In the 1980's, a form of music was starting in a city in Washington named Seattle. Bands started this form of rock music that was rough, punkish and even some pop -- but not metal. Not all of the 'grunge' bands were from Seattle. Nirvana, a band with Kurt Cobain, Chris Novoselic and Chad Channing (or Dale Crover, on some shows), toured around Washington. Venues in Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia and sometimes Portland were their 'bread and butter' (as Krist said is the Wishkah liner notes). The record label that everyone was talking about was Sup Pop. However in September of 1991, 'Smell Likes Teen Spirit' aired on MTV. This is when grunge started to wear off. With that in mind, let's go to the review.
The thing about this page, with the bottom frame, is the graphics. With a nice logo on top and some other things to guide you around the site. You will find two columns on this page. One is left-aligned and the other is right. The right side contains site updates and Nirvana information for some part. The other side, at the moment, has a 'Adding to my site?' vote which will allow you to tell him what you want to see in the site. Back to the right side now, and you will notice some very useful information.
Now we continue to scroll, and after what appears to be the end of the page, actually, just a waste of space. Again we arrive to the two columns as in the above section. 'Multimedia' and 'Other stuff.' The pictures section contains 272 today. You will find the following categories and the number of pictures:
Pictures |
Number available |
Band | 99 |
Kurt | 84 |
Krist | 14 |
Dave | 23 |
Family | 14 |
Album covers | 20 |
Other | 18 |
Total | 272 |
As far as I can see in the picture sections, none of the are broken, in addition, great quality scanned thumbnails. The next section is for MIDI files. Here you will find all the regular albums (minus Wishkah). It also has rarities. Please not that not all the songs for the albums are not available for download, but most are.
The videos section contains a decent amount, in my opinion. They are from MTV, however he gives you advice on how to make it work! The sounds section also contains a decent amount. Here you will find a section on this part where you can request a song. Furthermore, you have different sections containing the files. Concerts, live, rarities, album songs, singles and compilations, covers of Nirvana, interviews, and talking. Altogether 192 Real Audio clips. 'You Compare' is a section in which you can listen to the original version and Nirvana's version. They are not in the same order, and, Nirvana's section does not contain as much as the original's section. In addition, you will see information on when they played a particular song and the show, the original artist which will be found in a chart. As for the articles, you will find some of them in text and scanned form. That's right, the actual pages are scanned and you are able to read it as if you were looking in the magazine itself, it also contains the covers for the ones that do have this option. The 'Spur of the Moment' contains information about 'The ''Priest'' they call him,' you will also be able to download it on Real Audio or buy it at Amazon.com.
Bleach, Nevermind, Incesticide, In Utero, Unplugged from N.Y., and B-sides and rarities. These are all the sections in the 'lyrics.' You can click on either song that is listed under the album name, and it will automatically take you there. Only one song, which is in the B-sides section, is not available. The links section seems to be the one that has been updated. You will find some pages, and just a 'brief' description on his thoughts on the site. Not a whole lot of links, however it's a start.
'Name that song.' Here you will download a file in which it contains a few songs, you try to guess the song and if you guess it correctly you will win some bootlegs. It's quite appealing to get some bootlegs for free...well, almost. :) Speaking of quizzes, you can take a 10-question quiz. If your in the mood the buy a few CD's and/or books. Take note that most of the Geocities links in this section does not work, on the other hand the CDNow! links do. There is also a section where it lists the webrings that the site is affiliated with. At the bottom of the main page there is a submit icon where you can vote for Kurt as one of the Most Influential people of the last 100 years.
At the bottom frame, there is a link to click on, doing this will turn on the MIDI song. Also there is a pull-down menu that has the contents on this site, instead of going through the two columns and back or back to the main page.
Conclusion
This is an excellent site in most parts. The good parts of the site are found on the main page, in the 'Page updates' section. Also, the movies are good, the most original part I have found are the articles for those which are scanned. A great site to look at, great information, and great multimedia.
