  Page: Oh, The Guilt
  Reviewer: Robert Brooks

Introduction

Oh, The Guilt has been up for quite a while now.  The page's success can be linked to it's multimedia sections.  From my understanding, it has lost a lot of it's multimedia files due to server problems.  That doesn't matter, right?

Download Test/Graphics

  • All browsers were closed before the test.

  • Address for the main page, or page that consists of contents, or the page that was viewed in the screenshot was pasted in the testing browser.

  • U.S. Robotics Practical Winmodem 56k installed during test.

  • For Graphics:   Velocity 4400 18MB used (video card), IBM C50 used at 32-bit color and 1024x768 pixels (monitor).

Browser Download Time
IE 5.0 0:24
Neoplanet 2.1 0:27
Netscape 4.6 0:32
Opera 3.51 0:36

It was pretty difficult to get the exact timing for IE and Neoplanet, but I can honestly say that it is about the same as Netscape's download time.  What can be attributed to the download time?  Quite noticeably is the Xoom Ad frame at the top of the page (for those of you who don't know, Xoom members have no choice on this).  That is probably what increased the download time by about 10 seconds I think.  The page's layout is pretty organized and straightforward.  You have a table that is in the center margin of the page, which has a picture in the middle and the sections by it's side -- the kind of touch that this page has always had.  At the bottom of the page you'll find some images and Site News, things like that.

Information

There's plenty of information on Oh The Guilt, and just about anybody who is looking for some kind of information will be impressed.  The first section that relates to information is the Murder Theory.  This theory, written by Guilt's webmaster Chris White, briefly explains both sides to the theory, but from reading this we understand that he supports the theory that Kurt was murdered:

"Although the death certificate says the cause of death was a self- inflicted shotgun wound to the head, with all the inconsistencies and misinformation, the least the Seattle police could have done was investigate as if it were a murder."

As for the source of navigation to the sections, at the bottom of the pages are pull-down menus that will allow you to visit your area of choice.  I selected the Lyrics section, a section that is common to most Nirvana pages.  Although the scroll-down menus look great and work in an efficient manner, I suggest a new way to distribute the menu.  Maybe a little cup of Java would help.  The lyrics are there, nothing is missing.

The one information webpage that seems to provide enough information is the Nirvana FAQ.  A similar section would be the Discography, which list official recordings and records. Here you will find some outstanding information about the band's history.  There are three sections that relate to Equipment: Kurt's, Krist's, and Dave's.  The first link takes us to Kurt's Equipment FAQ webpage, Krist's equipment info describes the instruments he used in recording sessions and tours, while Dave's equipment information provides, as we can expect, a few things. (There is a latter section on the page that has quite a lot of the drum tabs, in addition the the drummer jokes).

Speaking of Recording Sessions, the next section I am going to tell you about describes just that.  It tells you about Nirvana's recording sessions, and information about the songs that were recorded and any format they are currently traded in.  Although not fully information related, there is the death note in text and then a picture of the note, following that is Kurt's death certificate; then there is Kurt's obituary.

Then there is the well-known Timeline, which is set in a newer type of format by the webmaster.  What would be really cool is to see a horizontal scrolling timeline..hmm.

If you're looking for a way to find other Nirvana pages, you should have no problem with this page, the page has webrings to look at, a webring to join, and links to view.

Multimedia

A big part of Oh, The Guilt was MP3 files.  From my understanding, the page had some server conflicts and thus lost the files, but that does not entirely mean that there is no multimedia stuff on the page.

For example, there is a section for Pictures.  There are a total of 175 pictures in all, pretty impressive.  Some of the pictures you may be familiar with, some you may not, the page does offer a good variety.

As for the MP3 files, it goes directly to The Nirvana Sounds Network, and affiliate of the page, which offers an extensive amount of sounds in a variety of formats.

Finally, you have a voting both you can go to and a section for your computer that has files you can download.

Conclusion

Although the page hasn't been updated for a while (we all have personal lives, don't we?).   The success of Oh, The Guilt has grown steadily regardless of it's lack of updates, something that I admire.  The page still offers it's original content, and it makes you feel at home.  I think Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz says it perfectly: "There's no place like home."
