*Ventura is BBVD's hometown*

The Show
by: Myte Fine

I got off work early Thursday (my morning went surprisingly quickly). Then I took the train to Ventura..it was about a 2 hour trip. My train left at 2:55..got into Ventura around 5.   I got off at the Amtrak stop...it wasn't a station...just a pick up/drop off point. Anyway after waiting what seemed like eons for a taxi  I finally got to the hotel...the Best Western. And I was happy to find that the hotel was within walking distance of the theatre. So after I grabbed a quick bite to eat from the diner next door, I showered, dressed and left for the theatre around 7:30pm.

There was a long line to get in (I think it was sold out) but it moved quickly. The theatre itself is very nice and spacious. There was a pit area, a dance floor, tables and chairs, a bar in the theatre area and the lobby. I went in, looked around and then went to the bathroom. I went to the pit area...right  near the front of the stage. There was a group of teens in front of me but other than that, I had the perfect spot. I got very tired however and it wasn't until about 30-45 minutes later that The Blue Hawaiians came on stage. I didn't realize that there would be an opening act...duh> I was like oh dear...

But surprise...surprise...The Blue Hawaiians were very good. They played 5-6 songs. BBVD hung out in the backstage area...I could see some of the guys from where I was standing...and so did the teens...they were constantly looking in that direction and waving......Finally, The Blue Hawaiians finished and by that time the pit and surrounding area fille dup with people. While the crew was getting the stage ready for BBVD, we saw Dirk backstage again...the girls waved and so did I this time....he waved back to us enthusiastically (Lesley: isn't this how Dirk does *everything*??). The stage set up didn't take that long....voila..the lights dim, people start cheering, etc...then the band comes out...Scotty last.

Then they start with Big & Bad...I love this song!! And then they performed Big Time Operator...which Scotty said was for his mom...how sweet!!! The performance before the hometown crowed was excellent...excellent...excellent!!! They played tunes from the new release such as Some Things (my personal fav), I'm Not Sleepin,What's Next, I Wanna be Just Like You, Who's That Creepin plus You N' Me, Jumpin Jack, Go Daddy O, a very spirited version of Jump With My Baby....as someone previously posted, the solos were exceptional from all the band members as well as other tunes from the major label debut.  For the encore, the boys performed Minnie the Moocher and So Long, Farewell, Goodbye, complete with the Nirvana inttro at the end of the song....Overall....a great night.

Post show...the boys came out and signed autographs and talked with the fans. I introduced myself and chatted briefly with all the band members which was my intent. After all, I've seen them enough times this year. Well, I didn't leave until the last stage light was taken down and the
last Voodoo Daddy had gone.....I saw Dirk when I was leaving and said good bye and see you Saturday.....and that's my story on the Ventura show....
