Introduction

There are many sites around the internet.  There are also plenty of Nirvana sites around the internet.  For those of us who want only the best out of the page (don't we all), we tend to forget about the sites that offer something that the other sites do not, or lack there of.

Connectivity Test

About the test:

  • All browsers were closed before the test.

  • Order of testing were in alphabetical order.

  • Address for the main page, or page that consists of contents, or the page that was viewed in the screenshot was pasted in the testing browser.

  • Time was ended when the icon in the top right hand corner stopped.

  • U.S. Robotics Practical Winmodem 56k installed during test.

  • Time shown in minute/second format.

  • Read the Disclaimer for more information.

Browser Time
Internet Explorer 5 0:16
Opera 3.15 1:05
Neoplanet 2.0 0:23
Netscape 4.01 0:49

I think the reason why Opera took such a long time to download was the fact that it looked so bad under this page.   What's the problem?  Well, I think it has something to do with the HTML of the page.  Everything else finished under a minute.  The reason why IE won was because the page is optimized for it in every way.

Disclaimer: The connection test was done on a 56k Winmodem connected at 32k bps.  Remember download times will vary depending on your modem speed, browser, server of the page, telephone line activity, and your internet service provide (ISP).  This will not guarantee that the page will download at the same rate on your computer as it does mine, this is just an estimate.

Graphics

About the test:

  • Matrox Millenium G200 8MB used.

  • ASTVision 4I monitor used at 16-bit color and 800x600 pixels.

  • Browsers viewed: IE   5/Opera 3.51/Netscape Navigator 4.01/NeoPlanet 2.0.

Totally Unplugged has gone through many, many interface changes.  Each time it keeps getting better and better.  The browser looks great in 800x600 resolution, 16-bit color.  You can go with either IE or Netscape (Neoplanet is similar to IE).  Nevertheless, if you want to take full advantage of the features that the page has, IE would be your most vailable option.

The layout of the page is a fairly simple and complex layout.  The top of the page consists of a lovely logo, with flashes and darkens automatically -- neat feature.  You'll notice that the page uses lines to separate the different sections, namely, three sections.  On the far-right section are the images that pertain to the sections on the page.  The center section has the page's news and updates.  The far-right section has images for Top __ Nirvana sites.

Information

Totally Unplugged does not seem to have as much information as it does multimedia.  But there is still information found on this page.

  • Articles - Different articles listed by sections.  In the Nirvana related section, you'll find original articles typed up by the webmaster about the particular topic.  The next one deals with Kurt, which includes a text version of the suicide note as well as an article on the reasons and points that Kurt did kill himself.   There is one article about Courtney in the, you guessed it, the Courtney related section.  There are also to miscellaneous articles.  Overall, the articles section features some things you will most likely not find on other pages, because it's original.
  • Links - This is a simple and brief explanation from the webmaster about the links: "These are links to some of my favorite Nirvana and Hole sites. Whenever I see a site that I really like or enjoy, I will put a link for it up here. This page is hardly ever updated cause most of the Nirvana sites out there nowadays are complete rip offs. I will just put original sites up here." Indeed, you'll find some original sites in this list.  It also gives a brief description of each site.  This is a fairly good list, because it is large enough to offer a variety, but small enough to visit them all. :)
  • Memories - This is not necessarily information per se, but I think you could call it information.  What is the information?   Real fans who share their thoughts and feelings about Kurt.  The form to fill out is very neat and straight to the point (although I did get a Javascript error).
  • Reviews - Totally Unplugged does reviews for Nirvana sites, too.  It does a fairly good job at the reviews.   Right now there are only a few, but you can check them out by clicking on their link.  What is so great about the reviews on this site is that it is short, simple, and to-the-point.  If you want your site reviewed, all you have to do is fill out a form.

Multimedia/Other

This page seems to have a tad bit more information than it does information.  Is that bad? Not at all.  The problem is if that the multimedia is as original and good as the information.

  • Bootlegs - One of the few bootleg traders that does not charge a price, you'll find this site convienent for it's fairly good list in the following: compact discs, tapes, and videos.  You'll also find a list of things that are being sent to the webmaster, as well as a list of some good traders.
  • Pictures: I am not sure about the total number of pictures, but I would estimate there are about 110+ pictures that the site has. It shows them very well too.  There are about seven pages with pictures ranging from 15 to 32.
  • Show - This is the newest multimedia section to the site.   Here you'll find the date and venue for the show, the tracklist.  The links found in the tracklist are is the file for the particular song.  All files are in Zip format.
  • Web design - A link to Scrath Acid Designs, a new Nirvana design site.
  • Webrings - A list of webrings that the site is affiliated with are listed and shown in this section.   You can also join Totally Unplugged's  webring.

Conclusion

Totally Unplugged has definitely come a long way.   The site has grown, deleted things, made additions, and changed.  It is a very original site.  The only thing that is probably not original are the pictures, but that is to be expected -- the pictures section is good though.  I really enjoyed the editorials though, and some of the other things as well.  I strongly recommend it pursues that.  Totally Unplugged is made for us, and that is what it is.
