The Raging River
The sun shone down brightly on the small town,
that lay nestled in the hills of Georgia. A few fluffy white clouds dotted
the blue sky. It was a hot and quite humid summer's day. Most of the residences
of the small town were taking life at a slow pace, wishing for a break
from the sweltering heat of the summer.
A bright orange stock car raced along the
back roads in a cloud of dust. Its powerful engine breaking through the
silence, of the quiet summer day, with a mighty roar. It was being closely
perused by a sheriff's patrol car, a normal day in Hazzard County. Cousin's
Bo and Luke Duke were being chased by Sheriff Rocso P. Coltrane on some
trumped up charge.
"You know, I think Rosco's being getting too
much practise, ‘cause he's still hanging in back there." Luke said, glancing
over his shoulder at Rosco's car.
"Yeah." Bo agreed as he glanced in the rearview
mirror. "He won't be back there much longer though, I know just where to
lose him."
Luke smiled he knew exactly where his younger cousin meant, Hazzard
Creek. Bo pushed the accelerator further to the floor, pulling a little
further away from the patrol car. A couple moments later the creek came
into view.
"Hold on cousin." Bo said, his eyes sparkled
with a kind of child like mischief.
The orange car, know as the General Lee, hit the embankment of the
creek and became airborne, sailing gracefully above the water's surface.
"YEE-HAW!" Bo and Luke yelled simultaneously,
as their car flew through the air like a soaring eagle.
The General Lee slammed against the ground on the far side of
the creek. Bo pulled to a stop, so that they could watch Rosco's feeble
attempt at jumping the creek. They knew there was no way that Rosco would
make it across, for two reasons. Firstly, Rosco was nowhere near
as good of a driver as Bo and Luke. The Duke boys were by far the best
drivers in the entire Tri-County area, or perhaps even further. And Secondly,
Rosco's patrol car lacked the soul that the General Lee seemed to have.
Most people said that the Duke boy's car, General Lee, seemed to have a
soul and was almost human.
Rosco's patrol car hit the embankment of the
creek and began to sail across. The car was about half way across when
it started to quickly descend, and splashed into the creek, with a tremendous
splash.
Bo and Luke laughed as they watched Rosco
climb out, through the window of his car, soaking wet.
"Looks like he's okay." Luke said.
"Yeah. ‘Sides he's lucky." Bo said.
Luke raised his eyebrows in question. "How you figure?"
"‘Cause now he gets to go for a swim on such
a hot day." Bo said and laughed.
Luke chuckled in agreement. "Yeah. Now let's get back to the farm."
Bo nodded. "You got it."
About five minutes later they pulled to a
stop in front of the Dukes farm house. The house was small, with only three
bedrooms. Bo and Luke lived there with their Uncle Jesse and cousin Daisy,
though the house never seemed small. The old house was full of love, the
Dukes had always been a close bonded family.
Bo and Luke climbed out through the windows
of their car, as the doors were welded shut since they used the General
Lee in car races.
"About time you boys got home." Jesse said,
stepping off the porch. He had been sitting in the shade of the porch drinking
a tall glass of lemonade.
"Sorry we are late Uncle Jesse but we were
running a race with Rosco." Bo said.
"We gave him the chance to go swimming to
get a break from this heat." Luke added jokingly.
Jesse sighed and shook his head, he doubted that his two nephews would
ever grow up. Luke took the box of tractor parts they had just bought out
of the trunk. He carried the box over the where the tractor sat, in the
shade of a large old oak tree. Bo closed the trunk, and walked over to
join his older cousin. Jesse walked over to where the boys where.
"Did you get all the parts we need to fix
this old thing?" Jesse asked.
Bo nodded. "Yes sir Uncle Jesse. I'll go get the tools." Bo said as
Luke sorted through the box of tractor parts.
Jesse turned and left as Bo and Luke went about working on the tractor,
retreating into the house in hopes of finding a cool place to sit, perhaps
near a fan.
Bo and Luke spent the next hour and a half
working on the tractor. Their faces were covered with tiny beads of sweat.
They had long since removed their shirts, growing to hot with them on.
Their bare, muscular chest, glistened with sweat. Bo wiped the sweat from
his brow with the back of his hand. Even in the shade it was getting extremely
hot, to hot to be working on the tractor, but the wanted to get it done
as they had promised their uncle. Jesse came outside carrying two glasses
of ice cold lemonade. He handed one to each Bo and Luke. They both drink
nearly half the glass before stopping for a breath.
"I think you boys should stop working on the
tractor and come in for a while, it is a little cooler in the house." Jesse
said, his concern for their well being obvious in his voice.
Jesse loved Bo and Luke as though they were his own child, after all
he had raised them since the time they were very small babies.
Bo and Luke nodded. "Yes sir." they said at the same time.
"I'll just put the tools and parts away in
the barn. We can finish working on the tractor later." Luke said.
"Yeah maybe it'll be cooler come evening."
Bo said.
Jesse stood waiting, and holding the lemonade, as he watched Bo and
Luke both put away the tools and parts. Bo and Luke walked back over to
Jesse. They back their glasses of lemonade, and drank as they walked towards
the house.
Bo and Luke both felt relief feeling the cool
breeze the fan blew through the house, thinking it was almost as good as
wind. The coolness felt good to their hot bodies. They both slumped down
on chairs in the living room.
"What time is dinner? I am starving." Bo asked.
"When Daisy gets home from work." Jesse said.
"What time is Daisy done work?" Luke asked.
"Five o clock." Jesse said.
"What is for dinner?"Bo asked.
Jesse shook his head, at how both Bo and Luke both asking questions
to go with the others. They often did stuff like that or both say one sentence,
each saying part of it, always knowing exactly what the other one was thinking
and what they were going to say.
"There is still some pie left from last night
if you both are so starving you can't wait until dinner. I'll let you get
away with snacking so close to dinner, just this once." Jesse said.
"Sounds great." Bo and Luke said simultaneously.
They got up and walked into the kitchen to eat a slice of the left
over peach pie from the night before.
Daisy pulled to a stop in front of the house
in jeep, which was named Dixie. She was Bo and Luke's cousin. She was a
year older then Bo and a year younger then Luke. She stepped out of her
jeep. There was a slightly breeze starting to blow, giving a break from
the sweltering heat. Daisy glanced at the horizon and saw dark rain clouds
starting to gather, she hoped that they would soon get a much needed the
rain. The ground was cracked and trees and crops were beginning to wither.
She walked into the farmhouse, shutting the flimsy old screen door lightly
behind herself.
"Hey Daisy, how was work today?" Jesse asked.
"Busy. Some many people come into the Boar's
Nest for a cold beer." Daisy said.
The Dukes were just sitting down at the table to eat dinner when
it started to rain. The rain beat softly against the window pain in a slow
steady rhythm.
Daisy and Bo ran out into the rain to move
the General Lee and Dixie into the barn so their interior wasn't ruined
in the rain. Bo stepped out of the barn into the rain, allowing it soak
him, his clothes clung to his body like a wet towel. Bo smiled and closed
his eyes, he tipped his head slightly backwards to allow the rain to splash
against his face. Bo then turned to look at Daisy.
"Don't this rain feel great?" Bo asked, he
had a wide smile on his face. "It is sure better then that sweltering heat
we've been having."
"That's for sure." Daisy said in agreement.
Jesse shook his head as Daisy and Bo walked back into the farmhouse,
dripping wet.
