Introduction

I have had the opportunity to watch Teenage Riot grow for quite a while.  I remember when the site was just starting out, and now it appears to be on of the most well-known Nirvana sites on the internet.  How far did it come along?  Quite far.

Download Test/Graphics

  • All browsers were closed before the test.

  • Address for the main page, or page that consists of contents, or the page that was viewed in the screenshot was pasted in the testing browser.

  • U.S. Robotics Practical Winmodem 56k installed during test.

  • For Graphics:   Velocity 4400 18MB used (video card), IBM C50 used at 32-bit color and 1024x768 pixels (monitor).

Browser

Download Time

IE 5.0

*0:21

Neoplanet 2.1

*0:33

Netscape 4.6

0:45

Opera 3.51

0:51

Connection

34.6

IE and Neoplanet did not really download the fastest.  Infact, I believe that the page downloads faster with Netscape, or they are quite similar, that is what the stars are for.  The main problem with the extensive download time is the large image that is presented on the page (which is 80,165 bytes, large for an image).

Total images: 5  Total bytes: 172, 005
105 seconds @ 14.4
52.5 seconds @ 28.8
27.02 seconds @ 56

That is what really killed the download time, the images.  In Opera there is a feature that will allow you to turn off images.  When you turn on that option, the page downloads in less than 2 seconds.

The layout on the page has somewhat improved; but you can expect different results in different browsers.  The background is black, the page's texts and other colors are dark.  The image to the left is not really necessary, there are other options.  I do like how it made the nice table that is to the right.  The hyperlinks at the bottom will vary too, in Netscape and Opera it is neon green, but in IE/Neoplanet it is dark blue.  Another problem I found was the large amount of space between the table on the right and the image on the right.  Otherwise, the layout is great.

The Page

There's not to much of a variety of sections on this page, so I thought one section that describes the page's content would be enough.

Geffen doesn't like 'em, but Nirvana fans seem to...they are bootlegs, otherwise unauthorized recordings.  The bootleg part goes to Dentage Records (see review), a great website with that kind of material.

For those of you out there that like to chat, Teenage Riot does offer a room that you can chat in.  However, the link to the chat does not work.

There are quite a few links available on the site.  The author promises to add a feature that will allow you to add your own sites automatically without e-mailing the author or just being on of his favorite pages.

Now we're getting somewhere with the multimedia section on the page.  The section has four sub-sections, namely: Picture Gallery, Sounds Station, Video Shoppe, and a PC Corner.

  • Picture Gallery - Divided into four parts: Kurt, Krist, Dave, Band and Family pictures.  Kurt is honored with 45 pictures, the Krist, Dave, and Family sections are not working.  So that leaves out just about everything...

  • Sound Station - The first section is live sounds (13 in all), some are full length while others are not; in addition it will give the date and venue of the show for a few.  The studio sounds (32) claim to be in higher quality, and they probably are.  If you want to hear Kurt and Krist talk (14) (those are the only two sections available in this part), you can.  The Covers section does not work.

  • Video Shoppe - There are only 3 files in this section.

  • PC Corner - Link does not work.

The link for the miscellaneous section does not work.  Still, there is a message board you can check out.  As for the Texts section, you can find information on: The Band, Articles, Interviews, Guitar tabs, Lyrics, "Polly" story, Fan stories, In Utero symbols meanings, website reviews, awards, drummer jokes, and a miscellaneous section.  For the most part there is really nothing new here, but it does offer a variety somewhat.  Keep in mind that not all the links work, and I think it has to do with the page just changing servers.  If building a website is difficult for you, the page gives a link to a Nirvana site that does that for you, Aero Zeppelin Worldwide Webpage Productions.

Conclusion

Teenage Riot has changed in ownership and other things as well.  The graphics on this page are good, but it could fix some of the errors.  I am pleased with the way the site has been handled, although not all of the links and things like that work, I am pleased to see Teenage Riot still alive, and I hope it stays around.
