Suede talk !
Yahoo ! Kicking up a right raaw-kin' fuss here late this month are stylemeisters Suede, the very same Brit glam-rockers who sashayed to the top of the UK charts recently with their latest CD , Head Music. Listen up, as frontman Brett Anderson talks to Stephanie Chok about leading an unglamorous life, getting his shirt ripped off & worrying too much about his hair !
Lime : Hiya, Brett ! Planning any big-time surprises for your Singapore gig here this month?
B.A. : (Cheerily) No, not really ! Nothing more surprising than a great gig, I hope !
Lime : Can we expect a raaaaaw-king good show ?
B.A. : ( Laughs) It kinda depends on the crowd ! One of the things I really liked about
playing Singapore (they played here almost 3 years ago) was that it was a really
unrestrained crowd. I think people don't appreciate just how much a gig is made by the audience. I loved the last gig we played in Singapore simply 'cos the audience was so postive- it just gave us a really good vibe. I'm really excited
about playing there again !
Lime : What's the most bizarre audience you've played to ?
B.A. : I still can't get over Japan! It still seems strange to me, coming from Europe. All
they have for security is just, like , a rope to hold everyone back, & everyone's
just so polite !
Lime : What's the best thing anyone has said about Suede's music ?
B.A. : There's a covers band in Canada that does only covers of Sex Pistols songs, & the
lead singer of this band, well, he said Suede was kinda like the Sex Pistols for
the 90s & that really chuffed me !
Lime : After spending 8 years together, what have you got to say about your
band-mates?
B.A. : (Baffled) I don't know, really, it's a very strange relationship being in a band !
We spend so much time together we're almost like a married couple ! The funny
thing is, we actually all live about 2 to 3 minutes walk from each other & every
time we stop touring, I always say, " OK, I'm not gonna go & hang out with
them when I get home. I'll go & see my proper friends". But you just end up in
the same places with the same people all the time !
Lime : How high up the rock-star metre are Suede ?
B.A : (Immediately) On-stage 5; off-stage 2 !
Lime : So, rock star, when did you last get your shirt ripped off by a fan ?
B.A. : (Chuckling) Oh god ! That was 8 years ago, it doesn't happen anymore- the
audiences are all a lot further away now ! Ha Ha ha !You know, that kind of
thing happened when we were playing in pubs & really small venues where
you are virtually in the crowd !
Lime : Which stereotype of Brit rockers do you think Suede are guilty of living up to ?
B.A. : Ooooh…probabaly some of them- like not worrying about money & worrying
about their hair too much ! Ha ha ! We're not too bad really, we don't lead
particularly glamorous lives. There are lots of bands who become famous &
think they're the Rolling Stones but that's never happened with us. Most of the
people I spend my time with have been with me from a long time ago & I
don’t think they'll be impressed if I suddenly started drinking champagne for
breakfast or something.
Lime : Your current single is She's In Fashion. Which lady do you fancy is currently
in fashion?
B.A. : Oh, I don't know…most of the people I like just tend to be people I see on
the street. Errr… I guess what's her name, Brandy & Monica, yeah .
Lime : What do you reckon is the most fashionable item you own ?
B.A. : (Pleased as punch) Talent. There's nothing more fashionable than being
talented.
End of interview.