"You two go change out of those wet clothes,
I ain't gonna have you dripping water all over my kitchen floor as you
eat." Jesse said, in firm tone, though he wasn't really angry at all and
the kids all knew it. It was just the way their uncle was.
"Yes sir." both Bo and Daisy said at the same
time, and they moved off to go to their bedrooms to change.
"And don't drip water all over the house either."
Jesse said.
Bo and Daisy returned to the kitchen moments later, both dressed in
dry clothes. Outside the rain steadily grew stronger, beating rapidly against
the window. The wind started to grow strong and it howled, like a wolf,
as it whipped around the corner of the house.
"Sounds like this is going to turn into a
real good storm." Jesse said.
"Guess we won't be working on the tractor
again today." Bo said.
By the time they had finished eating dinner the rain was pouring down
so hard that they couldn't even see the barn from the house.
Jesse frowned. "Such a heavy rain ain't good. We needed rain but heavy
rain can be destructive after such a long dy spell, and could lead to flooding."
The Dukes sat around in the living as the listened to the storm
rage on outside. Daisy sat and did some sewing, Jesse read a book and Bo
and Luke played a game of chess. They all figured that it would soon stop
raining so hard, but they were wrong. The storm only grow worse. The pouring
rain was accompanied by high winds along with thunder and lightening. The
all went to bed at ten, the storm still raging on. Each of the wondered
how long the rain would continue to pour down, and if they would have to
worry about flooding.
The next morning the rain had slowed to steady
pace but still refused to subsided. The Dukes looked outside, and saw that
there was large puddles of water all over the farm yard. They could see
the pickup truck, and that the back end was nearly half full with rain
water.
"Wow, we sure got a lot of rain last night."
Bo said.
"A lot more then we need, I'd say." Luke said.
Bo nodded in agreement. "And it don't appear like it is going to stop
anytime soon."
As if to punctate Bo's sentence the sound distant approaching thunder
rolled across the sky.
"Sounds like we are in for another storm to."
Bo said.
Within the hour the second wave of the storm was upon them. The rain
began to pour down again. It's steady beating rhythm against the roof of
the house was almost hypnotic. With the storm raging on outside there wasn't
much for the Dukes to do except sit around.
By late in the afternoon, the rain slowed
again. Though the sky was still filled with dark threatening clouds, that
looked as though they could break open and allow the rain to pour down
again at any moment. Bo and looked moved outside to sit on the porch. They
breathed in the cool air, enjoying the damp rain smell the air had. They
sat on the porch swing talking for a little over an hour, then went inside
to have dinner. After dinner the rain still hadn't picked back up
again, and just as everyone thought that the storm had passed it started
to pour rain again.
Jesse sighed and shook his head. "There is defiantly going to be flooding
once this rain finally subsides."
They spent another night listening to the rain beating against the
roof and the windows.
The next morning the rain had finally subsided.
Everything glistened with water. Bo and Luke stepped outside of the house
and looked around the farm yard. A couple moments later Jesse came outside.
"Me and Bo is going to take the General and
checking and see how bad the flooding is." Luke said.
"Just be careful." Jesse said.
"We always are." Bo said, as he and Luke headed
for the barn.
Jesse stood and watched as the bright orange car disappeared from site.
As they drove around the back roads they found
a lot of areas were flooded, but so far all the roads were passable. After
thirty minutes of driving the reached and area along Front river road.
Hazzard Pond was on the left side of the road and the Mill Pond was on
the right, only now both were merged together. The water flowing rapidly
across the road. Bo stopped the car a few feet from the water, they saw
a red sedan out in the middle of the water, though they paid little attention
to other car.
"Come on turn this thing around, we ain't
gonna get no further going this way." Luke said.
"Yeah okay." Bo said, just as he prepared
to turn the car, he caught site of movement in the red car. "There is still
people in that car."
Luke looked closer at the red car and saw Bo was right. Without speaking
any words they decided to help the people that were trapped in the car.
Luke opened the trunk and took out a heavy piece of rope.
"Good thing we didn't take this out of the
trunk." Luke said.
Luke securely fastened the rope to the grill protector of the General
Lee. Then tied the other end around his waist. Luke carefully began to
walk out into the water. He could feel the current trying to sweep him
away, but determinedly walked out into the raging water.
"You be careful Luke." Bo said, concern was
obvious in his voice.
"Always am." Luke responded.
It took Luke several minutes to reach the other
car. By which time the occupants were aware of there rescuers. In the car
was a woman in her early thirties and her two young children, ages six
and eight. Luke held on to the car tightly, as he untied the rope from
his waist and tied it to the bumper of the car. He carefully climbed up
onto the hood of the car, almost losing his hold on the slippery metal
of the car. He motioned for Bo to pull the car back out of the water. Bo
slid into through the driver's side window, and started to car. He tried
to reverse, but couldn't get the other car to move at all. The General's
back tires, sank into the soft mud of the dirt road as they spun around.
Bo climbed back out of the car.
"It is no use Luke, it won't budge." Bo yelled
at Luke.
Luke nodded, he knew that he would have to bring the people back along
the rope one at a time. He moved over to the slightly open back window,
holding on tightly to the door frame.
"Okay I am going to have to take you back
one at time. We can't budge the car." Luke said.
The lady in the car nodded, fear was apparent in her eyes, but Luke
could tell that she was trying to hide it to keep her children from becoming
even more scarred then they were already. She carefully rolled the window
down a little further, as far down as it could go before the water would
start to pour in. She carefully handed out her little girl, who was six.
The small girl wrapped her arms tightly around Luke's neck, and clung to
him with fear, as she felt the water rushing around her. Luke could feel
her small body trembling. He slowly, and carefully moved back to the rope.
Pulling himself forward in small movements Luke finally made it make to
solid ground, where Bo was waiting. Bo had got out a couple of old blankets
from the trunk of the car. He wrapped one blanket around the little girl
to start to dry her off, and picked her up and sat her on the hood of the
General. Luke went back out into the rushing water for a second time.
The lady in the car handed her second child,
a young boy, to Luke. Luke carefully took a hold of the little boy and
made his way back to the road. Bo took the boy from Luke and sat him on
the hood the General next to his sister. The two children wrapped their
arms around one another, as way of comforting each others fears. Bo watched
as Luke made his way back out into the water for a third time. Bo felt
a knot of worry clench at his stomach, he could sense that something bad
might possibly soon happen, he hoped that Luke would hurry up and get back
to where it was safe. Most all Dukes have a sixth sense when it comes to
sensing that a member of the family is in danger, and for Bo and Luke that
"bond" is even stronger. They are so close and preceptive of the other
one, that many people mistake them for being brothers.
The woman carefully made her way out of the
car into Luke's strong arms. Her mind was racing with fear but she made
her way to the rope, that hung in the water between the two cars. The rope
was slippery and she almost lost her hold, but was caught by Luke. She
was almost holding her breath as she continued to make her way back to
the road.
Suddenly a sound seemed to pierce through
the air, breaking the silence that had seemed to settle across the land,
the sound of the rope beginning to snap under the pressure.
"You have to hurry I doubt this rope is gonna
hold together much longer." Bo said, the knot of worry in his stomach had
grown tighter.
With no further warning the rope snapped in half, just behind where
Luke held it. Bo grabbed the rope with both hands and began to pull it
in, the rope was pulling and sliding in his hands, burning the soft flesh.
