Reviewed updated on November 25th, 1998 @ 1:15 AM EST One of the top choices for any Nirvana fan that has access to the internet, there are many reasons as to why this page is probably one of the most recognized, also. There are many things this site has. Significantly, the information it offers. What it also offers is a well-rounded page. It has plenty of, as I mentioned, information; as well as multimedia too. The originality of this page is tremendous. Graphics | Information | Multimedia Has much been changed since the last review? Nope. Yet it has made itself look more professional and cleaned up a little bit. There is a nice little tap with the contents on one side and the site news and updates on another. Both are different backgrounds. The layout is very neat and clear, and everything is organized is an efficient manner. The first click I moved my cursor to was the NFC WWWBoard. What did I get? A little explanation on why it was not available. Hopefully we'll see that in the near future. However, you can read posts previous to 11/14/98. Something that does work is the Bootleg Forum. The first section in the Bootleg Forum is more like a personal section I should say. It follows: My Full List of Nirvana Bootlegs; My Full List of Concerts; Detailed list of videos in PAL; My Most Wanted List; and How To Trade With Me. All I have to say is that it will take about five minutes to scroll down completely on either list. It would be hard not to find something you are looking for in this list. Next, there are 10 parts in the Nirvana Performance Guide [which is linked from NFC.] Afterwhich there is a Trader's Guide to Nirvana. List alphabetically, it goes from: A-H; I-M; N-R; and S-Z. Then there is the Import Dealer's FAQ v. 4.2. Then you have the "Complete" list of Nirvana bootlegs (there is always a growing number of them.) Following is the Nirvana Recording Sessions and Song List; and the Concert Chronology 0.4. If you have any questions about the NFC or some Nirvana-related question, more than likely you'll find it in the Fan Club FAQ. It does not stop their, either. There is the Nirvana Information and Facts section. What this has is a lot of information. It includes most of the FAQs you can think of, as well as recording guides and vinyl information, there is also information about Nirvana's upcoming boxset, and then there are some things concerning Kurt's suicide and the whereabouts of the members now. Is that everything? No, I only ran through it very quickly. There is much more to it than what I said. My intention is to give you an idea of what is there. Also there is another long list of the all the [known] songs. It probably has one of the longest links listed in any Nirvana page on the Net. It also includes some other non-Nirvana links, too. In total, there are 348 links. You can submit your own link. It also includes webrings. Then there are guitar tabs. Divided up into albums, mostly containing two parts for each album listed. The tabs are very simplified. The same follows for the lyrics, except that there are probably a lot more rare songs listed than most Nirvana pages have. There is also an interview with Chad Channing's parents that was done by Rasmus Holmes (the webmaster of the NFC.) Also included are shows that were "Mislabeled or Misguided." Here are the pictures and the number each section provides:
Next is the sound gallery. You can find files from various bands, mostly from Nirvana. Nirvana formats include MP3, wav., Real Audio and MIDI. It includes some other bands such as the Foo Fighters, Sweet75 and Hole. It also gives the length of each song, as well as the size. As for the movies, if you visited the Geffen site, you will not have missed anything. It's totally understandable I suppose -- lack of server space, which is a common problem anyway. Nevertheless, a quick download and a 30-second clip isn't all that bad. Just because you may be out of school does not mean you can get away from quizzes. The people who have been a part of Nirvana have used the Internet well. In the Chat Logs section, you will see transcripts from chatlogs of Chris and Dave, Dale Crover, and even Jim Geffen. You will also see some older guestbooks that people have left their remarks about the site. You also have links to the Nirvana, Foo Fighters, and Courtney Love newsgroups. Also you can sign and view the current guest book. You can also view poems and other such related material in another section. The page also provides a link to a page that has some kind of mIRC script. As for the downloads section, you have only a few "regular" varieties: KC and CL calculators, Nirvana and Incesticide fonts, and the KC skin for WinAmp. Hopefully there will be more files in the future. There is also a section about the Kurt Murder theory. It mainly focuses (and consists of) Tom Grant's investigation as well as a few other articles. The Nirvana webring takes you to: "Breed: The Nirvana webring." Yes, there is more. First, there is are some reviews of Nirvana websites. Note that there are no reviews after August, 1998. You can also take a look at what people think. There is a place regarding that, and that is where it posts the final tally for votes. Votings included "Favorite Songs" and opinions about the site. Then there are some "Previous Nirvana News." News from about a year ago. In some albums, the band gives a special "thanks" to people for helping them out and what not, and the site has done the same thing. You can take a look at the awards the site has won. A few more things: you can view the winners of the quiz and site recognitions. Another personalized section: Metallica stuff. There's only two ways you can feel about this site, realistically: you either love it or you hate it. It would be hard to be neutral, but I feel like this is a great site in the Nirvana community. If there were not so many pages, this would probably be one of those that would still be standing because it offers a lot of things. The pictures are good, pretty average, and so is the multimedia. The most provoking aspect of the page is the information it offers. If it continues to strive in information as well as those spots it could work on, it would become much stronger. It is not too necessary, it is just fine the way it is. I must give it credit for a lot of hard work it has put into it over the years. Let's not fall into the trap like Smiley's Page did. |
