I had more fun at this concert than I've ever had in my life!!!! I've been really lucky the past couple of months, I've became very good friends with Big Mike's girlfriend Angie. The Louisville show was the first show we were at together and I owe her a lot for everything she's done for me in Louisville and Cleveland. Angie only lives about 40 minutes from me, so we're close enough that we can see each other pretty often. She went to the Cleveland show with us and we had a great time. This review is going to be a little different because I'm going to tell about the whole experience, not just the show.
We got to Cleveland about 5 and found the enterance to the backstage area. The security guard wouldn't let us in because she said we weren't on the list. We got there before Mike had so he hadn't told them yet. About 5 minutes later, Mike and Steven pulled in and we pulled up next to them. The security guards wouldn't let them in either!!! We had to sit there for a few minutes while they figured out who they were talking to. Steven looked over and waved at us, but Mike was a little upset. Finally they let us all in. We went on in and parked, Mike and Steven pulled right in the back of the arena and by the time we got up there Steven was already gone to his dressing room.
We walked around with Mike and ended up outside of the dressing rooms. I thought they were all there, so I was hoping Joe would walk out any minute. After a while Mike came out and took us back out behind the stage and told us to wait there for him. We sat there for a while and just watched everything that was going on. The stage was already set up and but people were running around doing last minute things. We got to meet they're manager Jimmy Eyers and a lot of the crew, they were really nice, everyone was. Before we knew it 2 more cars pulled in. Joe, Tom and Brad got out of the first one, and Joey got out of the second one. Joe came around the front of the car and walked about 2 feet away from us. As he went passed he looked at each of us and said hi!!! I thought I said hi back, but Angie and Veronica said I just stared at him. Well I always wondered what I'd do if I met him and I found out, I froze. He went on passed and I watched him walk back to the dressing room. I turned around and Brad was right in front of me laughing and Tom was behind him smiling. I don't even remember seeing Joey walk past hehe. Anyway, we were all pretty excited because of what Joe did. We sat there for a little while and Mike showed up with 2 laminated backstage passes for me and Veronica, so we could go anywhere we wanted to. We could have went to the meet and greet but we didn't. We were pretty happy cause we'd just got to see them and they're was about 70 people back there already. At the time I really didn't think about it, but now I wish we would have went.
We looked around for a while and then we went and ate. They always have catering so we got to eat with the crew, Russ and everyone else, but the boyz. While we were eating, Mike told us that when Joe walked passed us everyone was laughing at the way we were looking at him. Mike was with a bunch of security guards at the time and they all seen us. Then we realized why Brad and Tom were laughing and smiling at us. Guess we looked pretty funny. By the time we were done, 7 Mary 3 was on stage. This was they're last night with Aerosmith so a couple of the guys from Aerosmith's crew and Mike grabbed they're guitar tech, brought him backstage and taped him to a chair so he couldn't move. Then they carried him up and sat him in the middle of the stage for the rest of their set. We walked out front and watched him for a while, it was pretty funny! We came backstage again and watched them come off stage. Mike brought they're lead singer over and introduced him to us, he was really nice, I was really surprised at how nice he was, the whole band was.
After they were gone we went out to see if we could see anyone we knew. I was suppose to meet my friend Chad there, but I couldn't find him. Angie and Veronica went to find Veronica's friend and I just stayed down front waiting for him. I didn't see anyone else I knew which was kinda strange. Finally they came back and Chad got there. We talked to him for a little while then Mike told us to go backstage, we stood on the side of the stage and watched the boyz go onstage then we went back out front. We got to stand right in front of Joe's mic, so I was pretty happy. Another thing about this show, the front row was pretty much a variety of people including guys and wholesome looking girls. Not the usual what ever you call them!
The show was great like it always is!! They started out with Back In The Saddle again. (I'm hoping someone else will send me a review, because I stood there watching Joe all night and didn't notice much else :) Steven wasn't all over the stage like he was in Louisville, but he got around enough. Joe sounded great, better than I've ever heard him. Joey smiled a lot and seemed to be having a good time. Brad really looked good, he was wearing this blue jacket with a purple shirt. I don't think he came over to our side of the stage any, he pretty much stayed on his side of stage. Tom came over to our side a lot. Mike kept planting himself in front of me so I couldn't see Joe!!! I kept telling him to move and he'd move his head so I could see. Once he found out how much I liked Joe, he teased me all night about it. Joe would come up to his mic and I'd look at Mike and tell him to move and he'd look up at Joe then back at me and roll his eyes and move away. He's a really great guy once you get to know him. And I'm sure the other people in the front row seen this, at times he was even dancing a little!! I'm talking about Big Mike. He always seems to be in a great mood when Angie's around.
