Dimension 7 - the NIRVANA page

Reviewed on November 10, 1998 @ 4:05 PM EST

Sometimes people will take a look at a page name and visit it. Sometimes the name is rather straightforward, for instance so-so photo gallery. Well, if the user is looking for pictures, 9 times out of 10 they will visit that particular site. Whereas the webmaster of a page is quite creative, and they use that ability to come up with a title.

Graphics

The layout of this page is not necessarily a bad one. Considering the potential it had making a good one, as seen in the layout, it does seem kind of bad. On the top is a link to a banner exchange, which the page asks you to visit. Another thing you can tell is that this webmaster is very interested in the Internet-based program called ICQ (think "I seek you.") It has an ICQ Control Panel on the left-hand corner of the page. This displays some information and so fourth. Then near the center are the stuff that you will find on the site. Near the bottom are more banners.

Information

As with most pages, the first section would be the lyrics. In this page, you click on one of the albums, then it will display the lyrics for that song. It has the usual stuff, including B-sides and rare songs and .. Hormoaning (the Australian-version of Incesticide.) I give this page a lot of credit for putting up Hormoaning lyrics. The tabs are rather similar to the lyrics, but this time it does not have tabs for Hormoaning. In addition, it has several things you can read to help you out: Power Chord Chart; Tablature Definition; and Feedback and Noise Making. The albums seem to be arranged like a roll, rather than them being separate like the lyrics and liner notes. In the liner notes section, it contains, ironically enough, the liner notes that are found in those albums: Nevermind, Hormoaning, Incesticide, and Wishkah. I do not think I have to introduce the discography at all, but it's there if you need it. Some other things that I'll run through quickly, these sections you are probably familiar with:

  • Concert Chronology
  • Video Guide
  • Recording Sessions
  • Background Information
  • Nirvana Dictionary - This section has most of the songs in alphabetical order, and it gives some information on a song about where it was played.

There's also Articles and Interviews. 16 articles are available, there is on from the NY Times that focuses on the song, "Where Did You Sleep Last Night." An article I found interesting. Enter the FAQs, containing two you should be familiar with: Kurt's and Krist's Equipment FAQs. If it only had Dave's equipment FAQ as well. Also in the informational genre is the songs that Nirvana covered and bands that covered Nirvana songs. In the Kurt Suicide Section, you'll find a poem the webmaster wrote for Kurt and an *gasp* edited version of the suicide note. What's edited? Just the parts that were not meant for the fans, such as the last line. IMO, I think the whole note should be up, but it's not for me to judge whether or not it should be accessible entirely. Then you have Kurt's first poem: "I hate Mom. I hate Dad. Dad hates Mom. Mom hates Dad. It simply makes you want to be sad."

Miscellaneous

There's a bootleg section that contains the following:

  • Bootleg Trading (links)
  • " FAQ v. 6.0.
  • " Discography.
  • " Seller FAQ.
  • Link to On A Mountain website.

You have two types of chatrooms. The first on is the ICQ chatroom, then you have the ever-so-regular JAVA chatroom. Which one should you use? If you do not have ICQ, you may want to go ahead and use the Java chatroom if your not familiar with the methods of ICQ. However it is very easy to use, but you won't see a Mirc-type room. Then you have the webmaster's personal ICQ contact list. You can also add yourself to the list. For more information on ICQ, go to www.mirabilis.com.

Finally, you have links to a few websites and a place to copy the website's banner.

Conclusion

Personally, I did not gain a whole lot from this page. I've seen the information on a lot of other pages. However if your an ICQ fan, you definitely should consider this page if you want to keep in touch with people. Also, if your new to the web and Nirvana sites, it wouldn't hurt to try that page out.
