	The Reason Why
	By: Agent Newbeau

This is a story I came up with while watching Demons. It has nothing to
do with the episode. It was inspired by a conversation with Lady Redlum.

Okay, I guess it's time for the disclaimer. God, I really hate these
things, but I guess they're a necessary evil because I certainly don't
want Chris Carter, 10-13, or Fox to sue me because I used Mulder and
Scully in a story and didn't ask permission. He has more money than me
so any ideas he might get about suing me should be forgotten quickly.
Thank you for creating them, Mr. Carter. See, I'm being nice in hopes
you won't sue me.

Summary: Mulder confesses the reason behind one of his habits. (Not that
one!) Romance warning in effect so consider yourself warned.
Non-shippers bail out now!

And now on to the story.

He had done it to her again and she was pissed. She was always pissed
when he did this but she was more pissed off this time. She wanted to
know why he always ditched her and she was going to find out as soon as
she found out where he was. Until then she was just going to think up a
way of getting back at him.
An hour later her phone rang. "Scully."
	"It's me, Scully," Mulder said.
"Where are you?" she asked, successfully controlling her anger.
"Bridgeport, Connecticut. Look, Scully, there's nothing to go on here.
The lead I got turned out to be false. I'm coming back to D.C."
	"Fine, Mulder."
Something in her voice told him something was wrong."Are you okay,
Scully?" he asked, afraid that maybe she was sick or something.
"No, I'm not, Mulder. You ran off and left me again without
explanation. I'm tired of this and I want to know why."
"Scully, I just don't want you to get hurt, that's all," he said. the nagging voice in his head asked. He
ignored it. "I'll be back in a few hours, I got a flight that leaves in
ten minutes. We can talk then." the voice said. Again he
ignored it.
"Fine, Mulder. You can tell me what happened when you get back." She
hung up.
Mulder stared at the phone in his hand and then put it away. She had
actually hung up on him, and she had not been pleased with his actions.
This just might take awhile to straighten out. the voice said.
	 he asked back.

Back in D.C. Scully waited for Mulder to return. The case had been a
difficult one with few leads. Sometimes there just wasn't anyway to
solve a case and this appeared to be one of those. Two people had
disappeared without a trace and it seemed as if they had never existed
now.
But it wasn't the case that was bothering her, it was Mulder's actions.
He had left her to do research while he flew to Connecticut on some clue
that lead nowhere. When would he learn that she was just as capable of
handling tough cases as he was? Just because she was a woman didn't mean
she couldn't be as tough and strong as him. She'd learned plenty about
self defense from her older brothers and at the academy. Mulder just
didn't seem to realize it.
Two hours later there was a knock at the door. She knew it was Mulder
as she wasn't expecting anyone else. "Hi, Scully," he said, coming in
her apartment. "I think we need to talk."
	"About what?" she asked.
"About why I left you behind. I've thought about it all the way back
here and I do it because I don't want anything to happen to you
because-"
"Because I'm a woman?" she asked coldly.
"No, because I care about you. I mean, you're my partner and it's my
duty to protect you." He paused and took a deep breath. This was easier
than he thought it would be. "You're my best friend and I trust you more
than anybody else." He took her hand in his and looked deep into her
eyes. "Dana Scully, I love you."
She didn't say anything at first, didn't do anything. Then she put her
arms around him and pulled him closer. They kissed for what seemed
forever.
When they pulled apart, he asked, "So does this mean you forgive me?"
"This time, Mulder. Next time your punishment will be more severe."
"I look forward to it," he said and kissed her again.
