Assumpta realises that all is not well with Peter and, when she asks him if he is all right, he tells her that he has been called back to England and it seems that Fr Mac is behind it. Assumpta is upset by the news but she doesn't let Peter see this.
Besides, she has problems of her own. Quigley has opened up a bar selling half price drinks for the duration of the festival. However, she is not convinced that he will stop once the festival is over. She rows with Niamh over it, two days before the wedding.
As time progresses, she realises that she is in real danger of losing her livelihood and Peter is stunned when she turns up at the church in tears, asking if she can go in. He tells her that she can talk to him any time but she refuses. She is finding it hard enough to be inside a church, never mind anything else. Peter leaves her alone, and when he returns, a rock has been thrown through the church window and there is no sign of Assumpta. He storms into Fitzgerald's only to find her all bandaged up, having nearly lost an eye to the flying brick. He feels guilty and patches it up properly for her. She is a nervous wreck, he is too close, physically and emotionally and she finds it hard to hold back.
Quigley agrees
to a race between himself and Assumpta to decide which bar
stays and Assumpta wins. The wedding goes ahead and, during
the party Peter slips out. Assumpta follows him and tells him
that she will miss him if he has to go. He tells her that he
is too late, the decision has been made. She hands him a
petition signed by all of the locals and says that she is
going to send it to the bishop. He asks her if she wants
him to stay. She doesn't answer him and walks away. He
scours the petition and finds that she too has signed it.
