2. F.Y.P
the first time i heard fyp was sometime 2 years ago
off of a seven inch or a comp, i don't remember, but i remember thinking
to myself "oh shit, please don't let me get into this hardcore crap."
aw well, i guess i'm cursed or something. i love this band and there's
nothing i can do about it. they are very fast and loud, dorky and
brash. in-your-face punk rock. they also carry my favorite
record label, recess records. when you first listen to this band,
especially the songs off of "dance my dunce" you'll probably get freaked
out cos it's almost like hardcore metal or something. but how wrong
you are. this stuff is completely different, and besides it's way
too dorky. and poppy sometimes too. i like their lyrics mucho
tambien. it's funny to hear them say fuck you in a sing-a-longy kiddy
ditty. so far, i've never heard a band like them either.

this is where i'm not
sure about the order. lemme just say these next bands are probably
my favorite bands, but i just love them all the same okay? well,
some better than others, i guess. aw fuck, i'll figure something
along the way. okay these guys are great. wimpy fast pop-punk
with a twist of sillyness. they have the shortest songs in the world.
i mean, two seven inches out with 10 songs on each? that's fucking
crazy! the average song on fucking alternative radio is something
like 3-5 minutes long, and these guys provide way more songs in that time
period. they've done more with the three-chord structure than any
band. i mean, these guys write like 20 songs per album. shit!

4. THE RAMONES
okay just how the hell
am i supposed to rank this band? this is supposed to be the greatest
band in the world...blah blah blah. and, you know, i don't wanna
completely disagree with that, because i mean, these guys were influential
as shit and plus their songs are great. but i don't want to place
them at number 1 just for influence or such. not to say i don't appreciate
this band or whatever, cos i love the ramones - what the fuck.
i'm placing them at number 4 cos i'm fucking placing them at number 4 alright?
they're good. they're great. every poppy-punk band nowadays
is basically ripping off the ramones, cos they practically invented the
style. their songs are over 20 years old, but i still love them now.

okay you guys don't know
this band, cos they're from korea and they've never put out a demo or a
cd or whatever. but don't let that mean anything cos THESE BADASSES
ARE FUCKIGN AWESOME!!! i tell you, they fucking kick the smurfs'
asses, seriously. these guys rip it up at drug (the happiest place
on earth), the famous punk rock club in seoul, korea. these guys
know how to rock. they're also dorky and although not too fast, they
have energy. they jump and dance and make funny faces while they
play and entertain the crowd. plus they're not considered to be the
"best" band at drug, so they haven't been spoiled by sucksess yet (not
to say that the "best" band has), but in fact, i get the impression that
they like to be at the bottom. they remind me of a young fyp with
lots more poppy songs. you also get the best billy joe impression
by the lead singer. very worth the price of the plane ticket to korea
i assure you.
hold on! i have an update. okay i just found out these guys
don't play at drug anymore, cos the owner there is a cuntass and he stinks
up shit. what a fucking dick! he never likes the great bands
(hence he did not like the smurfs). well, these guys still do play
at clubs and everything, i'll just try to find out where. and if
i can get my hands on a cd or whatever with them on, i'll put it up fer
sure.
6. SICKO
well
okay i don't listen to this band too much anymore, but that doesn't mean
they don't rock. there was a time i used to play them all the time.
but i've heard their first 3 albums so many times i'm almost sick of them,
and their new album just doesn't do anything for me. what can i say?
more poppy stuff. almost indie, but don't worry, they keep it true
to punk rock. their latest cd was a little indie for me, though.
on the bright side though that means they're pretty unique and different
from most of the other poop you hear. anyway they're very likable,
so chances are if you buy any of their albums you won't flush it down the
toilet.

7. SUPERCHARGER/RIP OFFS/INFECTIONS (?)
okay i'm just adding all these bands into one, because they pretty much sound alike and share a lot of the same band members too. i just got into the rip offs recently via a bad tape recording because i don't have a record player, and the album is only on vinyl i think. supercharger i got into very recently, like 3 weeks ago. this is what i was looking for when i started getting into garagy shit. i was getting sick of buying garage/rock/psych whatever shit and having to listen to it a few times to get used to it and liking it, cos that's how it is with me. it takes a few listens for me to appreciate it and get to like it. but that's fucking annoying sometimes you know? supercharger was so damn catchy i didn't need to get used to it or any of that shit. i mean, "goes way out" is fuckign filled to the brim with 3 chord songs. in fact, there's not a single non-poppy song in the whole album! rad! why can't more bands sound like this? i want rock n roll and punk rock together, but i want it catchy too. is that so hard to ask??? i don't know what the infections sound like, but i'm guessing it's more of the same. maybe some garage shit that i'll like too after a couple listens, but as long as they are catchy songs in there i'll be happy.

