Chapter 17

Alexis finds Stefan at home in the conservatory, where she quickly relates the recent turn of events.

Stefan: I can't believe this...Monica Quartermaine? The irony here is truly astounding....I mean, you represented the woman in court Alexis.

Alexis: I know, I know. It couldn't have been manipulated better if it had been done deliberately.

Stefan: So the evidence is irrefutable?

Alexis: Leo seems to think so.

Stefan: You will tell her?

Alexis: Of course. She should present no threat to Helena. I'm just waiting to receive the documents Leo dug up before I go see her.

Stefan: A wise decision. Would you like me to accompany you?

Alexis: I appreciate the offer, but I think it's something I need to do alone.

Stefan nods his head in understanding.

Quartermaine Mansion - Three Days Later

Reginald escorts Alexis into the living room where Monica is seated on the sofa with Alan. They are discussing Emily's upcoming school trip when Alan suddenly notices Alexis' presence. He stands to greet her.

Alan: (mildly surprised but smiling) Alexis....What brings you here this morning?

Alexis: (fidgeting) Well, Alan...actually, I needed to speak with Monica.

Monica stands, and notices Alexis' apparent discomfort.

Monica: Alexis? Is something wrong? You look nervous...

Alexis: Do I? Well, I guess that's to be expected......I uh...I have some....some news.

Monica: Oh? About the hospital?

Alexis: No...no, actually...it's more of a personal nature.

Edward enters suddenly and catches the last half of Alexis' sentence.

Edward: Hmph! That'll be the day! Any Cassadine sharing personal news has got to be a harbinger of doom.

Monica: (exasperated) Oh Edward! Hush. Let her say what she has to say.

Alexis: Actually, Monica...it's probably best, for now, if I speak to you in private.

Edward: See! I told you. Private personal news is definitely a bad sign.

Alan glares at his father and ushers him out of the room. Edward does not go quietly though, and grumbles all the way up the stairs. When his voice finally trails off, Monica looks at Alexis expectantly.

Monica: Well, have a seat....

Alexis (gratefully sitting) Thank you................(long pause)..................

Monica: Are you going to tell me or should I start guessing?

Alexis: No, no...I'm sorry...I'm just....not really sure how to begin.....(after a bolt of inspiration) Ost ver hubrigen nanya?

Monica: (confused)What did you just say?

Alexis: I said, ‘Ost ver hubrigen nanya?'

Monica: Of course I remember my mother.......Alexis, how did you know I spoke Norweigan? I haven't even told Alan where I was from.

Alexis: I'm sorry - it seemed the simplest way for me to test the information -

Monica: What information? What's going on?

Alexis: Monica...I recently did some digging on my family history.

Monica: (becoming impatient) That shouldn't have been too hard, with a family as well-known as the Cassadines.

Alexis: Please - just hear me out.

Monica shows her assent with silence.

Alexis: I've always known that I was adopted into the Cassadine family......when I was four they took me in after my parents were killed in a plane crash. For years I was forbidden to try to find out more about my family and I didn't get around to it until just recently. I had been told my parents' names and that I was from Norway, but -

Monica: (standing, with sudden realization) Good Lord.....are you saying what I think you're I saying? Are you telling me that you're Sonya? That you're my sister?

Alexis nods and begins to cry as Monica, tears streaming down her own cheeks, envelops her in an embrace stronger than any Alexis has ever felt. They cry together for several minutes before Monica draws away and stares meaningfully into Alexis' face.

Monica: I...I can't believe it! I gave up on ever finding you again....You're so grown up - well of course you are - so am I....I just....my God...Sonya.

Alexis: I know....I was just as shocked as you are. But I've been having dreams lately - of you and I when we were young. I called you Nikki didn't I?

Monica dissolves into tears again.

Monica: Yes....I can't believe you remembered. I was scared that would would forget all about me.

Alexis: I very nearly did. But, once my memory was jarred, the floodgates just opened up. I've been getting images of my mother - our mother....did she have long, blond hair?

Monica: Yes, yes she did. I have pictures upstairs if you'd like to see. I've kept them hidden in a strongbox in the closet.

Alexis: You have pictures? Oh how wonderful! I thought I'd never have a faces to go with my memory of my parents - you don't know what this means to me.

Monica: Means to you? Do you know how long I looked for you? I used all of my inheritance on private investigators trying to track you down. They told me to give up - that I was underage and would never be given custody anyway, but I had to know where you were - that you were safe....and now I do. Oh Sonya - I'm sorry - Alexis.

Alexis: No, really, it's alright. You can call me whatever you like. I'm just so glad that I've found you again.

Monica: (hugging her again) I am SO glad you decided to dig up your family tree.

Alexis: Me too.

Monica: (warmly) Come on, we'll go upstairs and I'll tell you all about our mother and father.

Alexis: I'd like that.....very much....

