Peter comes back from his retreat to find that whole village has got the hump. No one is speaking to anyone else, so he takes up the challenge of a rival publican to have a 'pub war' to see which pub has the most talented customers. He thinks that the village needs livening up, until Niamh tells him that Assumpta will liven things up enough when she gets home. She tells him that Assumpta went to London and married her old boyfriend from college, Leo McGarvey. Peter is stunned and walks out of the pub. He cannot believe that Assumpta has done that and, what makes it worse, he knows that he was the one that gave Leo the advice to be patient.
Anyway, Peter has more to deal with. On his arrival back in BallyK, he discovers that, due to financial difficulties, Brian has rented out the Priest's house to tourists and Peter is homeless. He takes up Niamh's offer of a room at Fitzgerald's but changes his mind when Assumpta arrives back unexpectedly with her new husband.
The whole village is shocked by Assumpta's news, but they are delighted for her, all except Niamh who is doubtful and Peter who is devastated. Fr Mac, however, is over the moon - Assumpta is no longer a threat to Peter. Peter cannot cope with what Assumpta has done, especially as she credits him with bringing her and Leo together at last. He doesn't want to hear it and sends her away with a rather cheap remark about instant weddings.
The night of the pub quiz arrives and, by a narrow margin, Fitzgerald's wins (of course!) due to a last minute effort by Donal and his recent knowledge of philosophy! Everyone is elated, but Assumpta has already run into problems with her new husband. Leo abandoned the quiz team in favour of a news story (remember? He is a journalist?) and what with feeling let down by him and seeing Peter again, things aren't going too well for Assumpta already . . .
