TVB's own review: A drama depicting the struggle
of Ti (Cheng Tan Shui), a senior executive in Hong Kong who has been laid off
unexpectedly, in starting a business in Guangzhou. Ti was torn apart when his wife, Chi
(Lau Sin Yee) prompted him with a divorce after he lost his job. Distressed, he decided to
go to Guangzhou for a new start and retracts his ancestral house. There, he lands in a
dispute with a local merchant called Ngai (Lai Yiu Cheung). Fortunately, with the help of
Chi's cousin, Fung (Cheung Ho Yee), Ti and Ngai finally come to terms with each
other. |
![]() It's preachy, but you won't realize it at all. But maybe that's because I don't have those stereotypes ideas.... The story and the acting are really good (except for two not-so-important characters). It's a good serie for the ones who can appreciate it, even the theme-song is very good. It's a lighthearted drama, but there are a lot humorous scenes too, but they're so natural that you hardly notice it. They aren't those "laugh or I'll shoot" humor from comedys like Stephen Chiao's. With this serie I'm also beginning to like Cheung Ho Yee a lot. She did a pretty good job in this series. Sanny thought that her character was a little unrealistic? I mean, she was so good-natured, pleasant, ![]() The only problem I have with the series is one aspect of the ending. I was kind of hoping that Yue Wing Teet would still divorce his wife and end up with Cheung Ho Yee's Chai Ho Feng character. In real life, I don't think that his reconcilation with his wife would last because he was still in love with Chai Ho Feng (Cheung Hor Yee). You could tell in the last scene that he still loved Ho Feng and that Ho Feng still loved him. In real life, you would secretly hate your wife for making you not be with the one you really love and sooner or later it will lead to problems. Love can't be forced, you either love the person or you don't. If I were in his position, I would stay firm on my demand for a divorce. But it's hard to say, like that song goes, "Life goes on .... ever immune to prediction ... and life can be strange ... but only love can be stranger than fiction ... yes only love can be stranger than fiction." ![]() ![]() After realizing this I started liking his wife a lot too. She's sweet, but shows that in a "strong" way. Like how she took care of Wing Teet's father.. And her friends made her even more stronger. Like how banana (was that her name?) told her not to be easy with her husband... If I was Wing Teet then I don't know how to choose either. but becuase I've seen more pleasant "memories" with Cheung Hor Yee instead of his wife, I'll tend to give more credit to Cheung Hor Yee. And one other thing, if it were a North American TV series, Cheung Ho Yee's character would end up with Yue Wing Teet. Here, if the show sets up a "love" story between two people they will always end up together. So far, I've only seen it regularly in HK series where people who fell "in love" during a show not ending up together in the end. Here in NA, people get mad if, after you make them make an emotional investment into character, they don't end up together. I also liked the other characters in this serie. Especially Lai Yiu Cheung who played "Geen Ngaye", the flower grower from China. Every stereotypes about Chinese people seemed to be made just for him. He has a funny accent, doesn't have manners, greedy, egoistic, etc. but he's also got some very good qualitities. Like his strong spirit, extreme optimistic (These are also stereotypes, but positive ones) i think that the serie was meant for people like Yue Wing Teet who only sees the bad side of Chinese people. The point is to letting people see throught that ugly side and see the good things about them too. Conclusion: This serie is a must! It doesn't have enough to be a classic, but it's too enjoyable to miss it. |
