6/2/01 -- Review of the new album UNION by PUYA:
http://www.indepthzine.com/album/puya1.html

This seems to be the summer of the Sophomore Effort.  Looking at the release schedule we have a lot of new comers as well as bands that have established themselves as a force and are looking to continue their stand with their 2nd full length release.  After playing the March Metal Meltdown in '99, opening for the likes of Fear Factory, Type O Negative, System Of A Down, and Incubus, as well as an opening slot with KISS in Puerto Rico and of course, a second stage slot on the '99 edition of Ozzfest, PUYA finally headed to the studio with producer GGGarth Richardson (Kittie, Rage Against The Machine and Mudvayne), and recorded their follow up album "UNION".  Now "Fundemental" was filled with plenty of Latin influence mixed brilliantly with the brutality of a hardcore style.  Horns and other percussive instruments added a twist to their music and gained them a large following of loyal fans in the process!  "UNION" is no exception!  Why fix something that isn't broken?  The percussion's are even more evident on "UNION" and the Latin influences and breakdowns are better than ever!  The only thing that might be absent are the horns.  They're seldom heard but with the boosting of drums/percussion's, "UNION" is heavier than what most people might expect.  The breakdowns going from a Latin feel to a hardcore chorus on songs like "Ride", "Bridge", "People", "Pati Pami", "Ahorake", and "No Interference" are sure to whip the fans into a frenzy this summer!  Of course songs like "Erizo", "Socialize", "Si Aja", "A Matter Of Time", that begin like a page out of a Meshuggah or Sepultura/Soulfly novel, come across as that unique style that is PUYA.  Be sure to listen for the all out jam at the end of the last track "Union"!  Ramon, Harold, Sergio and Ed have done what they wanted to....capture their live intensity on tape and bring it to the masses in the form of an album.  The album is UNION!!!  Check your stores June 12th for it!  For all the latest on Puya, be sure to check out http://www.puya.net!  Rating 4.5 of 5!
