Moving Past The Past
It's been several years since Kurt died. Why can't we leave Dave, Chris, and everyone else alone?
Okay, many of you will say, 'What do you mean?' Simple. We still take them as 'The guy from Nirvana.' I agree that Dave was a drummer extrodrinare, and that Chris was an awesome bass player. That was six years ago.
It's time to get over it.
Want proof? I got proof for ya pal. Let's say you got a chance to meet either 1) Dave, 2) Chris, 3) Courtney, or anyone else (Chad, Jack Endino, Dan Peters, Aaron, etc). The first set of questions you will probably ask, or a conversation may start off with a Nirvana related question.
Dave belongs in a band called the Foo Fighters now. Chris (or Krist, but I like calling him Chris ;) ) takes an active part in many organizations and is in a band called Sweet 75. Pat was in the Foo Fighters, but he left. Courtney was in the movie The People Vs. Larry Flint, and is still in her band, Hole. Chad is in the Methodists, which has just released their debut album, Cookie.
Does this mean we should forget about Nirvana? The music, their passion? No. Never. But if bother Chris and Dave about it, what good is it going to do? They have moved on, and so do we. They both got hair cuts and neater clothes.
I will pull a strong example for everyone. Paul McCarthy. As you [should] know, he was part of the great band, The Beatles. Now, they did break up, and sadly John Lennon was assinated. But people do not necessarily bother Paul about being a part of the band. Of course, he does not mind it that much. Nonetheless, people still respect him. But they were popular thirty years ago, and your parents should have grown out of it by now. They may listen to them still, and that's okay.
Of course, we are still in the decade that grunge broke, and we still have yet to recover from it.
Yes, Dave and Chris (and even Courtney) were part of a great thing. But it's time to let it die away. Not the music, but the questions, the comments, the 'sterotypical' Nirvana fans. Maybe thirty years from now we can ask them questions, but untill then, we have the music.
In addition, I strongly suggest you do not listen to their bands because they were in Nirvana. If you like it, listen to it. But do not go to their shows wearing a Nirvana shirt. It means you are living in the past.
It's time to move past the past...
