What Would They Think? Why Would We Care?
The launching of a new campaign...
They don't look too happy with us...
Setting: A heavily guarded hotel, somewhere in Europe. A dull roar can be heard throughout the city as the Backstreet Boys fans stand outside the hotel, eagerly awaiting a glimpse of their men. Inside, teen god Nick Carter is surfing the Internet on a rare night off, as the other group members are sitting around the room involved in various activities. Kevin is reading Fortune magazine, Brian is watching ESPN, Howie is on the phone with his mother, while AJ is picking out his next body decoration (i.e., he's getting a new tattoo). Suddenly, teen god Nick Carter lets out a shout as he stumbles across the Everybody Giddy Up Cinema [the background music swells to a crest..]. All of the group members leap up from their activities to surround the computer. Stimulating conversation ensues...
Nick: "Whoa. Look at this site. Publicity must have
leaked! They know about my book! Wait
a minute...I'm
much prettier than Justin Timberlake."
Howie: "I have two fans! They put a good picture of me
on the web! I've got to go call my
mom!" [He
reaches for his cell phone.]
AJ: "Let's check out the 'Booty Call' section..."
Brian: [giggles] "I used to love the Culture Club! Wait,
there's a reunion tour? How can we
get tickets?
Kevin: "Shut up, cuz. Remember, we've sold 40.78 million
record worldwide, not 40 million.
We should have our people inform them of this grave mistake. WAIT!
We are not a
boyband! We are serious ARTISTÉ! We have moved on to
the next level. Why oh
why..."
Fade out into the dark European night...

Did this really happen?
No.
Will it ever happen?
Probably not.
Do we care if it happens?
Not really.
You see, we have something to counter the "What Would They Think" Campaign. The "Why Would We Care" Campaign. Think about it this way, folks. The Backstreet Boys and *N Sync get maybe one day off a week, and that's being generous. Do you really think they would spend their spare time looking up information about themselves? Doubtful. We think they know if they wear boxers or briefs. Granted, they appreciate their fans. We understand that. But do they really care about the random and meandering thoughts of two anonymous fans such as ourselves?
So what would they think? Why would we care? They're not going to see it.