8. NE'ER DO WELLS/BRENT'S TV/HI-FIVES/ETC.
i used to be really into this stuff. like 2 years ago when i first did this top ten thing, i thought it was the fuckign cream of the crop. now it's doesn't tickle my fancy as much, but it's still great. i mean, i fucking grew up to this and learned how to play guitar to this stuff. it's lots of fun to play along to. i think the whole deal started with brent's tv in humboldt, california and later they became the ne'er do wells. somewhere along the line they adopted the name hi-fives, and currently that is what they are known as. what do these guys sound like? well, fuckign download the real audios and find out! they're jingle-jangly. no guitar distortion here. kinda like a beatles-ish sound but faster and more "modern" i guess. that's a pretty stupid description. like all the other bands i really like, they're poppy as shit, so, yeah, wimpy-alert right? just shut up and listen.

9. OPERATION
IVY
what's
the greatest ska/punk band to ever grace my cd player? of course
it's op ivy, and that's cos i barely listen to ska in the first place.
no that's not the reason you silly jackal, it's cos they've got more energy
(ooh! a pun!), style, and better songs than anyone else. i only have
one cd by them, but that's enough for me to know they're the greatest.
the muhammed ali of ska/punk. none of that horn bullshit here neither
cos you and i know that stuff is weak. i'm talking fast ska guitar
shit and vocals that hit you. great lyrics and catchy songs.
often imitated but never repeated, this is what you need.
10. SCREECHING WEASEL
aw
shit i can't believe i totally forgot about screeching weasel. damn,
this belongs in like number 5 1/2 or something. sorry. if you
haven't heard of this band then you've been living in a rock for the last
5 years. basically the band that started the whole snotty pop-punk
lookout thing. even the queers borrowed from their sound i think.
anyway i like their earlier stuff better, but they continue to release
albums that don't suck completely. at least that's what i've heard.

THE ASSORTED
JELLYBEANS - i just saw
these guys live and although they didn't blow me away or anything, it was
still lots of fun. that's what these guys embody. very much
in the vein of operation ivy, this band is ska/punk true to "punk."
more fast ska guitar here with cool vocals and NO HORNS. oh yeah,
this shit is very dancable. i know the "so-cal" crowd will appreciate
this more than anyone else, but i tell you this is different from all that
other ska crap. dammit, even the drummer sings!
THE SUICIDE
MACHINES - another awesome
ska/punk band i like. i don't like much ska, but i do like the suicide
machines. basically a lot of what i just said about the assorted
jellybeans can be attributed to these guys. maybe a few horns here
and there, but don't let that stop you. incredible speed in some
of their songs, almost metalish, but in a good way. this is a major
label band, which can bother some people, but to me that only means that
the sound quality is fucking perfect. check them out.
THE MAKERS -
superduper garage kings.
these guys have been around for quite a long time, but of course, im a
moron so i haven't noticed them until only a year ago. the makers
sound exactly like what you'd expect, only better. i've heard quite
a few various makers songs, and these guys have something a lot of garage
bands don't. fuck, man, how many other ways can i say "good"?

DEAD MILKMEN - BIG LIZARD IN MY
BACKYARD
the first and best album by the dead milkmen is filled with a unique style
that separates this band from any other. real fast and funny punk,
but without distortion. no, it's not like the hi-fives either.
this band is totally different. not as poppy, or happy, or both.
these guys are a little bit darker than your average group, but their just
as fun. this cd is awesome from start to finish, and you can tell
there's something special about it because of all the weird elements tossed
in.

OF CHAKA - HUTCH BROWN
SAYNGWICH
damn, i almost forgot about this album. one of the fucking most fastest
bands i know. the first, maybe, 5 or so songs are super-high speed,
then there's kind of a regular-speed one, and then more fast songs.
the band is snotty, loud yet catchy. still relatively unpopular for
some weird-odd reason. maybe cos they haven't signed onto lookout
yet?
oh yeah, sorry i don't have any sound files for this. i don't have
the album on cd, and i'm too lazy to hook my computer up to the stereo
(believe me, if you knew how fucking inconvenient that is, you wouldn't
either), but if you wanna listen to them you should go to billy's page

the no-talents and loli & the chones are both awesome!!! i swear you
guys are gonna shit in your pants when you hear this. there's nothing
better than girl vocals that make you wanna hide. the no-talents
are from france, and it tells from their vocals. loli & the chones
are good whole-hearted americans and they rock just as hard as their french
counterparts. both of them are straight-up punk rock, and yes, they