Bo gritted his teeth and took a deep breath and continued to pull the woman
and Luke in. He could faintly hear the soft worried cries of the children,
they sounded so distant to him, and not like they were just a few feet
away. Luke could feel himself losing his hold on the wet slippery rope
and tried to wind it around his wrist, there was only a few more feet to
go, and Luke prayed that he could hold on that long. The woman was only
a couple feet from Bo, he reached out with one hand, while firmly holding
the rope with his other hand. He wrapped his hand firmly around her wrist,
and she held on to him tightly as he pulled her the rest of the way in.
As soon as her feet touched the ground she rushed over to her children
and pulled them into and embrace. Bo continued to pull Luke in. Luke felt
the rope slid from his hands. Bo watched with wide eyes, as Luke was swept
away, he felt like his heart was in his throat. He dropped to his knees
and softly whispered Luke's name as he watched him go under the waters
surface and be swept away. Bo felt a soft hand on his shoulder.
"I am so sorry about this. If it wasn't for
you and your brother, I don't know what would've happened to me and my
children."
Bo didn't bother to correct her and say that Luke was his cousin not
his brother. Bo stood up and walked over to the CB to call Rosco for help.
"I am Cindy Mayfield, these are my children
Sally and Bishop." Cindy said, offering her hand for Bo to shake, as way
of introduction.
"Bo Duke." Bo said, his voice flat and distant
sounding, as he shook her hand.
Bo leaned against the car, waiting impatiently for the sound of Rosco's
sirens. In different circumstances he would have found it quite humorous
that he was actually waiting for the sound of Rosco's, and not dreading
it as normal. Though now he could only think of one thing, Luke was gone.
Cindy was holding her children and looked up at Bo. His hands were folded
together tightly, as though he was in prayer, she noticed that he had his
hands folded so tightly together that his knuckles were starting to turn
white. She could see tears shimmering in his eyes, and it looked like it
was all he could do to keep from crying. She felt her heart squeeze with
pity for this young man, who had just lost someone he was obviously very
close to. Bo hung his head down closing his eyes tightly, a few tears coursed
their way down his cheeks. The of Rosco's siren began to fill the air growing
closer and closer.
Rosco pulled his patrol to a stop just behind
the General, mere inches from hitting it. He got out of his car and looked
at the washed out road, then at the stranger and her two kids, finally
his eyes rested on Bo. Rosco walked towards where Bo was standing.
"All right what in the name of Sam Hill is
going on here?" Rosco asked.
Bo barely raised his head and looked at Rosco, his eyes read from tears.
Rosco looked puzzled as to what exactly was going on, and he wondered where
Luke was, it so such a rare thing for there only to be one of the Duke
boys, he couldn't even recall the last time he had saw one without the
other. The lady stepped forward and told Rosco what had happened up until
the Duke boys had arrived. Rosco walked over to Bo.
"Where's Luke?" Rosco asked.
Bo lifted his head and looked at Rosco, a few tears still streaked
his cheeks. "He . . . he was washed away by the water."
"Oh . . ." Rosco said, his voice trailed off,
his face held both a look of grief and pity. He looked at Bo. He could
tell that Bo wasn't taking things very well. "I am sure he is Bo, we'll
just search along the river I am sure that we will find him."
Bo sighed slightly. "Yeah, perhaps your right."
"Well of course I am right. Ain't I always?"
Rosco said in a joking voice.
Bo gave a small smile, though the smile wasn't reflected in his eyes.
Rosco turned back to Cindy. Bo untied the rope from the front of the General
and tossed it to on side.
"Ma'am I'll take you are your children to
Dr.Appleby, and get Cooter to tow your car out of the water." Rosco said
ushering them into his patrol car.
Bo started to get into the car, he sat on the door panel for a moment,
his hands visibly shaking. Rosco walked back over to him. He felt bad for
Bo knowing how close he was to Luke, and going through the possibility
of losing him was obvious extremely hard on him. He was always trying to
frame the Duke boys into prison, but he never wanted nothing bad to happen
to them, especially not something like this.
"You okay?" Rosco asked.
Bo nodded. "Yeah I am fine. I got to get back to the farm and tell
Uncle Jesse what happened."
"Once I take them to the doc I'll come here
and help you look for Luke. I am sure we will find him in no time." Rosco
said.
Bo said nothing further and slid into the car. Rosco walked back over
to his car and got in. He back the car down the road and turned around
to head back into town. Bo sat for a moment staring at the ragging water,
he prayed that Rosco was right and they would quickly find Luke and that
he was okay. He knew that Luke was a strong swimmer, but wondered if it
would matter in this kind off water, there was an obvious strong current.
Bo took a dep breath and wiped the tears from his eyes. He turned the car
around and speed back to the farm.
Luke struggled to keep his head above the
water, which he found was nearly impossible. The current kept dragging
him under the surface of the water. He managed to keep his head for a couple
minutes, he scanned his eyes along the bank of the ragging river to try
to get a bearing as to where he was. The river was wide, the flooding making
the bank even further away from Luke. Luke's mind spun frantically as he
tried to think of a way to get out of the river. He figured that his family
was probably looking for him. He thought that if he couldn't reach the
bank of the river that he should at least find something to hang on to.
He had tried to grab on to several small trees that had fallen into the
river during the storm, but each time he had been to far away, or the current
pulled him away at the last second. The current of the river acted like
an undertoe as it went around a sharp bend, Luke fought it to keep from
going under. A wave a water flooded into his mouth, he coughed and spit
out the water, and momentarily lost his concentration at stay above the
water, he felt his head slip under the deep waters of the river. He wasn't
sure how long he was under, he could feel his mind slipping into blackness
from the lack of oxygen. Finally the current subsided and Luke was able
to resurface. Luke inhaled deeply, filling his lungs with much needed oxygen.
He noticed another tree across the river, he prayed to himself that this
time he would be able to grab hold. Luke grabbed hold of one of the branches,
it felt slimy and extremely slippery. Luke tried to hold on tightly and
pull himself more out of the water, and on to the tree. He could feel the
current trying to pull him away from the tree. His wet clothing clung to
his body like a tight glove. He pulled himself slightly out of the ragging
river, he could feel his hands sliding on the slippery tree trunk. He felt
himself lose his hold on the tree and tumble back into the water, the current
immediately dragging him away. Luke felt his heart sink as the tree grew
further away, he had been so close, he wondered if he would ever get out
of this alive, then wondered if there was really anyone looking for him
or if they already figured he was dead. He allowed his mind to wander with
memories of the past as he was swept further down the river. Luke never
even noticed the large rock that was in river, and that the current was
pulling him towards it. Luke saw the rock at the last second before colliding
solidly against in. He heard a loud crack, and from the pain that raced
through his body he knew that he had broke at least one rib. Luke's mind
started to become alive with fear, his body was trembling with fear and
from cold. The current kept him pressed up against the large rock for a
moment, pressing hard on his broken ribs, he could feel pressing against
his lung. He moved his body in slow movements trying to relieve the pressure
from his ribs. The current caught him from a different angle and he started
to slid from under the rock. As he did his head struck the rock, with a
silent thunk. A small streak of blood flowed down the side of his head.
Luke felt darkness over take his mind as he slipped into unconsciousness.
Luke's limp body was carried further down the stream by the current.
Meanwhile, Bo arrived back at the farmhouse.
Daisy was outside feeding the chickens.
"Is there any orange paint left under all
that dirt?" Daisy asked jokingly.
Bo barely even looked. "Is Uncle Jesse inside?"
"Yeah he is." Daisy said, then noticed that
Luke wasn't with Bo. "Where's Luke?"
"Just c'mon inside and I'll tell you when
I tell Uncle Jesse." Bo said.
