Premise:The story of a poor black family trying to make ends meet while living in a ghetto in Chicago. The character of Florida was originally the maid on the series Maude; her husband James was introduced later into the series and they later left the series to star in this one. The series was a big hit on the network, but when the viewing audience had enough of Jimmie Walker the series started to die out. It is seen on dozens of stations across the country.



1974-75

  1. Getting Up the Rent.The entire family try to raise enough money to pay the rent so they won't get evicted.

  2. Black Jesus.When JJ. paints a picture of a Black Jesus, the family find that they start having a run of good luck.

  3. Too Old Blues.The family plans to celebrate James's new job, only to find he didn’t get it.

  4. God’s Business is Good Business. GS:Roscoe Lee Browne. James’s old Army friend now a TV minister who James a job for one hundred dollars a day.
  5. Michael Gets Suspended.Michael gets suspended from school when he calls George Washington a racist because he owned slaves.

  6. Junior Gets a Patron.JJ.'s art Patron turns out to be one of James's old enemies.

  7. Sex and the Evans Family.Florida finds a sex book in the house and is shocked to find that it belongs to Thelma.

  8. Junior the Senior.Florida and James become upset when JJ is passed from one grade to another without having to earn passing marks.

  9. The Visitor.A letter written by Michael brings unexpected visitor to the apartment.

  10. Springtime in the Ghetto.Florida stands to lose the award for the best apartment because Michael brings home Ned the Wino.

  11. The TV Commercial.Florida is chosen to appear in a TV commercial.

  12. The Checkup.The family make James take a physical when they think he has hypertension.

  13. My Son the Lover. J.J. falls for a girl who is using him so she can have her portrait painted.

  14. Florida Flips.Florida appears to have a nervous breakdown.

  15. Cross-town Buses Run All Day, Doodah, Doodah. Michael has been selected to be bused to a better school across town.

  16. J.J. Becomes a Man [Part 1]. On his 18th birthday J.J. is arrested for holding up a liquor store.

  17. J.J. Becomes a Man [Part 2]. Although J.J. is falsely accused, he learns that his arrest will always be on his record.

  18. The Man I Most Admire. Michael chooses his mother for the subject of his school composition.

  19. The Encyclopedia Hustle.GS: Ron Glass. The family gets taken by a blind con man to buy a set of black history encyclopedias.

  20. The IQ Test. Michael deliberately fails his IQ test when he feels it is unfair to black people.

  21. Thelma's Young Man. Thelma becomes engaged to an older man.

  22. Florida the Matchmaker. Florida tries to get Willona married off, whether she wants to or not.

  23. The Windfall. James finds a large sum of money, but considers keeping part of it when he decides to turn it in.

  24. The Gang [Part I]. The family try to prevent JJ from taking part in a gang fight, which causes the gang leader to shoot JJ.

  25. The Gang [Part 2]. James goes to court to testify against. the boy who shot JJ.

  26. Sometimes There's No Bottom in the Bottle. Florida's visiting teenage relative turns out to be an alcoholic.

  27. Florida's Big Gig.GS: Dick O'Neil, Charlotte Rae. Florida is offered the job James was supposed to get at a department store, which makes him very mad.

  28. Florida Goes to School. Florida goes to night school to get her high school diploma.

  29. The Nude. JJ receives a commission to paint a t portrait of a nude woman, in their apartment.

  30. The Family Business. James tries to run a small appliance repair business in his apartment.

  31. The Debutante Ball. The parents of JJ's new girlfriend don't want her dating him because he comes from a poor family.

  35. The Enlistment.JJ decides to help the family by joining the Army

  48. The Mural.JJ is commissioned to paint a mural of ghetto life on the wall of a local bank.

  49. A Loss of Confidence.JJ loses his confidence when Themla’s girlfriend rejects him.

  50. Cousin Cleatus.Florida's bank robbing cousin pays them a visit when he is chased by the FBI.

  51. The Family Tree.GS: Richard Ward.Themla discovers that James’s father is alive; when she invites him home, James refuses to see him.

  52. A Place to Die.An old man comes to stay with the Evans family for the holidays. He wants to be with a loving family when he dies.

  53. J.J 's Fiancée [Part 1].JJ and his girlfriend announce that and his girlfriend they are getting married.

  54. J.J's Fiancée [Part 2].JJ and his girlfriend elope. She later runs off when he discovers she is a junkie.

  55. Sweet Daddy Williams.GS- Theodore Wilson. JJ is hired by a local gangster to paint his girlfriend’s portrait, in return for a one man exhibition.