They did a couple of different songs, Angel and Kiss Your Past Good-bye. I've heard Angel once before but this time it sounded a lot better. I know there's some people hoping to hear that one again and thought they were just doing it for the new album, but you never know what they'll play at a show. One of the big highlights of the show was when Steven turned around and pulled the back of his pants down a little and you could see he was wearing a blue g-string :) Looked pretty good too!!!! At the beginning of Pink Steven dropped his harmonica, then changed the words around in the song, nothing new there!!! We left during Sweet Emotion and went and stood beside the stage. Joe played a little bit of Blue Christmas and it sounded really good. Again Joey didn't throw out any drum sticks, that I could tell, guess there must be a shortage!! We watched them go off stage then we went back and sat down to wait for them to come back out. They didn't do the aftershow because they were going back to Boston. We watched the crew tear down the set and load it on to the trucks. Then about a half an hour later, Joe, Tom and Joey came out and went to they're car. Brad came out by himself then Steven. He walked over close to us smiling and said to Angie "you got me good" which had something to do with a little private joke they have going on. then he went on to the car. We stayed there and waited for Mike he drove Steven to the airport, he's always with them, but when they go home to Boston he travels with the crew. For the next couple of hours we sat around and watched everything that was going on. If your ever wondering why they start tearing the set down so fast after the show it's because it takes so long. we left at 1:45 and they still weren't done.
That's it, I finally know what it's like to be backstage and see what goes on. It's pretty exciting. We didn't see the boys a lot. Tom and Joey came out and walked around a few times but mostly they stayed back in they're dressing rooms. We got to meet so many people associated with the boyz. We had a lot of fun back there. Everytime someone in the crew would walk past they would joke or make a face at us. Chris, the blond that always stands in front of the stage and takes Steven's things always had something funny to say to us. I think a lot of people wouldn't believe just how nice all these people really are. Mike let us keep our passes, but I have no idea if we'll use them again. January 6th is the last show for a while so who know's whats going to happen. I took some pictures of Angie and Mike and me and Veronica with Mike, I'll have them up soon. It's hard to believe something like this could happen after all these years but it finally did. All I can say is never give up hope of meeting the boyz because if you want it bad enough it will happen. I wish every Aero Fan could have the experience that I just had in Cleveland. Thanks to Angie and Mike I'm probably one of the happiest people on this earth.
The Venue: Close to being sold out. Only tickets that remained were high up behind the stage. Security was checking all bags to get in. Security during the show was very tight looking for smoking and cameras. Parking was $10. Seats were awesome...second row, center section. Nice and close and personal. Thanks AF1 for making up for the ticket disaster at Dayton!
Stage and other things: Stage set up was pretty much the same as usual, though this stage is pretty wide. Seven Mary Three opened, and since this was their last night with Aerosmith, the Aero-road crew made it a special evening. About three songs into their set, Big Mike and a member of the Aero road crew come out on stage carrying one of the Seven Mary Three road crew taped to a lawn chair. They set him down facing the audience, and every time
he tried to move the chair, they would come back out and make him face forward. Then Tom's tech comes out with more duct tape and applies more tape. Then another of the crew came out and put silver panties on the guy's head, and a cigarette in his mouth.
After awhile, the roadie comes out, takes the cigarette out of the guy's mouth, walks to the front of the stage, flicks off the ashes and then puts it back in his mouth. Finally they ripped the tape off, and let the guy go. But they weren't done yet. During the last song (Cumbersome), Aerosmith's crew came out and starting disassembling Seven Mary Three's drum kit, right during the middle of the song. By the time the song was over, the
drummer was just sitting there with nothing to play on since the crew had taken the entire kit away. At least it did make their set a whole lot more interesting than the last time we saw them.
Fashion Notes:
Steven: Yellow and black striped pants, with his leg brace underneath. Black tank top, green long overcoat, green Mad Hatter hat.
Joe: Silver brocade shirt, long leather jacket, and floor length black crushed velvet coat with gold lining. Black leather pants.
Brad: Black pants, dark wine-colored shirt, medium length turquoise jacket with 4-button sleeves.
Tom: Gray and black striped suit, black silk shirt with the top open.
Joey: Started out with a silver jacket on.