Daisy could tell from the tone of Bo's voice that something was, and
noticed for the first time how pale he looked. She followed him towards
the house.
"Are you okay?" Daisy asked.
Bo mumbled something in reply but Daisy couldn't make what exactly
what he said.
Jesse was working in the kitchen when Bo walked
in, he immediately noticed that Bo looked extremely upset.
"What's wrong Bo?" Jesse asked.
Daisy walked in behind Bo and closed the door.
"Where's Luke?" Jesse asked.
"I . . . I think y'all should sit down." Bo
said, sitting down at the kitchen table himself.
Jesse and Daisy both sat down and looked at Bo, waiting for him to
tell them what had happened. They wondered what could've happened that
had Bo so upset and if Luke was okay.
Bo told them about the car and how Luke went out to save the people
in the car and then how the rope had broke.
"I tried to pull him in . . . but the current
caused him to lose his hold on the rope or . . . something, and um . .
. he was swept down the river." Bo said his voice slightly trembling.
Jesse and Daisy looked at Bo their eyes wide, unable to believe what
Bo was saying. They both had tears in their eyes which they struggled to
hold back.
"Rosco said he'll help us look for Luke .
. . Luke is a strong swimmer he is probably fine. We'll find him in no
time and he'll be fine." Bo said.
"I am sure you're right, Luke is fine." Jesse
said, standing up from the table. "Now let's go find him."
Bo and Daisy nodded and stood up and followed Jesse outside.
"We should take the jeep, it'll go over rough
terrain better, if we have to." Daisy said.
They all got into the jeep and Bo speed back to where the river had
swept Luke away.
"This is where it happened." Bo said, images
of Luke being swept away flashed through his mind.
Rosco pulled up at that moment and climbed out of his patrol, he seemed
genuinely concerned for Luke's safety. They all set off in two teams of
two, Jesse and Rosco in one team and Bo and Daisy in another. They walked
along the swollen banks of the river, carrying long piece of rope they
could use when they found Luke. They slowly walked alongside the river
for several hours, until the sun began to fade, falling behind the horizon,
bringing dusk to the land. Filled with worry that Luke had not made it
out of the river alive, they met back at the cars, deciding to resume the
search the next morning. Rosco left, heading back to town in his patrol
car. The Dukes remained standing by the river for a little while longer.
Bo tried to hide his tears, he blamed himself for what happened and knew
he would never be able to get over the guilt if Luke turned up dead, or
never at all. Daisy went and got into her jeep. Jesse put a hand on Bo's
shoulder.
"C'mon Bo there is nothing more we can do
tonight, let's go back to the farm.
Bo bit back his tears and followed his uncle back over to the jeep.
They drove in silence back to the Duke farm house.
Luke's vision was blurry as he slowly opened
his eyes, and he couldn't see much of anything in the darken of the day.
His whole body cried out in pain, and dropped back down against the bank
of the river, intermoungst weeds and old tree roots. He had no idea where
he was or who he was. He called out for help but his voice was weak and
barely above a whisper. He heard the sound of footsteps approaching and
prayed whoever it was would find him.
An woman in her late fifties, knelt down beside
Luke, her eyes widened when she saw the young boy and she started to cry.
Luke could only faintly make out the woman who was knelt beside him, to
try to ask for her help, but himself to weak to talk and only managed to
mouth the word ‘Help' before he slipped back into unconsciousness. The
woman tried to wake Luke by gently shaking him, though her efforts were
in vain. She looked around frantically from same way to get him back to
her home, where she could tend to his injures. She stood up and brushed
the dirt from her hand off on her pants and back towards the house as fast
as she could. She came back moments later with a small trailer, that she
could pull by hand, that she often used from transporting things around
her land. It was completely dark by the time she managed to lift Luke onto
the trailer, even though she not weak as she lived alone, and did all the
work around her home and land, Luke was quite heavy, most of which was
from muscle.
Bo laid awake on his bed, staring over at
Luke's empty bed, unable to sleep. The room seemed to quiet and empty without
Luke, and reminded Bo of when Luke was in the Marines, the same feeling
of not knowing if his cousin was even still alive. Exhaustion eventually
took over his bad and he slipped into a restless sleep, haunted by a nightmare.

Bo found himself standing along the bank of the
river, the waters still raging, the river over flowing its banks. Dark
gray storm clouds gathered overhead and a light rain started to fall. The
rain was cold and Bo started to shiver, was the rain soaked through his
clothes. He heard a twig snap behind him and spun around to see who was
there, coming face to face with his cousin Luke. Luke was dripping wet.
"Luke I was afraid that we had lost you."
Bo said, his voice filled with relief, and a smile on his lips.
The smile faded when he noticed how pale Luke's skin was, and the bluish
tinge of his lips.
"I did drown. Because of you." Luke said,
his voice cold.
Bo shook his head. "No, it wasn't my fault . . . I did all that I could."
"No you didn't. You stood there and watched
as the currents in the river swept me away." Luke said.
Bo blinked back the tears that swelled in his eyes, his heart racing
wildly in his chest. He couldn't find the words to tell Luke was sorry,
he couldn't even find his voice to say anything. Without warning Luke shoved
Bo, causing Bo to stumble backwards and fall into the river. Bo tried to
call out for help, but was mouth was flooded with water causing him to
cough and choke. He was being swept backwards along the river, unable to
see what was coming, though able to see Luke's smiling face. He felt the
currents grab at him like a strong pair of hands, pulling him below the
water's surface, his lungs burning in a desperate need for air.

Bo woke up, sitting straight up on his bed. His
heart was racing and his breath coming in gasps, his whole body covered
with sweat. Bo took a deep breath, there seemed to be little air in the
room, even though the window was open and curtain was flapping in the breeze.
Bo climbed out the bed, knowing there would be no more sleep that night.
He walked quietly out to the kitchen, trying to be careful not to wake
Jesse and Daisy. He poured himself a tall glass of ice and went outside,
to sit on the porch swing. He sat listening the sounds of the night trying
to forget the images of his nightmare. He prayed that Luke was alright,
not knowing what he would do if he lost his older cousin, him and Luke
had always been very close and more like brothers then cousins.
Luke woke again as the first light of day
filtered through the window. Luke moved slightly, adjusting himself on
the bed, and moaned at the pain that flowed trough his body as he did.
His vision was blurry when he opened his eyes, he blinked a couple times
to clear his vision. Luke looked around at the unfamiliar surroundings
wondering where he was and how he got there, or for that matter who he
was. As hard as he tried to remember those things his mind was like a blackboard
that had been wiped clean. Luke heard the door creak, and turned to see
who was there. He saw an old lady, her grey hair pulled up into bun, her
face was old yet soft and caring looking.
"How are you feeling?" she asked.
"I feel like something the cat drug
in." Luke said. "Where am I?"
"Your home."
"Home? Where? And for that matter who
am I and just who are you?"
"You are home, just outside a town called
Hazzard, in the swamp country actually. I am Helen Dysan, you are my son
Jeramny." Helen said.
Luke looked at her with confused eyes. "I don't remember."
"I am sure you have been through a lot.
Before you father, Randy, past away he kept telling me that you were never
coming home. I refused to believe it. I was right, the god lord brought
you home to me. They wrong you were not killed during war." Helen said.
Luke sat up slightly on the bed and shook his head. "I don't remember
. . . I don't remember anything."
"I am sure you just need some rest and
a good old home cooked meal.
Perhaps later if we look at some photos you'll start to remember."
Helen said.
"Yeah I guess." Luke said.
