Would you believe I MISSED "The Ed Sullivan Show"??? I was only 11 years old and not at all into music. I didn't see it till many years later and then on video. Even more unbelievable, I thought the Beatles were UGLY at first!!! Remember, guys just didn't wear long hair in 1964!
I remember vividly when Beatlemania first hit me. We were on vacation in August, 1964.To fill the empty time while my dad drove, I sat in the backseat reading a magazine. The Beatles happened to be in it (like they were in EVERYTHING back then!) I finally had to admit to myself that they WERE kinda cute! And the rest, as they say, is history. A great love affair began then, one that continues to this day.The very first Beatle record I ever got was a single of "Love Me Do/P.S. I Love You" on the VeeJay label. I just about wore that poor record out, playing it so much! It got melted years later when I left my records too close to a floor furnace!
Believe it or not, my dad bought me my first beatle album, "Meet The Beatles". The Beatles were appearing in concert in Dallas on September 18, 1964 and I talked my dad into buying me a ticket. As it turned out, they were all sold out, so to cushion the blow, because he knew I'd be heartbroken, he bought that album for me. I laid at home in my bed on the night of their concert, crying my eyes out and listening to "Meet The Beatles"! It seemed like the biggest disaster in the world at the time!
