Tromsø my home city ( in Norwegian )
On the map you`ll find Tromsø 400kms north of the Artic Circle. Tromsø has 60 000 inhabitans, and is situated between high mountains. In the summer the midnight sun makes the night as light as the day. The climate in Tromsø is pleasant due to the passing Gulf-stream. In the summer the temperature can rise beyond 20 degrees Celsius.
In 1794 Tromsø was granted marked town privileges.
However, we know that Tromsø was mentioned as early as around 1200.
It is said that Christianity did not arrive in Tromsø until 1250.
The mild climate in North Norway can be explained by the warm ocean currents along the coast. The Gulf Stream is the most famous of them.
Precipitation provides a considerable source of heat. Radiation, the heat given off by the ocean and lands, as well as the ice in the Artic determine the climate here.
The winter in Tromsø is long. The first snow often comes around October - November, and it stays on til April-Mai.
New Year`s Eve, Sun celebration Day 21 January, Constitutional Day 17 May, Midsummer Eve 23 June and Advent With Cristmas Eve.
These are events which people have made into festivity days, based on local traditions. New Year`s Eve has always been special.
The sun is at its lowest point, now coming closer to the horizon each day, and this calls for a celebration, and the new year must be welcomed as well.
At home, families and friends celebrate. Young people fill the streets. Everybody toasts everybody.
On 21 January the sun again rises above the horizon. Towards noon everyone looks with anticipation to the south towards the mountains of the Malangen.
At Midsummer, five months later, the sun is at its highest, and will begin descending again. Midsummer Eve is also celebrated. When Advent begins, Christmas lights are illuminated in the streets of the city.
An impressive element in the Polar Night which gives you the feeling of Christmas.
This is a Tromsø palm. It was my great great great grandmother Nanna Sabine Klærk that came with the Tromsø palm. She had the seeds from Alta ( a place futher north ). The reason it is called Tromsø palm instead of Alta palm is that it’s no other place in the world where it grows so fast. In Alta it was too dry for the plant to like it very much, but in Tromsø there is more moist. And the Tromsø palm like it moist. Not many people like the palm because if you plant it in your garden you will have at least 5 new palms the next summer.
