Episode 127, "Never Put a Genie on a Budget", from the show's last season, is a very unique episodes. Of the 139 episodes from the series, it is the only one without a laugh track. The episode opens with Major Nelson, Roger, and Dr. Bellows walking through the corridors of NASA.. Roger and Dr. Bellows go ahead, and all of the sudden, a telephone booth pops up. Tony walks write into it, and receives a call from Jeannie. She's gotten her self into more trouble.. She calmly asks Tony to pick her up at the Cocoa Beach Jail on his way home.
After a little talk with Dr. Bellows, Tony goes to get Jeannie. There, he finds Jeannie was arrested for stealing $2,000 worth of merchandise! Jeannie explains she charged it.. but the police inform Tony that she doesn't have a charge account. The department store agrees to drop charges, as long as Tony pays for everything Jeannie "charged."
At home that evening, Tony announces to Jeannie that she needs to learn to live on a budget. Jeannie agrees, seeming very cooperative It turns out she's too cooperative.
At NASA the next day, Dr. Bellows tells Roger and Tony that a the Russian Major Gregorian is coming to Cocoa Beach. He assigned Roger to take him on a tour of the town, including the museum, library... Roger, who was ready to show the major all of his "hang-outs" in town isn't too excited. Dr.Bellows also tells Tony he is to entertain him for dinner the next evening.
The next day, Tony brings Major Gregorian home as planned. It looks like a normal evening at home, until Jeannie brings out dinner. After Tony had boasted about Jeannie's great cooking abilities, Jeannie serves two TV dinners.. and for desert.. an apple. Jeannie explains it's a way to save money. Major Gregorian, who is amazed by the size of Tony's house, figures out how they live so well.. they don't eat! Needless to say, Dr. Bellows isn't pleased when he hears of the dinner. He decides to give Tony one last chance. This time, he's to host Major Gregorian's farewell party. Dr. Bellows warns him that the guest list contains many V.I.P.s, and that nothing should go wrong.
At home that night, Jeannie is very excited to tell Tony all the new ways she has found to save money. These include not paying the electricity bill, or the water bill. The result is a house full of candles. Dr. Bellows is not pleased. He's even more dismayed when a group of hippies decide to come to the party. The hippies turn out to be friend's of the Nelson's new boarders another idea Jeannie had to save money.
A real "far out" party develops. Tony thinks he's ruined, until Major Gregorian announces that it was the best party he's ever been to! "Real Russian hospitality!" he exclaims!
As long as Major Gregorian's happy, so is Doctor Bellows. The episode closes as Jeannie hands Doctor Bellows a note. When Tony asks what was in the note, she replies, "It is a bill for the party."
