The Storm

By: Shawna

Thunder rolled and lighting flashed...Alex cuddled up in bed, pulling the covers up to her face..She could hear the rain and hail pounding against the windows, and the wind rattled the glass..Maybe reading would help, she thought..Reaching for a love story, she turns on the lamp next to the bed..After reading only a few paragraphes, and many glances out the window, the lamp goes out..

"Oh great..No power..That's all I need." She mumblers laying the book down, and cuddling a power next to her..

"Walker, where are you?" she woundered..

The screen door banged shut downstairs followed by a flash of lighting and clap of thunder..

Was that Walker? Or just the wind... She hadn't heard the RAM, so had to be the wind..

"Walker?" Alex slowly peeked from under the covers...

"Nothing..

Everything got quite..Did the storm go away? Was it finally over? Ever so slowly Alex carefuly removed the covers and climbed to her feet..Nothing..

"Walker?"

All she heard was the rain drops and hail on the window..The wind howled around the cracks..

Slowly she moved toward the steps..

"BOOM!!" Thunder roared as lighting hit the tree limb outside the window..

Alex screamed and ran back to bed, jumping under the covers..

"Oh, Walker, where are you?" She whispered, still trembling

"Alex? You ok?"

"Walker?"

She peeked out from under the covers, not certain it was safe yet...

"I heard you scream..Is everything ok?"

Forgetting about the storm for a minute, she ran over to her husband..

"Oh, Walker..I was so scared.."

Holding her against his strong chest, he stroked her hair..

"Shhh, it's ok.. There's nothing to be afraid of. It's not going to get you.."

The storm was quite.

"Walker? You're soaken wet..What happened?" She asked, pulling back and looking at her cowboy..

He was shivering with cold, and water dripped from his hair and face..

Even though his clothes were soaked with cold rain, she felt warm and safe in his strong, loving arms.

"The truck slid off the road...It was raining so hard, I couldn't see. I knew you would be worried because I was late getting home, and I coudn't get a call though to you.. It's about a mile up the road. I'll call a tow truck for it tomorrow."

Stepping back, Alex started to unbutton his shirt...

"Walker...YOu gotta get out of these wet clothes.."

"Yeah.." He looked into her eyes...

"Your night shirt is pretty wet now too.." He gently touched the gown, where he brest were showing though...

"Guess your right.." She shivered for a minute..

Thunder claped again.. Alex let out another scream and threw herself back into Walker's arms...

"Shh..There now.. It's ok.."

He gently led her over to the bed.

She slid off her night shirt as he finished undressing..

Thunder clapped again and a tree branch rattled against the ranch..

"Walker?" Alex was hidding her face under the covers..

Her husband climbed into bed, not even bothering to find underwear to sleep in..

"Alex, what's the matter? Why are you so scared of storms?"

"When I was a child, my best friend and I were down by the lake..We didn't notice the storm coming up. By the time it got there, it was too late. We ran for cover, but lighting bounced off the lake and killed her, right in front of me. I've been terrifed of storms ever since then."

"Oh, honey, I am sorry.." Alex laid her head on his strong chest as he pulled her closer to him..

"Lighting can't hurt you unless it's right here.." he began..

"Really?"

"Uh huh.."

"How do you tell when it's here?" she asked..

"Well...When you see a flash of lighting, count how many seconds it is until you hear the thunder..that is how many miles away the storm is.."

"And if the lighting and thunder are right together..then the storms here..?"

"Yep."

A flash of lighting streaked across the sky...Alex counted the seconds..

"Four she said."

"Yeah..It's four miles away.. It's moving out of here."

"You know.." Walker turned slightly, pulling Alex on top of him.."I know how to make you forget all about the storm.."

"You do?"

"Yep..Here, let me show you..."

"Oh! I think I am already frogetting." she moaned.
