness of a distant memory,
You lifted your head and saw me.
The world began to move again, and blood once more flowed through my
body.
I felt foolish and turned away, pushing my way through the Christmas
shoppers, losing myself in their security,
Trying to forget the lifetime that had just passed in the road between
us.
I'm not sure who you were or if you remember me,
But I'll always remember you and your brown coat.
And I wonder how long I would have stood there that day on Main Street
If you had never seen me.