"Now just lay back down Jeramny, and
get yourself a good rest. I start cooking up a nice home cooked meal for
you." Helen said.
Luke nodded and laid back down against the soft, old bed.
Helen walked out of the room and to
the kitchen, pausing by the picture of her son Jeramny. Jeramny looked
exactly like Luke, and would be able to pass for his identical twin. He
was dressed in a Marine outfit, Helen smiled at the picture, "I always
knew that you'd come to home to me."
Daisy woke up shortly after sunrise
and got ready to go to work, thinking working would help take her mind
off the matter at hand. She walked out on to the porch and was mildly surprised
to find Bo sitting on the porch swing.
"What are you doing out here?" Daisy
asked, sitting down next to her cousin.
"I couldn't sleep. I have been sitting
out here for the past few hours." Bo said.
"Why couldn't you sleep?" Daisy asked,
she felt as though she knew the answer but thought it wold be best for
Bo to get him to talk about it.
"The room was too quiet. Too empty,
without Luke there . . . it was like when he was gone to ‘Nam, the not
knowing if he is okay. When I did manage to fall asleep I had a dream .
. ." Bo said, his voice trailing off.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Daisy
asked.
Bo turned and looked at her, he didn't know if he could put the dream
he had into words, or if he could talk to her about it. He took a deep
breath and began to tell her about his dream.
"Oh Bo." Daisy said, gently placing
a hand on her younger cousin's shoulder. "I am sure that Luke is okay,
I'm sure we will find him today. Even if . . . even if we don't it is not
your fault. He wouldn't blame you. You did all you could."
"I didn't do enough. All I could was
stand there. Stand there and watch the river wash him away. I could've
done more . .. I just didn't know what to do, all I did was watch."
Daisy gave her cousin of hug. "It'll be okay Bo. I'm sure Luke is okay."
Bo returned her hug saying nothing. Daisy stood up and looked at Bo.
"I gotta get going to work now honey,
I promised to be there early to help with the inventory." Daisy said, a
gave Bo a small, kiss on the forehead, much the way a mother would kiss
her upset child. "Take care Bo."
Bo just nodded and watched as Daisy sped away from the farm in her
white jeep, Dixie.
A few minutes later Jesse walked out
on to the porch.
"Daisy already gone to work?' Jesse
asked.
Bo nodded. "Yeah she left a couple of minutes ago."
Jesse could tell from the look on Bo's face that he had got little,
or no sleep that night.
"I'll fix us up some breakfast and we
will tend to the animals and then go out and look some more for Luke."
Jesse said.
Bo didn't say anything as he got off the porch swing, he walked towards
the barn to start to tend to the animals. Jesse sighed as he watched Bo
walk to the barn, Bo seemed extremely depressed and Jesse wondered how
Bo would handle things if they never did find Luke. Jesse watched Bo walk
into the barn and then turned and went inside to start some breakfast.
He knew he had to try to hide his own grief for Bo's sake. He thought of
how close Bo and Luke were and knew that to Bo losing Luke would be to
lose a part of himself.
A few minutes later, after Bo had cleaned
up from attending to the animals, Bo and Jesse sat down at the kitchen
table to eat breakfast. After saying a prayer for Luke's safety and to
find him soon, they began to eat breakfast. Bo stared down at his plate
pushing the food around with his fork, not taking a single bite.
"Don't just sit there looking at it,
eat it." Jesse said, his voice was firm, but caring.
"I'm not hungry." Bo mumbled.
"Just eat something, it won't do no
good in finding Luke if you go starving yourself."
"I am not hungry."
"Bo . . ." Jesse said and sighed. "Please
just eat something."
Bo took a couple bites of food and then shoved his plate to one side.
Jesse shook his head, realizing that he wasn't going to be able to get
Bo to eat any more then that. Jesse finished his breakfast and then got
up from the table. Bo sat with his head hung down, his eyes closed, fighting
back the tears that burned in his eyes trying hard to remain brave. Jesse
walked over to Bo and put a hand on his young nephew's shoulder.
"C'mon Bo, let's go out and look some
more for Luke."
Bo nodded and got up from the table, following Jesse outside to the
pickup truck.
A couple of hours later, Helen walked back
into the room, carrying a tray of food, which she set down beside the bed.
She gently placed her hand on Luke's forehead to check for signs of fever,
smiling to feel there was none. Luke's eyes fluttered open and he looked
up at the woman, even though she told him that she was his mother she still
looked like a stranger to him.
"Good morning sleepy head." Helen said.
Luke said nothing and sat up on the bed.
"I made you some soup." Helen said, placing
the tray across Luke's lap.
Luke hungrily ate the soup, finding himself quite hungry.
"Have you remembered anything?" Helen asked.
Luke shook his head. "No ma'am."
"Maybe if you look at some old pictures, you'll
get your memory back."
Luke nodded. "Yeah that might help."
Helen left the room, coming back a couple moments later carrying to
photo albums.
Helen told him all about each picture but
none of them to spark any memory, his mind seemed to spin a million miles
a minute, yet going nowhere. Luke tried hard to remember something, the
smallest of part of his life as he looked at the pictures, but it was like
looking at a blank piece of paper.
"Do the pictures help any?" Helen asked.
Luke shook his head sadly. "No. I still can't remember anything."
"Nothing at all?"
Luke thought about it for a moment, then asked, "Do I have a brother?"
"No. You are an only child. Why do you ask?"
Luke shrugged, not quite sure to put into words why he felt as though
he had a brother. "I don't know . . . I just had this feeling that I had
a brother. I can almost see him too . . . but it is like he is in a haze
and so very far away."
"Perhaps it is just a friend from when you
were off at war. Perhaps you had a good friend who you thought of as a
brother." Helen said.
"Yeah, that must be it." Luke said, though
a part of him was sceptical of her answer.
"Is there anything else you remember?" Helen
asked.
Luke glanced at a photo, of Jeramny in a Marine outfit. "This kinda
looks familiar."
"That was take right before you left. Do you
remember anything about that?"
"Not really. Some vague images of fighting
but it is more like I am watching a movie and the picture ain't tunned
in, then it being a memory." Luke said.
Helen sighed softly. "Perhaps in time you will start to remember more.
You probably just need more rest and time to heal before you memory returns."
Luke nodded and laid back down. "Yeah I am sure I'll remember again
in no time."
Helen watched Luke, until he seemed to have fallen back asleep and
then left the room. As Luke drifted off to sleep he wondered about the
person he felt as though was his brother, wondering who he was and where
he was, thinking perhaps that he could help him remember about his life.
Bo and Jesse searched along the river for
several hours. Jesse had to force Bo to take a break for a while. Jesse
could tell that Bo's lack of sleep was catching up with him, and knew that
Bo couldn't keep going like he was. At around four that afternoon, they
reached where the river opens to the swamp. The two of them stood at the
edge of the water, Bo scan the swamp, desperate to find some sign of Luke,
though there was none. With tear filled eyes Jesse put a hand on Bo's shoulder,
trying hard to find the words to express what he was feeling.
"Since we didn't find Luke anywhere along
the river that means that he must have been swept into the swamp . . .
I am afraid that it means only one thing . . . we have lost Luke." Jesse
said.
Bo turned and looked at his uncle, his dark blue eyes shinning with
tears. "No. Maybe he climbed out of the river . . . maybe he is on the
other side."
Jesse shook his head sadly. "I'm afraid it is over Bo."
"Maybe someone else found him and . . . just
. . ." Bo said, not able to find the words, his mind refusing to believe
that Luke was gone.
