Rena Owen is a very well known actress in her native land of New Zealand.  Born in 1960 in the town of Kawakawa, Bay of Islands, New Zealand to a Maori father and a pakeha (white) mother, Rena was the middle of nine children.  She wrote and starred in Te Awa I Tahutu, and has continued to write, act and direct.  Now living in Auckland, Rena has worked extensively as an actor in theatre and television.  Her experience in entertainment began when she was a child, performing traditional Maori singing and dancing.  Through her participation in the college Maori cultural group, she gained roles in college productions such as Bloody Mary in South Pacific. She also performed in church and community plays, but pursued a nursing career (!!!!!!!) after college.  Her biggest role to date was playing Beth Heke in the powerful movie Once Were Warriors.   Among her awards are the Best Actress Award at the Montreal Film Festival, for Once Were Warriors.
