January
30th, 2001 - Rush back in the studio
For
the first time since the summer of 1997, the members of Rush are back
together making music. Singer-bassist Geddy Lee confirmed to JAM! Music
Friday that he, guitarist Alex Lifeson and drummer Neil Peart have ended
a lengthy hiatus and gathered in a Toronto-area studio to begin work on
a new record.
"We
are all back together now, and we are just starting that process of writing,"
Lee told JAM! Music on Friday in an exclusive interview.
"It
is too early to say anything concrete has gone down. We are just getting
to know each other again and getting comfortable with the prospect of
hanging out together for the next couple of months."
On
Wednesday, the threesome met up at the studio, but most of the time since
then has been spent setting up their gear and working out technical bugs.
A cold hit guitarist Alex Lifeson, which further put a crimp in the momentum,
as well as the fact that the studio has been a beehive of activity.

FIRST-EVER SOLO ALBUM FROM RUSH’S VOCALIST/BASSIST
Anthem/Atlantic
Records has announced the upcoming release of the debut solo album from
Geddy Lee, the voice and bassist of the legendary power trio, Rush. The
highly-anticipated collection - dubbed “MY FAVORITE HEADACHE” - is due
in stores on November 14th. Following more than a quarter-century of success
with Rush - including 22 albums, all certified RIAA gold-or-better, with
cumulative worldwide sales of over 35 million - “MY FAVORITE HEADACHE”
finds Lee joined in the studio by guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Ben
Mink and drummer Matt Cameron (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden). The album’s 11
diverse new Lee compositions were co-written with Mink (best known for
his collaborations with k.d. lang). This landmark recording sees Lee taking
on a number of instruments - along with his bass and vocal duties - including
piano, guitar, percussion, and various programming elements. Recorded
in Seattle, Vancouver, and Toronto, the album was produced by Lee, Mink,
and renowned studio whiz David Leonard (Santana, Barenaked Ladies, Prince),
and also features drummer Jeremy Taggart (Our Lady Peace) on one track.
Rush
to enter studio in October 2000 (4/2/00)
What's
the band been up to lately? After a three year hiatus, RUSH is anticipating
going back into the studio to record their 17th studio album in October
2000. (That's right, you heard it here first). But most recently, on the
'big budget Hollywood film front', Alex and Geddy contributed their guitar-layered
version of their country's national anthem for the "South Park, The Movie.
Bigger, Longer and Uncut" soundtrack. Alex states matter-of-factly, "Geddy
and I recorded 'O Canada' for the South Park soundtrack here in my home
studio, standing at attention during the entire recording process...".
FINALLY NEW NEWS! Rush
rumblings (12/8/99)
Rush drummer Neil Peart has once again picked up his
drumsticks following a pair of personal tragedies over the last two years.
Though he has yet to join forces with bandmates Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson,
the trio does have plans to record a new studio album in the year 2000.
However, word has it that they plan to no longer tour. The band has also
delayed the release of the companion DVD to their most recent live album,
Different Stages, until sometime in the new year.
Rush inducted to the Canadian Walk of
Fame (6/2/99)

Canadian Walk of Fame, an award honoring Canadian talent. All three members
of Rush will be on hand at the official unveiling, which is being held