"Bo, you know that is not very likely, we
have searched everywhere, Luke must have been swept into the swamp. With
all the gators and cotton mouths in there Luke couldn't . . ." Jesse started
to say, his sentence being cut short by Bo.
"Luke could survive . . . he did. Luke is
strong he walked away from Nam with hardly a single scratch he can't be
killed by some river or some dang swamp. Someone else probably found him
and is helping him get better . . . they just don't know who he is." Bo
said.
"It's over Bo, Luke is gone." Jesse said,
finding it hard to old back his own tears, to hide his own grief.
Bo shook his head. "NO! I can ask around someone has to have found
him."
"Bo." Jesse said and then sighed, he knew
there was no way that Bo was going to accept so quickly that his older
cousin was gone. He knew how hard it was accept the loss of loved ones
as he had lost so much of his family, and it pained him to have lost his
older nephew.
Bo turned away from his uncle and watched the water of the river as
it flooded into the swamp, the memory of Luke being swept away by those
same water washed over him. A couple tears slid down his cheeks, and his
body trembled as he fought to hold them back.
"Luke can't be gone." Bo said softly, almost
more to himself.
"He is though Bo. I know how much it hurts
Bo, you just have to let go." Jesse said.
Bo turned back to face Jesse, his pain apparent on his face, his lips
moved soundless as he tried to find the words to express his pain, though
none came. Jesse pulled Bo into a hug, to comfort his young nephew. Bo
rest his head on his uncle's shoulder and allowed himself to cry for the
loss of his older cousin, his best friend, his brother. Jesse softly hushed
Bo, completely understanding his pain, though he hid his own, determined
to remain strong for his family. Once Bo felt he had no tears left to cry
he pulled away from his uncle, and glanced back at the water, wanting to
do nothing more then to throw himself into the churning waters and to allow
their wrath to take his life the same way that they had taken Luke's, though
he knew that would accomplish anything but to cause his family more grief.
Bo felt Jesse's hand on his arm and looked up at his uncle.
"C'mon on let's go home Bo." Jesse said softly.
Bo nodded his head and followed Jesse back to the pickup truck.
Bo and Jesse arrived back at the Duke farm
only minutes before Daisy. She felt a knot tighten in her stomach when
she walked into the front room. Bo looked up when he heard he walk in,
she saw that his face was pale and his eyes appear haunted.
Daisy swallowed hard. "Did you find Luke?"
Jesse shook his head. "No. We searched all the way to the river runs
into the swamp, I am afraid that we have lost Luke."
Daisy paled and her legs suddenly felt weak, she walked over to the
couch and sat down next to Bo.
"Are . . . are you sure?" Daisy asked, fighting
back the tears that had started to build in her eyes.
"Yes. Luke is gone." Jesse said.
Daisy felt her tears start to slide down her cheeks, finding it hard
to believe that Luke was really gone. Jesse walked over to the couch and
put a gentle hand on Daisy's shoulder.
"It'll be okay girl." Jesse said, and gave
her a hug, soothing her tears.
"It's my fault." Bo mumbled.
Daisy looked at Bo. "No it is not. It ain't your fault."
"Yes it is. I was there. If it had been the
other way around Luke would've done more . . . he wouldn't have let me
die." Bo said, not even looking over at Daisy or Jesse.
"You did all you could Bo. You didn't let
Luke die. I don't think he'd want you to be blaming yourself either." Jesse
said.
"I don't care. You think that's gonna make
the guilt go away?"
Jesse put a hand on Bo's shoulder and Bo pulled away.
"Nothing can change the fact that I stood
there and watched him get swept away, nothing will make the guilt go away."
Bo said.
"And blaming yourself won't bring him back."
Jesse said.
"I KNOW that. I know Luke is gone, he is dead
and it is MY fault."Bo said, and broke down crying again, the pain of grief
and feelings of guilt too much from him to handle.
"It's okay Bo." Daisy said softly, and pulled
him into a comforting hug, hushing with wordless sounds, then broke down
crying herself. Jesse pulled the both of them into a hug, they were now
all he had left in world.
Luke opened his eyes and propped himself up
against the pillows, he still felt stiff and sore and tried to remember
what had happened to cause the pain. Helen walked into the room a couple
moments after Luke had woke up and tended to the wounds.
"What happened to me?" Luke asked.
"What do you mean?" Helen asked.
"I mean to cause all these injuries."
"I don't really know, I found out on the edge
of the swamp." Helen said.
"How did I get there?" Luke asked.
"It doesn't really matter all that matters
is that you came home to me." Helen said.
"I guess . . . I just thought if I knew .
. . I might start to remember." Luke said.
"You'll start to remember again in time. You
just need to rest and heal." Helen said.
"I am not tired. I feel like I've been sleeping
forever." Luke said.
"You have to just relax, so you can heal and
start to remember." Helen said.
"Perhaps if you told me more about yourself."
Luke said, although nothing she had said before sparked any memory he thought
it was worth a try.
Helen nodded and sat down on a chair next to Luke's bed. She folded
her hands and placed them on her lap and started to tell him more about
his life, or rather Jeramny's life.
Jesse called around to all the friends of
the family to tell them the sad news that Luke was gone and that he was
holding a wake tomorrow for Luke. Everyone gave their condolences and offered
to help in any way they could, saying they would come to the wake the next
day. Daisy stood near a window looking outside at the yard, watching
Bo, wash the General, trying to remove every last speck of dust from the
car, as though trying to make it shine like new. Jesse hung up the phone,
after making the last call, and Daisy walked over to him.
"Uncle Jesse, do you think that Bo is okay?
I mean he has been washing the General for the almost an hour. Maybe we
should go out there and make him stop."
"Just let him be Daisy. He has to deal with
his grief in his own way. This is very hard on Bo, he and Luke were very
close, and no matter what we say Bo will continue to feel guilty about
what happened until he realizes there was nothing he could've done." Jesse
said.
Daisy nodded, understanding what Jesse was saying, though wishing there
was something she could do or say to ease Bo's pain. Daisy went outside
and sat on the porch swing, her heart still aching with grief for the loss
of her older cousin.
About twenty minutes later Cooter, who had
been in Atlanta the past couple days, pulled up in front of the Duke farmhouse,
in his brown Jeep Grand Wagoner. Daisy went off the porch to greet him.
Cooter's normally carefree face was drawn with sadness at the loss of one
his closest friends. Cooter gave Daisy a quick hug.
"How you doing?" Cooter asked.
"As well as can be excepted I guess." Daisy
said and glanced over at Bo. "Better then Bo."
Cooter glanced over at Bo, who was still washing the General, even
from this distant he could see the sadness in Bo's eyes and could tell
that Bo was taking Luke's death quite hard. Bo didn't even look up or acknowledge
Cooter's presence, it was as though he was lost in his own world.
Daisy and Cooter went into the house. Jesse,
who was sitting on the couch, wiped the tears from his eyes.
"I am really sorry to hear about what happened
to Luke. If there is ever anything I can do to help just ask uncle Jesse."
Cooter said. "What exactly happened that day?"
Jesse motioned for Cooter to sit down and then told him about everything
that happened to Luke.
"That's awful. No wonder Bo seems so upset."
Cooter said.
Jesse nodded. "He won't listen that it is not his fault. He is just
going to have to come to terms with what happened." Jesse said, thinking
the only one that always knew exactly what to say to Bo was Luke, though
Luke was now gone and that was the whole problem.
After the three of them had visited for nearly
ten minutes Bo came into the house. He walked through the front room, acting
as though he didn't even see anyone there.
