A very detailed summary of this serie written by Sanney Leung, but it's a major spoiler for the ones of you who wants to enjoy this serie later... Read at your own risk!

Cheung Wai Kit (Tony Leung):  He starts off as a 2-Star Lieutennant.  While on a bust, he gets injured in a shooting.  His mother is concerned about her safety so she urges him to transfer to a less dangerous job on the force.  Because he wants to please his mother and because he wants to get away from his boss, the 3-Star Lt., Hon Bun (Simon Yam), he transfers to Police Training School where he becomes headmaster. 

While there he meets his future wife, Yip Hau Yee (Margie Tsang).  They have various encounters at the Training School where she starts to fall in love with him.  He's still pining over Maggie Cheung in USA thinking that she'll come back one day.  Upon graduation, they go their seperate ways.  He stays at the training school she goes out to a precint.  She's transferred to the precint that Cheung Wai Kit was before he became headmaster so she meets all his old friends and when they get together for drinks after work they naturally invite him over too.  One night she gets real drunk and admits her feelings for him in a drunken stupor.  He doesn't react because he's still in love with Maggie Cheung but one day he gets a letter from her saying she's married.  After that, he realizes that Margie Tsang's character is really in love with him and that he loves her so they get together and eventually, after a breakup and reconcilliation, they get married. 

This takes up almost half of the show.  The other half is about the trouble Cheung Wai Kit gets into after he leaves the training school. 

One day, Cheung Wai Kit's old captain persuades him to go back out to the field.  He offers a promotion to a 3-Star Lt. as an incentive.  Cheung accepts only after talking with his mother.  His mother says that now that he's married she isn't afraid of him being back out in the field because he won't take the risks he used to because he has responsibilities now to his wife and won't be as reckless as before.  So Cheung goes back.  But the only problem is once he's back for a while,his old captain is promoted and in comes his new captain, Hon Bun, who was promoted from 3-Star Lt. (I'll finish what happens to Cheung Wai Kit later when I get to the tales of Hon Bun). 

Cheung Ging Shing (Chow Yun Fat):  Is Cheung Wai Kit's uncle, the step-brother of Cheung Wai Kit's father.  He comes down from China.  He's a doctor but he has to take the HK medical board exams to become a doctor in HK.  In his first weeks in HK he falls in love with Yip Hau Lan (Chik Mei Jun) who happens to be Yip Hau Yee's older sister.  She loves him too and soon they are engaged to be married.  The problem is Hon Bun also falls in love with Hau Lan and plots to get rid of Ging Shing.  One day, Ging Shing gets involved in a dispute with a shopowner over batteries and in the heat of the moment he mistakenly puts new batteries in his pocket instead of the old ones.  The shopowner accuses him of shoplifting and they go to the police station where, naturally, Hon Bun takes the case.  Hon gets Ging Shing to admit that he took the batteries by saying all he has to do is admit he took them and apologize and the shopkeeper will not press charges.  But he turns around and tells the shopkeeper to throw the book at Ging Shing. 

So when Ging Shing confesses he gets charged and fined, no jail, but he has a criminal record.  Hon Bun says, sorry I tried my best but the guy insisted on pressing charges.  The result is, the HK medical board will not let Ging Shing be a doctor in HK now because he has a record.  He feels ashamed and breaks off his engagement with Hau Lan leaving Hon Bun an open field to chase her. 

Ging Shing can't make a living now so eventually he becomes a smuggler of goods to and from China/HK.  One day, years later,  when he expands his "business" he has to bribe off the local cops to look the other way and, surprise of surprises, the head cop he has to bribe turns out to be Hon Bun.  (I'll finish what happens to Ging Shing in the Hon Bun summary). 

Carman, Cheung Wai Kit's half sister, (Lau Ga Ling):  She starts off the show visiting her husband in jail where he insists they get a divorce.  She agrees but with a heavy-heart.  In the first 20 episodes she is pursued, to her annoyance,  by Liu Fong's character for a while (can't remember his name).  In the last 20 she becomes involved and falls in love with an ICAC detective who is a friend of Wai Kit's. 

The ICAC guy turns out to have cancer and goes away on her too.  Saying that he has to go away for treatments, forget about me....  But she says, go away for treatments but rest assured that I'll be right here in HK waiting for you.  So while he's gone she goes to his apartment every week to clean it and stock it up with fresh food.  One day, while she's cleaning he comes back fully recovered.  They make plans to get married but this ends up in tragedy because of ... you guessed it ... Hon Bun. 

Hon Bun (Simon Yam):  The bad guy of the show.  Fist he makes life hell for Cheung Wai Kit before he goes off to Police Training School.  Then he wrecks Ging Shing's life and married Hau Lan after much pursuit and deceit.  Then comes his acts in the last 20 episodes. 

OK, Hon Bun is Wai Kit's boss again after Wai Kit leaves cadet school.  Because Hau Lan and Hau Yee are sister's they are brothers-in-law.  So, Hon Bun offers Wai Kit a "cut" in his corruption game but Wai Kit refuses.  Hon Bun is not afraid of being exposed by Wai Kit however because Hon Bun knows Wai Kit wouldn't tell because it would hurt his uncle Ging Shing. 

However, ICAC starts investigating because they suspect "something is rotten in Denmark" (just a little Hamlet reference).  So Hon Bun tries to frame Wai Kit so Wai Kit will take the fall.  When ICAC questions Hon Bun, he's all open plus when ICAC looks at his finances and expenses they see that they fall within his salary.  So ICAC starts to focus on Wai Kit and they see his connection to Ging Shing so they strongly suspect him.  Except for the ICAC guy who's in love with Carman who still suspects Hon Bun because he knows that Wai Kit would never be a bad cop. 

The ICAC guy gets evidence on Hon Bun but is killed before he can expose Hon.  This devastates Carman (and she's comforted by Liu Fong's character).  Anyway, one of Hau Yee's friends (who's in love with Wai Kit) finds out about Hon Bun's scheme (how he hides his money in bank accounts of opened with ID cards from dead criminals) and starts to blackmail Hon Bun.  Hon Bun kills her and frames Hau Yee because she told her friend to stay away from her husband.  By this time, Hau Lan finds out about Hon Bun and what he did to Ging Shing and his corruption so she leaves him. 

Hau Yee goes on trial and during the trial Hau Lan goes back to Hon Bun and tells Hon Bun that she's pregnant and that since Hau Yee's lawyers will try to throw suspicion on him she's willing to be his alibi.  Because her baby needs a father, she says.  Hon Bun agrees and Hau Lan lies on the stand saying Hon Bun was in the shower during the time of the murder.  Hau Yee gets conviceted.  During her sentencing, Hau Lan bursts into the courtroom in tears and says, "Hon Bun I love you very much and our baby needs a father but I can't betray my sister by making her take the fall for something YOU did."  So it's revealed that Hau Lan set up Hon Bun that she knew Hau Yee would be convicted if she didn't think of some plan to make Hon Bun look guilty. 

Anyway, it's discovered that Hon Bun killed the ICAC guy and Hau Yee's friend and he's put in jail.  Hon Bun breaks out though and takes Hau Lan hostage.  He wants her to go to the bank and withdraw all his corruption money so he can get away.  At the same time, Ging Shing arrives and he's captured too but not before he's able to call Wai Kit.  Wai Kit brings some cops over to the scene.  Hon Bun, knowing that it's over decides to kill everyone and shoot his way out.  He first shoots Ging Shing then turns on Hau Lan but Ging Shing gets up and stabs Hon Bun.  During this time, Wai Kit and the cops break in but Hon Bun is already dead.
