Reviewed for the month of June
"The only online music magazine inspired by
Nirvana...and created by the fans." And this is a must-see
site for Nirvana (related) information. Although it is update
monthly, I will try to keep it as fresh as possible.
For every issue there is probably a change in the outlook of the page. It's really a complex site, graphically--very exotic. However, in every issue, there are columns, stories, and possibly an interview, either old or new. Usually they have a big article, on a Seattle band.
In the 'Feature Articles' section, there are usually one are two articles about any given subject--hence they are editorials, but they also give facts as well. In the 'Monthly Columns' section, you will find, are columns done by the people at Opinion Magazine. The first one is 'Frances Farmer's Market.' This applies to the city of Seattle itself. The subject? Well, it's about Seattle. What goes on around there, the good and the bad. The next one is, 'Seattle Sound, Sounds Great.' And you may have gotten the idea about that already, but if you are not sure, it contains an article, usually on Seattle band, or just the Seattle-music scene now.
Also in the 'Monthly Columns' is the 'Lounge Act.' It mostly focuses on un-signed or bands on a small reocrd label that, in their opinion, are good and deserve some recognizition. Also, they have some of their songs there so you can listen to them. 'Use Just Once And Destory' is a section that focuses on the 'Equipment used by Kurt Cobain.' It does just that, or it does, for some part. It is not a FAQ, but it does focus on, for one thing, guitars. In the 'In Your Hands: Nirvana Collectibles' section, it is a section for bootleggers. Normally you will find some very neat things, anything that is rare and has to deal with Nirvana. Not only is it informative, moreover, it also gives you information on where you can get the things, most of the time. If that was not enough, then you can 'Ask Mr. Moustache.' This is a section where you can ask just about any Nirvana question you like. The catch is that it must be picked and it will be published on-line.
In the 'Music News' section, you will find pretty much any interesting (Nirvana and non-Nirvana related) news in the industry. You click on the news that you are interested in, then it will bring you up to a page where the column on that news is. It does have a weakness however, it is only updated monthly; in addition, many things happen in one month--especially in the music industry.
In the Reviews section, there are: Music and Movies; Concert; and (*gasp*) website reviews. :) Most of the music and movies reviews are either old albums (i.e. Incesticde on vinyl), or anything else. It does not contain all Nirvana material but it does pretty much that. As for the website reviews, which are done by David Perle. As you know, he has the wonderful links page that everyone copies. Note: The Concert Reviews are not avaliable this month.
The 'Mail Bag' section, is where fans write in and give their Opinion on a given subject, and/or an article that OM did a few issues back. Also there are usually contests you can enter into each month, and if you win, you get a t-shirt. In the 'Staff and Credits' section, there is a list of the people of Opinion Magazine, who did the columns, what the specify in (i.e. reviews, columns), and the people that help make the magazine possible to be on the Internet.
The 'Back Issues' are coming soon. However from my experience they give a list of the magazine issue, there you will find just pratically as if you were, for example, in the October '97 issue. You would find all the articles, columns, and reviews there. The Classifieds section is pretty obvious, but you can read about how you can have your classified in there.
Let's not forget that you can 'Quick Search' the site, in addition, you can get the Opinion Magazine newsletter telling you when it's updated, and other such news.
Conclusion
This is a very good site, no questions about that. You can find what you want very easily. However, it may be a disapointment to the 'stereotypical' Nirvana fans. It does offer more than just Nirvana information. Which is not bad by all means. It gives out a wonderful source of information, and reviews. 70% of the site is roughly Nirvana (related) stuff. You should visit it if you have the time to do so, because it has a lot of things you will want to look at.
