The Foo Fighers Internet Archive Reviewed on October 15, 1998 @ 11:07 PM Only a few Foo Fighters pages have been reviewed by Nirvana In Nirvana. The [Foo Fighters] pages that are reviewed are reviewed for their quality. Don't get me wrong, not all pages I have reviewed are not considered good by most people, but what I try to accomplish is to point out the kind of pages that are out there. Besides, it's nice to see what Dave has been up to...a new band, old friends... Graphics | Information | Multimedia The graphics on this page are comparable to those of Never Fade Away. How true. The page has a black background. Under the page's logo is three columns. On the left-center column is the first image map, containing the site's contents. In the center column a recent picture of the band; finally, on the right-center column is more of the site's content. Very organized, simple, and effective. Alas, the page lives up to the name it claims, "Foo Fighters Internet Archive." And what an archive it is. The first section is news. It's updated reguarly or when there is something going on. Unlike most Foo Fighters pages nowadays, it does not have news from two years ago. Although it does have older news from each month. As for the tour dates, you can view some of the ones that coming up -- not the older ones. The discography is organized precisely. They are divided up into:
And you'll also find tabs on this page. Guitar, bass, and of course, drum tabs. LIke the discography they are separted, so you click on where you want to go. Afterwhich you are lead to a page that is used as a whole table. You have the album (or single) name and the track list under it. This page has some essential FAQs also. Take a look at the Foo Fighters FAQ, Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins (the drummer), Nate Mandel (the bass player) and Frank Stanz (Dave's former band mate from Scream and second guitarist) equipment FAQs. The looking back section is probably one of the most original sections in any Nirvana or Foo Fighters pages I've seen. It goes through all the [former] members of the Foo Fighters, listing former bands they were in. You click on the band name and you have some information on that bad, sound files if available, and a few links if available. There is also a section called Covering Foo. This contains songs that other bands that I have never heard of that have covered some of the Foo Fighters songs. The Reading Room should keep you busy with a lot of magazine and online articles, in addition to live concert and album reviews. There are a lot of other things such as chat logs and tour information. You can also submit some information as well. The 1998 Tourbook is not only helpful, but it contains a lot of things inside that. You have a set of shows, you click on the show and you get a review of the show, as well as the setlist. This page also has lyrics off each album, including some singles and b-sides. The graphical setup is the usual. The bootlegs section gives you several on what to trade and whom to trade it with. Along with other options, for instance, their trading rules. Then there's the section called, Foo Approved. It regards to bands that the Foos have toured with, the dates of that tour, and then some background information of that band. Then there's the Informational section. Containing things such as: FF Dictionary, Song List, Covers list, Live Recordings, Recording Sessions and finally a concert chronology. Let's talk about the video guide. This is yet another interesting section. A section that gives details about live recorded shows. The dates they took place, the venue, and the setlist. Not to forget a picture from a show, if available. It has it from '95 to '98. The MP3 files are not the usual ones from the albums per se, they are more like rare songs or ones from live shows, a very helpful menu and a scroll down bar should help you out. I'm not aware of the lenghts of the songs either. Then & Now is a section that has information on the songs that the FFs have covered from other bands. You can compare by listening to a Real Audio file of the original song and the Foo's version -- yet another original section under wraps. The merchandise section contains links to online stores or sites that has Foo Fighters shirts, CDs, and bootlegs. All this looking around is getting kind of stressful isn't it? Well, let's relax with a few games. They are: a slider puzzle, a quiz (I got 8 out of 10), a harder slider puzzle, and a word search. The photo gallery seems complicated as it is, so here's an analyzed look at it:
Wow, a lot of pictures isn't it? Now they have some things for you to download. They have essential programs (i.e. Winamp, mIRC v. 5.41, Case Liner 5.92, 'n more). Then there are some fonts, Windows 9x/NT themes, and MIDI files. Some miscellaneous stuff on this site: stuff about Pat's solo album, Dave's Drummer Jokes, the story of the Germs and a little more stuff, also. You can also send you suggestions to the site by filling out a form. There's also a section called Interact. What does it have to do? Well, Foo Fighters fan's ICQ numbers of course! In addition to a survey and a WWWBoard. Furthermore, you can use search engines right on their site. There's some links to other FF sites as well. Last, but not least, there are sections for "Thank Yous" and stuff about the page. This is definetly a must-see Foo Fighters page. Something that you should definetley consider. The review took over two hours for me to do, and yet it was worth it. The site is easy to navigate, fast download, and it's just great. Too bad there are not too many Nirvana pages like that. *cough* |
