Charlie is shocked when a few weeks before his wedding an old girlfriend (Sara Mornell) shows up with what she claims is his son. Bailey meets a great girl but still isn't ready for a relationship. Julia finds herself a little jealous when she discovers Griffin has a girlfriend. Claudia prepares to begin jr. high.

Bailey joins Will on his visit to a university and decides college is his escape from his troubled life. Julia and Justin stage a protest against a new school rule prohibiting kissing, but by the end it's not Justin who has her attention. Charlie and Kirsten's engagement is in question when Charlie's attachment to Spencer brings up the issue of Kirsten's infertility. Claudia buys a bra and gives herself an instant figure in an attempt to fit in at Junior high.

Bailey seriously injures another football player during practice and his feelings of guilt keep him from being able to play. Joe has a mild heart attack and has to change his lifestyle, so Charlie takes over the day to day management of Salinger's. Julia and Griffin's relationship begins to heat up and Julia thinks that Griffin will expect a sexual relationship -- something for which she is not prepared. But, Griffin tells Julia that he does not want to be her "first" since she will surely make a big deal out of it, and he is "not into big deals."

Kirsten is a little perplexed when a fortune teller tells her that the name of the man she will marry is "Rob," not Charlie. Bailey and Sarah start to date but Sarah realizes that Bailey is not over Jill yet, and that until he is, their relationship will never work; and, Julia tries to take care of Griffin by getting him a job at Salinger's after he is fired from the bike store, but Griffin resents the intrusion.

With useless honeymoon tickets in hand, Charlie takes Claudia for an escape to Mexico, hoping to repair their relationship. In her anger, Claudia avoids her brother and seeks solace in her new friend, Enrico. Meanwhile, Charlie falls for a beautiful, free-spirited woman. He thinks he's falling in love with her until she makes him realize he's just confused about Kirsten. He returns home to find Kirsten packing her boxes. Julia is determined to avoid both Justin and sex, but the two of them quickly succumb to this new and exciting discovery. They agree to a completely physical relationship until they realize that casual sex is harder than they thought. After agreeing to cut off their relationship completely, they end up slowly rebuilding their emotional relationship. Reunited with Sarah, Bailey is eager to spend time with her, but she is more hesitant and less trusting of him. Sarah's visiting grandmother lets slip that she's adopted and she comes to Bailey for emotional support.

Julia's favorite teacher touches her in an uncomfortable way, and she is left agonizing over whether she is to blame. She decides to file charges after discovering that others had similar experiences. Sarah is on a spending spree, abusing her parents' generosity in the aftermath of being told that she's adopted. Bailey is uncomfortable with Sarah's lavish spending, and tries to clarify to her the difference between money and love. In trying to fit in with the single crowd at work, Charlie tries to show off his young and wild side. He misinterprets signals from a waitress, Shelley, and agressively makes a pass at her. When Shelley rejects him, Charlie fires her. Charlie realizes he is wrong after dealing with Julia's situation. Claudia continues down the bad girl path under the influence of new friend Jody. Charlie finally takes notice when Claudia gets sick on Scotch, but his intervention isn't enough to keep her from her pranks.

Also, Claudia gets the cast off her arm and is reluctant to start playing the violin again. And, Charlie and Kirsten begin to see each other again.

Charlie is supportive to whatever Julia wants, Bailey wants to beat up Justin, and Claudia is just totally confused. Bailey and Sarah are both ready to become sexually active. Without much convincing needed from Bailey, Sarah tries to make the event beyond compare. Julia's news interrupts their plans and they resign themselves to abstinence. Claudia's violin gets water-damaged in the basement but Jake is able to fix it. Justin, feeling alone and depressed, wants to help julia, but no one will let him. Julia ends up having a miscarriage.

Joe comes back into town and confronts Charlie about a notice of sale that he has received for Salingers and Charlie tries to cover up what he really knows about Kathleen's revenge against him and the restaurant. Bailey is obsessed with Sarah's safety after she and a band member are mugged. Julia and Justin seem to be drifting further and further apart. Claudia attends her first make-out party. And Charlie, in his desperation to find something good in his life, goes to see if he can reconcile with Kirsten.
Sarah and Bailey realize that unless they can come to some understanding in their relationship perhaps the best thing for them both would be a separation. Julia and Justin are at a loss of how to save their relationship from crumbling -- especially when they both admit to having had an affair. Charlie is desperate to find a way to save Salingers and calls Jake hoping that he can help. Also, Charlie puts all his feelings on the line to convince Kirsten that he truly does love her and want her back.
