Something we will never hear on the broadcast version of Rising Star (but wish we could)
Jason's Lines from Rising Star
Convention Reports
by Debra Ballard (evenstar@hpnc.com), Jenna Mead (jrmead@swbell.net),and Sara Price (dsprice@ix.netcom.com) I flew in from Dallas and met up with two other members of JasonCarter's fan club: Jenna Mead, who flew in from Kansas City, and Sara Price who drove from Memphis. We met some of the dealers and 2/3 of Slanted Fedora, the con organizers. We had a great time visiting and hearing about the different celebrities they've worked with. Wearing our JCFC buttons, they had no doubt as to who we had come to see--of course our numerous emails before the con probably clued them in too! Saturday morning, the guys from Slanted Fedora told us that we could meet Jason before his stage appearance and sit with him during his autograph session! After we dropped off flyers for the fan club, Dave showed us where we would meet Jason before his talk. Marjorie Monahan(Number One) was going to be onstage at 12:00 and Jason at 12:30.At 12:15, we went to the area where we would be meeting Jason. Jackie from SF went to collect Jason, but came back alone--she couldn't find him! Later, we heard that Jason had shown up at the registration table and said "Hi. I'm supposed to be on at 12:30". Dave and Jackie collected him there and brought him down to the stage entrance where we were waiting. His hair is shorter than usual because of the haircut for Roar and he didn't have a beard, but he looked great! We introduced ourselves and told him where we were from, Dave took pictures of us with Jason, then went out to introduce him. Jason said his favorite line from Babylon 5 is when he's knocked out all the people in the bar, looks around, then says "Bugger! Now I have to wait for someone to wake up." Jason ran out and joined Marjorie onstage. We followed him in and took our seats. Jason and Marjorie were on together for a few minutes, were quite funny. They are both better looking in person than on television/film. They are the same height (6'), but she was wearing 3inch heels which made her seem taller. Jason said he had caught the 2 a.m. flight from L.A. and realized that he hadn't packed correctly. He was wearing his Jellies (for comfort) and that was all he had, so he had gone shopping and bought a pair of black boots, stylin' as he called them. Sara asked several questions, including one about his horseback riding in Roar. He used her question as a springboard to comment about the fact that the insurance companies don't want you to do anything that might result in injury - such as fight scenes. Jason said that most of the time you see Marcus in action scenes it is him. But *not* galloping on horseback! Just the closeups, the galloping parts were done by an ex-rodeo star. He was thrilled to win the Sci Fi Universe Reader's Poll category of"Which actor would you most like to see as Dr. Who?". He collected his Robby for this at the awards ceremony held during the Blackpool con and was warmly applauded by the 2500+ fans in attendance there. He was very surprised to hear that they are coming out with a Marcusdoll and was excited to learn he is going to be an action figure! Hesang Modern Major General upon request and recited several of his poems, said that he enjoyed working with the Babylon 5 cast and crew very much. When asked his favorite character, he said "the perverse Brit in me would say Zathras straight away" but really it was a tossup between G'Kar and Londo. He said that Andreas and Peter were brilliant together in their elevator scene - they did it in one take. He also loved John Cleese in Fawlty Towers and likes to read Douglas Adams' books. At the autograph session Jason was very nice to the fans, going to the trouble of personalizing the autographs, checking on name spelling, adding a tag line, and drawing a stick figure with a pike! He signed all the photos, cards, etc. that anyone wanted and, as people couldn't come behind the table for photos, he would climb up on the table to get next to the fan for their photo! He is much warmer and friendlier with the fans than most of the sci fi actors I have met in my 10 years of convention attending. Visiting with Jason, I asked about Crusade. He said that Joe had talked to him eight months ago about it and hasn't mentioned it since--and he's afraid to ask. Sara asked about pets, he said that they had a Persian that his wife had received as a birthday present, two other cats, a Yorkshire terrier, some fish, and had a hamster that they think one of the cats ate. A man named Brian came through the line, Jason said his middle name was Brian, after his Dad. He proceeded to get his wallet out and hand us his driver's license to show us. He also showed us his Screen Actor's Guild card where they had misspelled his name as Jason Cartet rather than Carter. He told us that he is working on a book of his poems and his wife is working on an illustration for the cover. During the trivia contest, held in the lower level auditorium, Jasonleaned over the balcony and answered Dave's unanswered questionregarding the name of Bill Mumy's band. Dave threw Jason the prize, abubble gum something or other, saying he'd been trying to get rid ofthat prize for years! Jason promptly threw it back! Jason and Marjorie signed autographs for over two hours and we took some more photos together. As Marina Sirtis was beginning her session below, Jason kept his voice down and asked us to do the same so as not to disrupt her talk. Jason wandered around the dealer's room for a bit, then went up to his room and fell asleep ( he told us later). Sara went back to our room, while Jenna and I got Marina's autograph and shopped in the dealer's room. We went back to the hotel afterwards and ran into Jason waiting for his ride to the airport. We took pictures of Jason in his Jellies and got good-bye hugs (Sara was envious). Sunday, Sara headed back to Memphis, but Jenna and I heard MarjorieMonahan and John de Lancie talk, got their autographs and took a picture with Marjorie. We were asked to watch for Jackie returning with Denise Crosby from the airport because she had John's luggage. Jenna had to leave for the airport after awhile, and missed them by 5 minutes. Denise was exchanged for John, then Clay and I walked Denise to the stage entrance and I ended up following her out, too! I listened to Denise's talk, got her autograph and a picture with her. Meanwhile at the airport, John de Lancie had recognized Jenna from standing lookout and they flew to St. Louis together! We had a wonderful time, Jason is a delightful person both on and offstage! The con organizers were great, and treated us so well as members of Jason's fan club. We just wished that Jason had been there for both days so we could have spent even more time with him! We plan to get together at another of Jason's conventions, look forward to seeing him again soon.