"Bo, aren't you going to stay out here and
visit for a bit?" Jesse asked.
Bo looked up, seeming almost startled by Jesse asking question as though
he had been lost in his own thought. "No sir. I think I am just going to
go to bed early. I didn't get much sleep last night after all."
"Maybe you should wait until after dinner."
Jesse said.
"I ain't that hungry right now." Bo said and
ended any further discussion by leaving the room and going to his bedroom.
Cooter left after they ate a light dinner and said that he would be
back for Luke's wake the next day. Daisy decided to emerse herself in work
and returned to the Boar's Nest for the late shift. Everyone that was there
had all heard about what happened to Luke and gave her their condolences.
She had to go into the back room a couple of times when she started crying.
Jesse walked through the darkened, quiet old
house, all the life that used to flow through it seemed to have been drained.
He quietly opened the door to Bo's room, and looked in at his sleeping
nephew. Bo appeared to be in a deep sleep, even in sleep his face reflected
his sadness and grief. In the pale moonlight that flooded the room, Jesse
could see dried tears staining Bo's face. Bo's right hand was grasped tightly
around the blanket that covered him, his fist so tight his knuckles were
white, and Jesse wondered if Bo was having another bad dream about what
had happened to Luke. Jesse walked into his own room and sat on his own
bed, looking through a photo album off old pictures, remembering better
times. He felt tears forming in his eyes and allowed himself to cry, for
almost the first time. He didn't worry about anyone seeing him crying,
or to see how much he was hurting, there was nobody around to put on a
brave front for. He eventually just cried himself to sleep.
Bo got a couple hours of sleep, when his sleep
was interrupted by nightmare, similar to the one he had the night before.
He climbed out of bed and walked quietly out to the kitchen. His stomach
growled hungrily, and he rummaged to the fridge, finding leftovers from
dinner. Bo ate at the food slowly, even though he was hungry he still didn't
feel much like eating. Daisy arrived home a short time later, and was surprised
to see Bo sitting at the table eating.
"Couldn't sleep again?"
Bo shook his head. "At least I got more sleep them last night."
Daisy found that she really didn't know what else to say. "Maybe you
should just try to get more sleep."
"There is no use in trying I know I ain't
gonna get anymore sleep tonight." Bo said.
Daisy gave Bo a hug from behind, and rested her arms on Bo's shoulders
for moment. Unable to find the words to ease his pain or to stop his feelings
of guilt, she gave him a soft kiss on the cheek and went to bed, leaving
Bo alone in the darkness.
The next day seemed to pass slowly, most everyone
in Hazzard came to pay their respects, even Boss Hogg and Rosco came to
convey their sympathies and condolences. Bo say quietly beside the fireplace,
not wanting to be reminded by everyone that his cousin was dead. Each time
someone walked over and told him how sorry they were that Luke was dead,
Bo's pain seemed to grow. After all what did they have to be sorry for,
the whole thing had nothing to do with them and it was not their fault
that Luke had been killed, it was his fault, his fault that the person
he was closest to in the world was gone. Bo felt as though his life was
now empty like something inside of him had died along with Luke. Bo wanted
to run out of the room to stop hearing the constant reminder that Luke
was dead, after all it was already something he would never forget, the
grief and guilt all seemed too much and he was sure he would scream at
any moment if everyone didn't just leave him alone. He no longer had any
tears left to cry, and seemed to just sit and stare blankly at the fire,
that burned in the fireplace. After many longer hours the day was over.
Bo sat nibbling at a piece of apple pie that one of the neighbours had
brought to the wake.
A few days later Luke had started to recover
from his injures and was able to be up and walk around for short periods
of time. His memory was still very foggy and for the most part nonexistent.
The more he tried to remember the more exhausted he felt, nothing gave
him any clues to his past. Helen told him to just relax and things would
come to him, though he couldn't do that, he couldn't live not knowing who
he was, not knowing anything about himself. Even though Helen said he was
home, a part of Luke felt that wasn't true, something didn't seem just
right, there was too much of an empty feeling, other then his lack of memory.
He felt lost and scared, but he put on a brave front whenever Helen was
around. He sometimes called her by her first name and she reminded him
repeatedly that she was his mom and to call her mother, Luke did though
it didn't really feel right, even his own name didn't sound right to him.
He kept telling himself that it was just the amnesia that was causing these
feelings and told himself to stop being so silly and to just be glad to
be back to his normal life.
Weeks passed slowly at the Duke farm, the
loss of Luke seemed to cast a dark cloud over the farm. Bo became withdrawn
and quiet, he barely slept or ate, and his eyes always looked haunted.
Jesse knew that Bo still had not let go of his guilt and that it was starting
to tear him apart, it pained Jesse to know that there was nothing he could
do for his young nephew. It was exactly one month after Luke's death that
Bo got into the General for the first time again. He had spent many hours
washing and waxing it, though never drove it. Jesse walked over to the
car.
"Where are you going?" Jesse asked.
"To the swamp." Bo said, there was a deep
sadness to his voice.
"Why?" Jesse asked, thinking that was the
last place Bo would want to be going.
"To see if I can find something of Luke's
. . . just something to finalize everything just . . ." Bo said his voice
trailing off, not able to find the words.
Even though Bo didn't say it Jesse understood, he nodded his head.
"Just be back before it gets dark, okay?"
"Yes sir." Bo said.
Jesse stood and watched as Bo sped away from the farm.
The General seemed to quiet without Luke,
they had always gone everywhere together and Luke's absence made the car
seemed entirely too empty. Bo sped along the winding dirt roads, at times
feeling as though he could still feel Luke's presence in the car with him.
Bo reached the "Jumping Off Point" and rented a small motor boat and set
off into the depths of the swamp. Bo looked along the edges of weeds, hopefully
to find something that had belong to Luke. His stomach seemed to tie in
knots as the boat moved slowly across the water, the memory of Luke being
swept away still haunted his mind. He tried hard to push those images aside
and to focus on what he was doing. After a couple of hours he began to
think it would be a thankless task, though he no longer felt haunted by
what had, instead the swamp seemed to be offering some kind of peace. Bo
was just about to give up when something caught his eye. He moved to boat
to the bank of the swamp, and tore a piece of blue plaid material from
a tangle of roots. Bo held it in his hand for moment, and knew it was from
Luke's shirt, he slipped it into his pocket. Bo glanced up and through
the thick of the trees he could see a small house, with smoke billowing
from the chimney.
‘Perhaps they found Luke,. maybe Luke didn't go to a watery grave,
maybe he is even still alive.' Bo thought to himself, his thoughts spinning
at a mile a minute. Bo tied the boat to the rickety old dock, that was
two feet to the left of the tangle of roots, and began to walk towards
the house.
"Hold it right there, your trespassing on
private property."
Bo stopped walking, he knew that voice all to well it sounded just
like Luke. Bo turned around and saw Luke standing there, wearing a pair
of dark brown pants, a blue shirt and a dark hunter green jacket, he also
noticed the shotgun that Luke was pointing at him.
"Luke, we all thought that you were dead."
Bo said.
"What are you talking about?" Luke said. "You
must have me mistaken for someone else my name is not Luke, it is Jeramny
Dysan."
Bo shook his head. "No it ain't. Your name is Luke Duke."
"Look I don't know what kinda scam you are
trying to pull but if you don't get off our property in thirty seconds
you are going to be finding a bullet in ya." Luke said, aiming the gun
directly at Luke.
"Luke, please put the gun down cousin. I know
you don't really want to shoot me." Bo said.