one of the garage
cds i got into last year. this is actually a fairly recent album,
i don't think these guys have released anything else in terms of cds.
this has got to be the most raunchiest cd i own. nothing feels better
than playing "shanty" so loud it hurts your ears, especially when you're
driving by and scaring little kids. the sound quality is so crusty
i hope the real audio just doesn't sound like noise. anyway the whole

yes, this is good
shit! i can't believe at first i wasn't blown by this, but after
rediscovering it a few months back i concluded this had to be one of my
favorite albums. there are maybe 7 or 8 awesome songs in this album.
the rest are just good, with the exception of one or two. i like
this because it's ska without being too gay or happy. and plus the
punk parts are super-fast; it's obvious the drummer for this band knows
his shit. their new album "battle hymns" is pretty good too, but
this is the suicide machines at their best.

DO WELLS/JUDY & THE LOADIES - GIFT
OF KNOWLEDGE
probably
one of the cds i've listened to the most in my life, gift of knowledge
is basically what i learned to play guitar to. every song is kinda
catchy and playable, and although now i hardly ever listen to it, every
time i do, i get all weird and stuff cos it reminds me of high school.
that's a good thing, by the way. the ne'er do wells are great as
hi-fives clones (actually it's the other way around), and their songs are
very danceable. kinda like early beatles but a lot more hip, and
plus they don't have as many shitty songs. pretty raw too, none of
that polished bullshit here. this band was way cooler way back then
before they became the hi-fives (although the hi-fives aren't too bad themselves).
the ne'er do wells are cool but judy & the loadies are pretty weird.

SICKO - CHEF BOY RU DUMB & SICKO -
YOU CAN FEEL THE LOVE IN THIS ROOM
well whatta ya
know, another tie. sorry, but it was so hard to put one in front
of the other, and besides they're by the same fuckign band! sicko
are great, and these are their two best albums, hands down. the other
two are both okay, but not great, although i have to say that the sound
quality on "you're not the boss of me" is incredible. "chef boy ru
dumb" is rad because virtually all of its songs are listenable. they're
all good songs. maybe a little generic to the average ear, but i
say that sicko are very different from most other pop-punk bands.
they have sort of an indie feel and that makes their songs a little bit
more complicated maybe? well, just different. this was kent's
strongest influence in his smurfs songs, i'd have to say. "you can
feel the love..." is also great. it may not be the greatest album
as a whole, but some of the songs there are incredible! the very
good and the decent songs average out to an album worth having, if i ever
get more money. unfortunately i don't have that on cd, so i couldn't

there's a distinct style that i definitely liked about them. this
was one of the first snotty pop-punk bands, so naturally i thought this

to this stuff for so long now, and i practically know the songs (especially
off of rocket to russia) like my right hand, but dammit, it's just so good.
rocket to russia itself is so incredibly awesome, it's beyond me how these
guys pulled it off before i was even born. road to ruin ain't so
bad itself either. it definitely is a plus to the cd - she's the
one is one of my favorite songs by the ramones. of course, this is
where the ramones started going downhill, with songs like needles and pins
they show some signs of suckiness. but that's why the cd format is
so cool - i don't even listen to some of the songs, cos the bad tracks

and finally, number
one. what can i say about dance my dunce...shit, this will fucking
blow you the fuck away! punk rock the way it was supposed to be,
not this sappyass pop shit (yeah i know i dig that stuff too). loud,
crazy, and out-of-control. not intimidating either like those hardcore
jock bands cos these guys know how to be dorks. how else can you
justify off-key and off-beat vocals, kiddie lyrics, and xylophones?
i'm serious, when i listen to this, i can't sit still. when i try
to do something i end up tapping my foot or mouthing (yelling) out the
vocals. lemme just say this is not the shit you wanna listen to when
you gotta test coming up. it demands your attention. their

i just finally
bought this cd recently, so that's why i put it on here. whoops.
but it's really good. out of the 20 songs here maybe 13 are good.
not fucking bad at all if you ask me. and i still get a kick out
of glen danzig's jim morrison impression. one bad note: the sound
quality is shit! - soft and muddy as hell.

THE ASSORTED JELLYBEANS - S/T
shit yes. i like this very very much. fast ska with punk stuff and NO horns. lots of fun too i should add. they're kind of like a cross between operation ivy and, i hate to say it, the beastie boys. but let me say that these guys can fucking beat the beastie idiots no problem okay? this album has lots of energy in it and after one listen you'll see what i mean.
