Slivers and Paper Cuts

Update: 5/31/98 - As a request to review the page again, I went to it immediatly. I first got there and I was said to myself, "Wow." This page has changed very tremendously since I first reviewed it, and it seems to offer a little bit more. The front page is complex but simple. Picture this a Nirvana: Never Fade Away format, but the square does not take up the whole page.

The new addition to the site is Memories of Kurt; this section contains a guestbook you can sign, and your thoughts on Kurt. As in the older review, this page still has movies, and I think a little bit more than it used to. This site still gives you the chance to win their award. Nirvana ICQ is where fans can meet using a program called ICQ, (www.mirabilis.com). The Cobain Child section, I think, is probably copied somewhere that I don't remember, but I think it is nonetheless.

The chat room has not changed much, it is, however, a little neater and a little cleaner. You will still have to wait for it to download on your screen. Games has become a part of many Nirvana pages these days, and this page is not going to be left out. It offers (as of now) four games for your enjoyment. The links section looks just about the same when I first saw it, but I am sure there are some new additions to it. The links section is pretty good, offering a variety here and there.

Also a new addition that you will find to this site is the Message Board. This is sort of like a guest book, moreover, it's a message board. It's pretty organized and it is easy to find the subject. The Picture place is not too special, at least, not special to anything that this site has to offer. It does, however, offer 37 pictures (as of now), you will find some interesting pictures.

The suicide note is a little different, it has a scanned version, and by it's side is the text version. Unlike other sites that have the scanned and text versions in two different places. I have recieved notice that, although the lyrics is in another directory, it is still part of Sliver and Paper Cuts. And the the thing is, it isn't necessary. It is definitly copied out of Smiley's lyrics. So save up the space and use it for something a little more original.

I'm not sure where the Discography is copied, but it is probably from somewhere. Again, I don't find this exactly necessary. I think Sliver and Paper Cuts has a little bit more to offer than copied material. If you need to find the guitar tabs, then you will find it here. I don't think they spent all that time typing all of that up, but at least it has something. The tribute section just contains two pictures of Kurt, one older and one younger, with the usual 'Kurt Cobain 1967-1994,' not to forget the MIDI of "All Apologies." Btw, you'll find these two things in Acohol and Beans.

Controversial pictures is nothing different...the same two pictures as before, but I think that's OK. Just one of the newspaper articles and one with him lying on the floor in the greenhouse. The sketches by Kurt, again, not a lot of difference, but to let you know, they are basically paintings done by him (i.e., cover on Incesticide). The concert chronology is pretty informative, but you can also find it at some other pages as well. It starts back in '87 and goes to '94.

The Assorted information is rather my favorite part of the page, or, the part I think is best. It contains a lot of facts, information, or FAQs even. :) I clicked on the Sounds section, it's pretty good but it was pretty hard getting there. (hint: type in the URL for the people who are not able to retrieve it). The bootlegs section leads to another page but it is rather good, containing some rather interesting shows. The downloads are things that you can download that you may need for some of the Nirvana material. Then there is a Nirvana dictionary which is about the songs.

Conclusion

As you can see, this page hasn't changed too much. Not in the contents, anyway. I would suggest this page use more original content, the pictures section is good along with the Information, but you don't need everything to make a good page. All in all, I think it's a site worth visiting, but you would probably have seen some of this before.

Notice how rather simple this page format is. It has a menu near the bottom, with a picture on top of that. This page does have a lot, a little too much for me to list them all (time consuming). So let's go to the review:

Interested in winning an award for your site? Apply here. Take note, this place does get a lot of email, and it may take a while if you win. Get your popcorn out, and make sure you have some room on your hard drive, because there is a lot of movies on here. From media player movies to Real Player, this will not leave you disappointed.

The chatroom is very neat, in graphics, and organization. It does take a little while to load, but is it all worth it? Yes. Just fill out the form and 'connect!' You may even set up your own chat room for your page. The games section does lead to other page's games, or most of them. It shouldn't leave you disappointed. In addition, there is a new place to post up your message, or the message board. It has 37 pictures (as of now) and the collection isn't too bad at all.

I think we all know Kurt's Suicide Note, by now. Funny thing is the lyrics lead to another page. However, I believe it was copied right out of Smiley's page. Nevertheless, Smiley's lyrics are pretty much complete. Want to check out what songs were on which CDs and when they were released? Find it all here in the discography.

The controversial pictures section offers two pictures. I won't post it up on here, I don't want any angry email. :) So go there and find out yourself. Moving on to Kurt's Sketches, I also think we should know that by now. The guitar tabs run through some of Bleach, Nevermind, and In Utero. Also check out the concert chronology.

The interview section is good. With a lot of interviews and articles to check out. The page is very informative, covering twenty-five (25) informational topics. Great idea? Yes there is a 'great idea' on this page. Are you tired of Geffen taking down all the audio files from your favorite pages? No fear, you can join the mailing list. In addition, you can get sound files from there. Great huh? :) Want to trade bootlegs, ask Proteus.

If you want to sign, or view the guestbook, you can do that too.

Final Conclusion

A page not to miss. With many things to offer, as you can tell right away from this review. I found this site very creative, informative, neat, whatever. It's a great site and I would strongly urge you to go to it today.
