Peter Fong:

This is the remake of the light ancient comedy Luk Ding Kay. In the eighties it starred the now very popular Tony Leung and Andy Lau. It was certainly my favorite ancient comedy/drama. TVB has thought that a remake should be done, a somewhat more modern version of it, starring some fresh blood. Wai Siu Bo should now be played by Jordan Chan. At first when i heard the news I couldn't believe that, because I've always seen Jordan Chan as someone who can only act in modern movies, because he looked too modern (who can forget his act in the Young & Dangerous series?). But when I saw the first picture of him in the costume of an general in the ching dynasty, I understood what a fool I was. Jordan Chan really looked like a mandarin in the ching dynasty!! Even more than Tony Leung!! Maybe it's because of his small eyes? Or that empty impression on his face? I'm not sure... what it is, but Jordan Chan has already proved that he CAN act! This remake of DODM must be a great success.

The story is pretty much the same though. Wai Siu Bo (this time played by Jordan Chan) is the son of a prostitute in one of the biggest cities in China. Having been raised in a brothel, he has become a really sneaky playfull guy who only has a few things in mind. Beuatifull women and money. Because of some coincidence, he got the chance to work in the Forbidden City as a eunuch (but he has never lost his manhood) and he even met the emporer . Wai Siu Bo didn't know the real identity of the emporer and they became really close friends. Too bad Tony's business in the forbidden city is to assinate the emporer....

In his quest for money Wai Siu Bo met seven beautifull girls that later becomes his wife. Isn't he the luckiest man in the history?

Some people say that the wives in this remake is less pretty than the older version with Tony Leung. In my opinion, only two wives in the older version were pretty, the one who played Seung Yee and of course Carina Lau Kar Ling, (and maybe the princess too, but she had a very small part) the other wives... well, let's just say, they're not my definition of the word pretty... What? You don't agree with me? Do you think Mo Shun Kwan is pretty? Or that Sheung Teen Ngor should have played the prettiest girl in that dynasty? I don't think so...