Set List:
Onstage at8:50 pm Back in the Saddle: Joe played a black 6 string bass/guitar, Brad played his red Strat, and Tom played his woodtone 4 string.
Love in an Elevator: Joe switched to his Joe Perry model Les Paul (JPLP). This was a little longer than what we heard in Dayton, with a little more extended ending.
Falling In Love: Joe played his Joe Perry model Les Paul (JPLP), Brad played the red Strat, and Tom switched to a white fretless 4 string bass. Joe was having monitor problems.
Eat the Rich: Joe played his Black Beauty, Brad played his red LP, and Tom played his 5 string.
Angel: Couldn't believe we actually heard this. Joe switched back to his JPLP.
Rag Doll: Joe played lap steel, Brad played his gold LP, and Tom played his 5 string. After this was over, Steven had them turn all the house lights up, looking for somebody that was
shining a laser pointer in his eyes.
Dream On: Joe played his Black Beauty, Brad played his red LP, and Tom played his 5 string. Lots of lighters in the audience. During this, Steven through a bottle of water into the crowd and then someone through it back up onstage, sending water everywhere. One of the road crew went slithering around on his belly with a towel cleaning up the puddles.
Janie's Got a Gun: Joe played his JPLP, Brad played a wood Telecaster, and Tom played his 5 string.
What Kind of Love Are You On: Joe played his blue Telecaster, and Brad played a burgundy Rickenbacker. Tom played his 5 string.
Kiss Your Past Goodbye: Joe played his Black Beauty, Brad played his red Strat. Tom played his 5 string, and played part of this with a mallet. This comes across really well live.
Same Old Song and Dance: Great version! Joe played a Gibson Country Gentleman, Brad played his gold LP, and Tom played his purple 4 string bass. Brad did a lot of solos during this. Tom did a nice long solo at the end.
Pink: Steven put on a top hat and shades. Joe played a Rickenbacker with the built in lights that changed in time to the music, and made good use of a wah-wah pedal. Brad played an
acoustic, and Tom played his purple 4 string bass.
Draw the Line: Great slide work by Joe. Joe played the clear Ampeg, and Brad played his black LP. Tom stayed with the purple 4 string. Joe finished the middle section down on the floor on his back, and waited there until Tom started the bass back up again. Very hot.
Stop Messin' Around: Joe's turn to sing. Joe played his Black Beauty, and Brad played a silver reverse-head Strat-type guitar. Tom played his 5 string. Solo order was Brad, Russ on keyboards, Steven on harp, then Joe. Joe ended it by playing with the guitar up behind his head.
Mother Popcorn: Played almost the entire thing. Joe played his Black Beauty, and Brad played his red Strat. Tom played the 5 string. This runs into the Eat the Rich rap, and then into:
Walk This Way: Same guitars as Popcorn. Towards the end of this, as Joe was at the front of the stage doing a solo, Steven came up from behind him and grabbed him from behind, really knocking Joe off balance. Almost thought Joe was going to go head forward off the stage. But Joe never missed a beat!
I Don't Want to Miss a Thing: Huge response from the crowd, and there were lots of lighters in the audience. Joe played his Black Beauty, Brad played an acoustic, and Tom played his 5 string.
Cryin': Joe played his Gibson Country Gentleman, Brad played a white Danelectro 12 string, and Tom played his 5 string.
Dude: Joe played a Firebird, Brad played his gold LP, and Tom played the 5 string. At the start they did a few notes of Get the Lead Out.
Rats in the Cellar: Joe played his black beauty, and Brad played his gold LP. Tom played his woodtone 4 string. This was an incredibly hot version, about 10 min long! Brad just wailed and did most of the solos. This is probably the best live version I have ever heard.
What It Takes: Joe played a blue Telecaster and Brad played an acoustic. Started the usual way with Steven singing the first verse a cappella.
Sweet Emotion: Tom played his woodtone 4 string. The whole opening bass solo was a collaborative effort between Tom and Steven. Tom was going to start the solo part, and Steven came over and just wanted to beat on his bass strings. So Tom took off with Steven hitting the strings. Interesting opening. Brad played his wood Telecaster, and Joe started out playing his blue Strat, but switched to his black beauty for the solo section (with the blue Strat hanging down behind his back). Then they did almost all of Heartbreaker (first two verses) and Joe did the entire Heartbreaker solo. At the end Tom passed out about 3 fingers (kept one as he walked offstage) and Joey did not throw out any drumsticks.
Rats was by far the most memorable event of the evening, over 10 min long, and totally rocked. Set was long, at just over 120 min.
