Introduction
Were webpages born
perfect? No. Are some just destined to become great
pages? Maybe. But regardless of what page your building and
who you are, you will have to put effort into your page to keep
your visitors coming back. Just like a movie in theatres, successful
movies, like Titanic or Star Wars Episode I, makes money
because people go back to see them.
Connectivity Test
On the main page of the site,
there are a total of seventeen images, consisting of 81,454 bytes.
@ 14.4 = 50.88 sec. / @ 28.8 = 25.44 sec. / @ 56K = 13.09 sec.
Netscape Navigator
downloaded the page completely in about 34 seconds, while Internet
Explorer downloaded the page completely in about 40
seconds.
Interface
We first meet a lovely "welcome" page that has a picture of Kurt
with his own quotes around him. This is pretty nice, but if you
really want to get neat, you can have the quotes in java form; then you
have one quote appear after another.
The main reason why the page
didn't download so well in Internet Explorer (it was estimated, the first
time was over one minute) was because of the two frames that persist on
the top and the bottom of the page. Netscape for some reason
downloaded the page quite well and it looks similar to Internet Explorer's
version of the page. The main page consists of news and updates,
recommended browser and resolution, and so forth.
My Suggestions:
The layout is fine, and if you want to keep it that way, that's okay.
However I'm sure a few suggestions would not hurt. Let's keep a few
things in mind, frames are not always the best route to go.
If you can't have a page without frames, make sure you minimize the text
and try to push them into one frame; other options include you could use a
navigation bar, or whatever sparks your interest.
It's a start for a page.
That is what counts.
The
introduction page says that the page looks and works best with 800x600
resolution and Internet Explorer as the browser. However Netscape
downloads quicker...but they [Netscape and IE] still look
similar.
The Site's Content
It is a theory that the less
variety of content a site has, the more original it actually is. Although that theory has not been proven yet, would this site help support
that theory?
-
Kurt: A brief
summary of Nirvana's front man and lead song writer. It's not
too thorough, but it does give a nice paragraph or so about his life
and how Courtney/Francis influenced him. It would be nice to
have some information on Dave and Krist too.
-
Study: Just because
school is out for most of you guys doesn't mean you shouldn't
study. This is a very interesting title for a basic
section. In this part you will find album reviews from different
sources, including articles on Kurt [and his death], the band, and two
or three interviews as well.

Lyrics: Instead of
having one picture of the album cover, it also has the inside of the
album, although I don't feel that this absolutely necessary. It
does set up the lyrics nicely, and the navigation is okay.
-
Biography: From two
sources, Rolling Stone and Rough Guides. The latter is probably
nicer.

-
Miscellaneous: A lot
of the sections are under construction or not available, and I wish it
could mark those areas so that people can recognize it. It has a
lot of stuff like a timeline, FAQ, equipment guides, web community,
etc. A pretty good area to get your "basic"
information.
-
News: Some current
Nirvana news, some that I haven't read about.

Videos: There are
pretty close to 50 video clips from music videos and live shows.
-
Links: A few links.

Feedback/About: The
feedback section is basically a poll, while the about section gives information
about the webmaster.
Conclusion
I have no idea why I'm a
little bit easier on pages that are getting started. Maybe I should
be a little harsher? But let's face it, most Nirvana pages are
started by fans in their spare time with little HTML experience. I
think this page looks better than pages I have seen that have been up for
years. It can improve by adding more sections, compressing sections
into something more creative (like tabs/lyrics/album info. into
one). There's plenty of things you can do, all you need is a bright
idea and dedication.