Nothing New for a while...(3/16/99)
I guess the band is just waiting on Neil...Assuming Neil
wishes to still beat those skins, I am guessing they will put out another
album eventually. We can only hope.
DIFFERENT STAGES RELEASED!(11/10/98)
The new live album,"Different Stages", was released today.
It contains 3 CDs. Two of the CDs are from live sets from T4E and Counterpart
shows, while the 3rd CD is from a concert in 1978. Great sound. Great
music. Get it!
Rush is not in danger of breaking up(11/1/98)
The Calgary Sun
October 29, 1998
Band gives Peart time to grieve
by David Veitch
Rush is not in danger of breaking up.
The band is just in a holding pattern.
At least, that's the viewpoint of Alex Lifeson, guitarist for the venerable
Canadian rock trio, which has no long- or short-term plans beyond the
Nov. 10 release of the triple-CD live set Different Stages. Lifeson and
bassist-singer Geddy Lee are giving drummer-lyricist Neil Peart time to
grieve the loss of his wife Jackie to cancer this year, following the
death of their 19-year-old daughter in a car accident in 1997.
"As far as the band is concerned, we're just waiting for Neil to really
get better," Lifeson said in a telephone interview yesterday. I don't
think he'll be the person he was, but I think he will cope with life again.
Hopefully, eventually, he'll be able to find joy in all the things he
did in life before."
Such as, presumably, playing drums and writing lyrics for Rush.
"I got to think in my heart there are things about what we do that Neil
really loves a lot and is not prepared to give up," Lifeson said.
But the musician admitted he and Lee, both 45, have "spent hours and hours"
talking about the tragic turn of events. They've decided there will be
no Rush without Peart.
"I wouldn't do it," Lifeson said. "I love working with Ged and Ged is
my best friend.... We would probably continue working together in some
form, but I don't think it would be Rush. It would never be the same."
Lifeson, a friendly and forthcoming interview, spoke with great gravity
when discussing the potential end of Rush. After all, he has spent his
entire adult life in the 29-year-old band. Conversely, he spoke with great
excitement about the prospect of future Rush studio records and, of course,
the imminent release of the band's fourth live album (following 1976's
All The World's A Stage, 1981's Exit ... Stage Left and 1989's A Show
of Hands). Fans will probably be most excited by Disc 3, a previously
unreleased concert recorded in 1978 at Hammersmith in London, England,
during the Farewell To Kings tour. Meanwhile, Discs 1 and 2 are live recordings
culled largely from the band's last North American tour behind the Test
For Echo album. Disc 1 ends with the title suite for Rush's 1976 breakthrough
album, 2112. Local Rush fans may be particularly interested in Different
Stages, as the group bypassed Calgary on both its Counterparts and Test
for Echo tours. The band last played in the city in 1990.
"We don't play 180 shows any more," Lifeson explained. "The last tour
was about 84, 85 shows.... I know Neil, over the years, is less interested
in touring than perhaps he was in the past. I mean, we all go through
that. So, we only had so many days we could work and it was a case of
going to what's on the A-list."
Although Rush has no future plans, Lifeson ruled out any possibility of
a compilation of unreleased material.
"We've always had a policy that we only wrote and worked on songs that
were going to be on the records," he said.
"So we never wrote any more music or recorded any unreleased material
ever."
Ever? "We've done a few things in the recording sessions, but they would
definitely get an X-rating," he offered tantalizingly.
For lyrical content or musical abomination? Lifeson laughed.
"Mostly lyric," he said, "but actually both when I think about it."

"Peart family wishes to grieve
alone" (Please, however moronic and ignorant
you might be, take this article as a clue and stop asking me for Neil's/Rush's
E-mail Addresses!)
By JANE STEVENSON -- Toronto Sun (July 8, 1998)
This past weekend's tragic news that Rush drummer Neil Peart lost his
wife, Jackie, to cancer has prompted an outpouring of grief from the band's
fans wondering where they can send flowers and/or condolences.
But Rush's Toronto-based management company, SRO, said yesterday:
"As per the family's wishes, it's kept very private. There's no service,
or any charity, or anywhere to send flowers etc. They just want to be
left alone at this very sad time."
Peart also lost his and Jackie's 19-year-old daughter, Selena, in a
car accident last August.

RUSH DRUMMER'S WIFE DIES OF CANCER
By JANE STEVENSON -- Toronto Sun
Tragedy has struck Rush drummer Neil Peart again. Peart's wife, Jacqueline
Taylor, is dead from cancer almost one year after the couple lost their
19-year-old daughter last August in a single-car crash. A spokesperson
for Rush's Toronto-based management company confirmed that Peart's wife
had died but declined to give details. Peart's daughter, Selena Taylor,
died when the Jeep she was driving left the westbound lane of Hwy. 401,
and crashed near Brighton, Ont.
