Fr Clifford has been told by Fr Mac that, unless he passes his driving test, then he will have to rethink his position. Everyone has found out that it is Peter's birthday but when he asks Assumpta out for a drink to celebrate, she tells him she's already going out. So is everybody else but when he turns up in Fitzgerald's for a quiet pint, he finds a surprise party organised by Assumpta. She offers to give him driving lessons.
While visiting the hospital, Peter meets an old man with whom he strikes up a friendship. The he treats Peter's profession very lightly and thinks that Assumpta is Peter's girlfriend.
During a lesson, Peter has
a crash and nearly kills himself and Assumpta and they have
a row. She tells him that because it's considered a priest's
perk, he will pass his test automatically and she only gave
him driving lessons because she didn't want to see him kill
himself behind the wheel. He goes to the test as Mr Clifford,
removing his collar and telling the examiner that Assumpta
is his wife. He passes and there is a big celebration in the
pub, again organised by Assumpta but he learns that his friend
in the hospital has died.