They head upstairs and miraculously manage to avoid both Edward and Alan en route to Monica's room. There, they pour over pictures while Monica spends hours relating family history and details to Alexis who eagerly absorbs all of it, drinking in the information about her true family. Eventually, Monica begins to question Alexis about her life with the Cassadines...was she happy? Did they treat her well? Alexis doesn't want to lie, but knows it will only hurt Monica to learn about her unhappy life as a Cassadine. Instead, she tells her about her elaborate games with Stefan and how much time they spent together. This seems to console Monica but she still wants to know more:

Monica: I can't believe so much time has passed...I mean you were a little girl - just barely beginning to become a person in your own right and then you were stolen from my life - and the Cassadines - they had you all along! I wasn't even aware that Papa knew them. They must have been business acquaintances - I can't believe they had you all that time and never bothered to tell me! I mean, surely they knew I would be concerned! And to split us up like that! The nerve of those people! Oh, I'm sorry - I know they raised you....I didn't mean to offend -

Alexis: No, no...I understand completely. The Cassadines were and always have been motivated solely by their own interests. You have every right to be outraged....as do I. I have half a mind to go to Greece and give Helena a piece of my mind before she dies.

Monica: Let me know if you do - I'd love to have a word with the old bag myself.

Alexis can't help but laugh at Monica's choice of words and before long the two are laughing uncontrollably on the bed - more delirious really at the thought of finding one another than at Helena's expense, but the laughter feels good regardless.

Chapter 18

During the holidays, Alexis and Emma spend a good deal of time shuttling between Spoon Island and the Quartermaine mansion. Only Monica is told of Emma's true parentage but Emily is thrilled to gain another cousin - regardless of blurry family trees. Edward, however, is much slower in his acceptance of Alexis and requires much of Leo's documentation to appease his skepticism. Stefan, Ned, and the other Quartermaines are eager to see the bond between Monica and Alexis grow, as it does over Christmas as they spend more and more time together, filling in the missing years. Monica is, naturally, horrified to learn of Alexis' unhappy upbringing but resolves not to let anything ruin the festive season - the first they have shared in 31 years.

One monday morning in early January Alexis is going over some contracts in the hospital library when she hears someone close the door behind him as he enters. She looks up, and her face falls immediately as she sees Luke, looking very pleased with himself, staring at her.

Luke: Ms. Davis....I've been looking all over for you.

Alexis: (trying to appear disinterested) Really...I would have thought that this would have been the first place a reasonable person would look - since this is where I spend most of my day...but then....the ‘reasonable' stipulation would disqualify you wouldn't it Luke?

Luke: Now, now...no need to be rude there cousin. Especially once you hear what I have to say.

Alexis: And I would be interested in that because.......

Luke: Because it has to do with Stavros' itty bitty baby bat.

Alexis: (removing her glasses) Nikolas is none of your concern Luke - but then, I should think you would know that by now - just how many hints do you require?

Luke: Not so fast Sweatheart - I never said anything about my wife's big mistake....

Alexis gets a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach as she sees the direction this little information session is rapidly taking.

Alexis: Then I'm afraid you've lost me completely - but then you should be able to sympathize with me on that count shouldn't you - I mean - Hell, you're lost a good 90% of the time.

Luke: Oh you're just too witty for words Ms. Davis. But seriously now - the bat of which I am speaking is the one Stavros shared with you. Is this ringing any bells in your bellfrey yet Alexis?

Alexis: I don't know what you're talking about - are you delusional or is this just another Spencer crock to try to scam my family?

Luke: Now...now, I'm not the one with the track record for scamming now am I, Ms. Davis? I mean, sure I'm an adept competitor, but really, I think the grand prize would definitely go to you. I mean, being able to hide the brat for all those years without anyone catching on -

Alexis snaps at his insult aimed at her daughter and his obviously dangerous knowledge. She begins to rise, fuming, from her seat - but as she does so, Luke deftly leans over the desk and pushes her back down - pinning her into the seat with his arms.

Luke: Now don't go gettin' all hostile on me cousin. You and I need to have ourselves a little chat, and I think you should just shut your pretty little mouth until I've stated my demands -

Alexis: Demands? Who in the Hell do you think you are Spencer? If you think a little bit of speculative information is going to get you anywhere with me or my family, you're a bigger idiot than I took you for.

Luke: (smirking as he releases her arms) My information isn't spectulative sweatheart, and if you think I'm not going to take full advantage of this little plum that's dropped into my lap than you're the idiot.

Alexis succeeds in rising from her seat and attempts to push by him and leave the room. He stops her however, and pins her arms to her sides and lifts her into the air in front of him. She struggles and attepts to kick him with one of her heeled feet.

Luke: Look! Now, you're startin' to tick me off cousin! I suggest you sit back down - NOW - and we can continue this like civilized people - though the civility of your clan has long been in dispute.

He sets her down roughly, but the instant her arms are free she nails him in the face with a solid right and he stumbles backwards with the force of it.

Alexis: How *dare* you pick me up like that you son of a bitch! If you EVER so much as touch me again -

Alexis is interrupted (just as Luke appears about to retaliate) as the library door swings open to reveal Lee Baldwin. Luke quickly composes himself, and, as Alexis straightens her jacket, mouthes the words, "We're not done" in her direction. After he leaves, Alexis quickly gathers her things and heads for Spoon Island. God only knows what Stefan will do when he finds out Luke is threatening to expose her....to Helena....yes, that's his only possible threat. God help them all if he is stupid enough to try it - and he just might be.
