Pilfers - s/t | |
How I ended up with the Pilfers cd is pretty
cool actually. Well, my first encounter with anything Pilfers related was at the Toasters
show at Wetlands on Dec. 28, 1997. Ruder Than You was late so Coolie formed a little
improvisation band to keep us entertained. My friends and I were thoroughly impressed with
Coolie Ranx's talent and were interested in the cd. About a month later, on Jan. 29, my
best friend Cindy and I were listening to Tunnel One (NYU's ska station) and Coolie Ranx
was a guest DJ with Edna's Goldfish as well. We were pretty hyped cuz we were also big
Edna's Goldfish fans. Anyhow, they were giving away 2 Pilfers cds and one of the questions
Coolie asked was "Who invented human cloning?" Since my friend, Diane's been
running around telling everyone that Richard Seed's nickname was "Dick Seed", I
had a pretty clear guess that it was Richard Seed and low and behold, I won the Pilfers
cd. Yay!!! I got the cd in the mail a week later. I can confidently say that it is really good. The Pilfers are definitely one of the more distinctive modern ska bands today. It's a melodic mix of reggae, some dancehall, a little punk, and of course SKA. I highly recommend this cd. Not only is it a good album, the Pilfers are also a cool bunch of guys and support them! The album is 100% DIY. They're not even selling it in stores. Only available at Pilfers shows and through mailorder. Check their web page at www.Pilfers.com for more info.

Edna's Goldfish - before you knew better
I first heard of Edna's Goldfish through the Spawn of Skarmageddon compilation
from Moon Records. My friend Cindy fell in love with their song "Gone Away"
immediately. It took me awhile longer to discover the song but it left quite an impression
on me. We then searched long and hard for their cd for more than a year. Little did we
know that they didn't release it yet. What they did during that time period? I have no
clue. If you find out, tell me...please. Anyhow, I finally got it a few days after they released it (Jan. 27, 1998) from the Moon Ska store for the affordable price of 8 buckaroos. I stuck it in my cd player and I must admit. It never came out since. The album is absolutely superb! Their guitars rock. Very upbeat. Very good horn section! Brian's voice is real pleasant sounding. I say that because he actually has a good voice. Many modern ska bands have singers that are just like ok. But Brian can really sing. I wouldn't be surprised if he was in his highschool glee club or something. Another thing I like about Edna's Goldfish is that their songs are so sweet. I just can't stand degrading songs and theirs is far from that. Most of them are about being in love with girls. Enough to make any girl swoon. Two words. Get it!

The Slackers - REDLIGHT
I've been sweating the Slackers new cd for
awhile, and when I say sweat I mean it! I think that Vic Ruggiero must have the sexiest
voice in the world. The songs are enough to leave you wanting more. But looking at the cd
from a more unisex point of view, it's still damned good. The music is very skillfully
played. Good rhythm, and lyrics are very clever. If you're a Slackers fan you would not be
disappointed. If you haven't heard any Slackers before, this would definitely initiate you
into the fan circle. The twelve tracks on this sophomore Slackers album each have a very distinct sound to them. It kicks off with a tribute the the Skatalites, Cooking for Tommy. In my opinion it's done pretty well. It's always interesting to hear different bands play Skatalites and speaking fairly, I believe that it sounds good. Although more Skatalites purist probably wouldn't like it so much. My favorites are I Still Love You, Soldier, You Must be Good, and Come Back Baby. These are the more slow and melodic tunes. If you're into the more punky, or fast ska-core, then the Slackers probably wouldn't be your top choice but give it a chance, You won't be disappointed.

Mephiskapheles - Maximum Perversion
My
bologna has a first name. It's S-A-T-A-N... Would you expect anything else besides
Skatanic tunes from this band? Although this album was very good, I have to admit that I
was a bit disappointed. I did expect it to be better. Well, I am basing this judgement on
their first album, "God Bless Satan. I just feel that the songs on that
album were alot more creative. However, overall it's still a fairly decent cd and I do enjoy listening to it. There's a bunch of instrumentals which they played skillfully. Very catch. Very satanic. It'll have you humming all day. Oh, another thing. Be ready for the cd. It's quite...um...graphic. It's worth getting and compared to other bands (rather than their first album), it would definitely be way above (or shall we say, way below if you know what I mean.....mwaaaaaaa <--- Satanic laughter).

The Bang Sountrack | |
Another cd I recently got is a soundtrack of a
film by Ash called Bang. I haven't seen this movie, but it has an all ska
soundtrack and it's on Moon Ska Records. How bad could it be? Anyhow, it's 70 minutes of
trippy dub and traditional ska. Pretty good stuff though. What I really like is the Dr.
Ring Ding and HP Setter stuff. Very Jamaican. If you like that Jamaica ska sound be sure
to check out the song Trombone Sound. Much of the music on this cd is very relaxing actually. It never fails to put me to sleep whenever I get embraced by that hateful insomnia. If you are into the more jumpy ska, once again, I wouldn't recommend this album being your first choice. You'll probably get disappointed. Ska purists, be sure to check it out. |
That's it for my periodic review of cds. I'll try to keep updating as I get new ones. However, I think I may just keep 5 at a time and take out one while adding a new one. If you have any suggestions about this or anything at all please email me. Constructive criticism is always good!
