Clickable ImageChimChim's Nirvana page

Reviewed on September 1, 1998 - 3:58 PM

Chim Chim was a toy monkey Kurt treasured. In any case, I was asked to review this page. The page is simple and at some sense, it tries. A white background with a picture of Kurt, which turns out to be an important and effective navigation tool -- an image map. It maps the frame and the non-frames version, which we'll get to later. Under that are a few banners, and a counter. The organization of banners could be a little better. I know, I know, I am being picky. Nevertheless, even the way you organize your banners tell the visitor a little something about your site and you.

Graphics

Frames vs. No frames. This has been an never-ending debate and investigation for this page. Which is better? Why this, why that? Well, you can't lose with either one. That depends immensely on what kind of person you are. I pretty much described the main page in the above paragraph. Now, I'll give you a little information on which you should choose for this site.

Regardless of the page you choose, you will get a JavaScript to type in your name. I don't mind these very much, however if your trying to have visitors to come to your site continuously, then try something else. If, however, your just trying to add some entertainment to the site, then it doesn't bother me that much, but it may to other people.

Information

The first informative section is the discography. Big deal right? Well, this page took notice of that and added some animations to the discography, or each section (or albums I should say). Providing a much more visual sense to it. But I would highly favor a QuickTime file instead. Following that is a so-so links section. Providing you text and banner links, and some of them are not Nirvana related, which is okay to some extent.

As for the lyrics you'll find all of the studios and the Wishkah album here. However if you highly anticipate navigation with lyrics, then this section isn't for you for the most part. It would be a lot better to have them separated by albums or anchors. The 'Lost Interview' is something you should be familiar with, however it doesn't have the rest of the parts.

Multimedia

This site seems to be bigger on multimedia than anything else, so we'll see if this can override the information sections that it lacked. The pictures section is a little interesting, and I'm not talking about the pictures. It is the background. It has a very big picture of Kurt, and it continues to be the same on the way down. The background is nice, but you have to scroll down about half the page to see some pictures. Of course, you'll get a few, but not a lot. The cover section seems to offer a little more than the other picture section.

Then there's movies. You have a so-so list. These are, like most movies or any files on any site, not theirs. Nothing wrong with it as long as it gives credit. Here you'll find about 13 files. If your in the frames version, but you want to look at the MP3, your out of luck. The non-frames version for the MP3 link works though, however if you are in the frames, it is http://angelfire.com/pa/ChimChim/mp3page.html. Thing thing at the top that basically says, "MTV Sucks!" is ironic is a since. Take a look at the MP3 files for example, these contain MTV Unplugged songs, and videos that MTV aired.

There's some improvement in the MIDI section, although I'm not a big fan of, but you may be. It has all of the albums, most of the songs and a great list of rare and b-sides. Did that sound right?

Miscellaneous

Need some help with HTML, or you don't know where to put this graphic? Get some help! Seriously, this site will give you some assistance. You'll find further information at that particular section. You can also view and sign the guest book, which looks really neat in my opinion. The graphics are little different than the average guest book. There is a message board that will be found in the frames but not in the non-frames.

Conclusion

There are some things this site will have to definitely work on. This is not a bad site, not at all. I see that it has put a lot of effort into it, and I take note of that. The basic organization of the site will need a tune up. There must be an easier navigation standard to the site. For example, an image map, they offer a better option than frames. People don't like to go to another site with the URL of the previous site, do they? This page needs some more content. However if it wants to move towards multimedia, that's okay. But for the most part sound files are a one time thing. People visit the page, download the songs they want, and leave. I wish this site the very best, it has a lot of potential and if it uses it, I think we can see a great Nirvana site.