"I don't even know you, why would I care if
I shot you?"
Bo realized that Luke was suffering from amnesia, he had been just
so glad to see Luke alive at first that he hadn't noticed right away.
"You have amnesia." Bo said.
Luke looked puzzled, how did this stranger know about his amnesia,
he wondered what kind of trick this person was pulling. Bo took a careful
step towards Luke, not wanting to give him any reason to pull the trigger.
"Just put the gun down before someone gets
hurt." Bo said.
"Your the only one that's gonna get hurt if
you don't get outta here right now." Luke said.
"Luke, just listen to me okay?"
"I told you before my name is not Luke it
is Jeramny." Luke said and charge towards Bo.
Luke knocked Bo to the ground, and placed the barrel of the gun to
Bo's head. He looked down at the younger man, expecting to see fear in
his eyes, though he saw none.
"Luke put the gun down before you do something
that you'll regret." Bo said.
"Why do you keep calling me Luke?"
"Because that is your name. You are Luke Duke,
you are my cousin, my best friend and my brother." Bo said.
Luke lowered the gun and just stood there looking at Bo. ‘Could this
really be the person I sensed before, the brother I sensed?' Luke wondered
to himself, even though it seemed to provide no more answers then anything
else had.
"And who are you?"
"I'm Bo."
Luke took a couple steps backwards, feeling totally confused, nothing
seemed to make any sense. Luke dropped the gun and started to walk away
from Bo.
"Luke wait." Bo called out, running after
his older cousin.
Luke stopped and turned to face Bo, who stood a few feet away.
"How am I suppose to know that what you are
saying is true?"
"You just have to believe me. You know that
I have never lied to you before and that I never would." Bo said.
Luke thought about it for a moment and was just going to respond when
Helen interrupted him.
"Get off my land. I will not allow you to
steal my son from me." Helen said, she had picked up the shotgun and walked
over beside Luke.
"He is not your son. He is my cousin." Bo
said.
"Enough lies. Yo are nothing more then a blonde
demon come to steal my baby away from me again. You are like the ones responsible
for keeping my Jeramny from me all these years." Helen said coldly.
"That is no true." Bo said.
"Leave here and never return and I will spare
you." Helen said.
"I ain't leaving here without my cousin."
Bo said.
"I will not allow you to steal my son." Helen
said lowering the gun at Bo.
Luke stood watching with a muddled kind of confusion nothing seemed
to make sense. His heart started to race as Helen prepared to pull the
trigger to shoot Bo, everything came crashing back.
"NO!" Luke yelled, shoving Helen to one side,
just as her finger closed around the trigger.
Bo could hear the bullet as it sped past him, and became embedded in
a nearby tree. Luke looked at his younger cousin and gave a sigh of relief
to see that he was okay. Luke practically ran over to Bo.
"Are you okay cousin?" Luke asked.
Bo nodded. "Yeah thanks. Are you okay?"
Luke nodded. "Better now."
Bo bit back the tears that burned in his eyes, and gave his cousin
a large brotherly hug.
"It's good to have you back cuz." Bo said.
"It's goo to be back." Luke said returning
Bo hug.
Helen stood up and watched the exchange between the two cousin's with
a pained heart, still believing that Luke was her son.
"No. You can't have him he is my son." Helen
said.
Luke remembered everything that had happened, and in a way felt sorry
for Helen, even though she had tried to kill Bo, she had lost her only
son and the pain was too much. Helen walked over to them.
"Get away from him. I am your family." Helen
said.
"I am sorry but I am not who you think I am."
Luke said.
"He has poisoned your mind, he is making you
believe his lies." Helen said.
"No he hasn't. I finally have my memory back,
I am not your son."
Helen stood there her rage intensifying, hating this young stranger
for turning her son against her.
"Look ma'am, he is not you son. He is my cousin
Luke. I know how much it hurts to lose someone that you love. It dang near
tore my heart in two when I thought Luke was dead. I realize that you mistook
Luke for your son, thinking that after so many years he came back to you.
I don't blame you for that, I understand and sympathise with your pain,
but you have to accept the truth." Bo said.
Helen looked at Luke for a moment and then started to cry. "I am sorry,
I thought that you were my son."
"It's okay, no harm has been done. All I want
to do now is go home." Luke said.
Helen nodded and turned and walked into the house, not wanting to see
Luke leave, feeling as though she was losing her son all over again. Bo
and Luke walked down the boat.
"I'm sorry Luke." Bo said.
"For what?"
"It's my fault this whole mess happened."
Bo said.
"No it ain't. Where'd you get a fool idea
like that?"
"I didn't do enough save you . . . I could've
done more. All I did was stand there and watch as the river swept you away."
Bo said.
Luke shook his head. "There was nothing else you could've done."
Bo bit back the tears that burned in his eyes, not wanting Luke to
see him cry, they were more tears of joy and relief to have his cousin
back again.
"It is just so good to have you back. I have
missed you so much. We all thought . . . we thought that you were dead."
Bo said.
"Well I ain't. You can't get rid of me that
easy cousin." Luke said and laughed.
Bo smiled, though he found no humour in Luke's statement. "I am serious."
"And so am I." Luke said. "I remember about
everything that happened and even remember all about my amnesia. One thing
I knew was that there was something missing here, I felt as though I had
should have a brother. I started to see that was true when you showed up
here." Luke said.
Bo turned and looked at Luke, and smiled. Luke saw the tears in Bo's
eyes. He didn't tease Bo about the tears, he completely understood how
Bo must have felt thinking he was dead, knowing how he would feel if the
situation was the other way around. Luke instead just gave Bo a big brotherly
hug. Then the two of them got into the boat, and sped back to where Bo
had left the General, and Luke drove home.
Daisy had just got home by the time the boys
pulled to a stop in front of the house. Bo stood in the doorway of the
kitchen, and Luke stood behind him, so that they could surprise Jesse and
Daisy with the good news. Jesse set the newspaper, he had been reading
down, and looked up at Bo.
"Did you find anything?" Jesse asked.
"Yeah, one thing."
Daisy looked over at Bo with questioning eyes, both Jesse and Daisy
noticed something different about Bo, his dark blue eyes no longer looked
haunted, they wondered what Bo had found to cause this reaction, though
they didn't figure that Luke was alive, they just thought it was something
special.
"Uncle Jesse, I know how you feel about any
of dragging home strays but . . ." Bo started to say and Luke gave Bo a
friendly punch in the back the shoulder. "I think you'll be willing to
change your mind this time."
"And what did you drag home?" Jesse asked.
Bo turned slightly, and then Luke stepped into the doorway.
"So can we keep him?" Bo asked, laughing.
Daisy was the first to her feet, she ran over and gave Luke a big hug,
followed shortly by Jesse.
"What . . . how?" Jesse asked, feeling at
a loss for words.
"It's a really long story." Luke said. "Let's
go into the other room and talk about it."
Luke told them all about everything that happened. After Jesse called
Dr. Appleby to come have a look at Luke, to be sure all his injures were
healing properly. Word that Luke was alive quickly spread through Hazzard
and there was a welcome home party at the Boar's Nest for him. A week later
Bo and Luke heard that Helen Dysan had passed away one night her sleep,
doctor's said she had a heart attack while she slept, passing away in her
sleep. Luke felt bad for her, and was grateful that she had saved his life,
though he knew that she could be with her real son. The first day of the
second week, after Luke got home, Rosco gave the boys and illegal parking
ticket, things were back to normal in Hazzard County.
