Jason said to keep a journal and to be nice to the women.

January 18, 1865

The women mutinied. Jason bullied them into submisson. He needs to talk to them, not at them. Why can't he see that? I asked Joshua to talk to them, but he wouldn't. Leastways, we got Jason to say a prayer and they responded to that. These are nice girls.

I can't believe Joshua!! And Jason is just letting him be so forward to the women - what will they think of us? Josh better not try to get any of them alone.

A lot of those ladies are getting sick still. Jason and Captain Clancey say it will pass. I wonder if it's really seasickness or homesickness. At least the food has improved. For a while there, I was afraid that Jason was going to make me do the cooking.

Jason is trying to get me to talk to everyone. Doesn't he know I can't do that? Dmitri, the navigator, seems nice. He is trying to teach me Russian and I am helping him with his English.

You would think Josh was in San Francisco or something. He is taking advantage of the ladies and some of them seem to be enjoying it. Jason needs to make sure that Joshua doesn't go too far with them or we will lose the mountain. I can't believe that Jason has let him do what he is doing. He says that Joshua is just breaking those girls in for Seattle. We are all going to be in trouble at this rate.

Jason and Joshua are teasing me about yesterday. I wish they would leave me alone...

Jason told me to go talk to a girl after I complained about Joshua's behavior with the ladies. The problem was finding one of them alone, but I finally saw Miss Pruitt doing the laundry and helped her. She seems very nice. But I wish Jason and Joshua wouldn't make such a big thing out of it.

February 6, 1865

Every night, Joshua has several ladies walking around the deck with him, and Candy asked me if I ever walked up there at night. We ended up looking at the stars and it was nice just being there with her. I told her that Jason told Joshua and I about Rio de Janiero being a great place for shore leave. She said she would like to see it for herself. Jason looked really annoyed this afternoon when Candy and some of the other ladies asked if they could go ashore.

February 10, 1865

We just got back from seeing Rio. Jason and Joshua are sound asleep. Just Jason, Joshua, Clancey and me went. It reminded me of those trips to San Francisco. Jason and Joshua disappeared with some ladies that they found and left me with Clancey, who just kept drinking.

Candy looked really annoyed at me when we were getting ready to go ashore. She said something about me being just like my brothers.

February 11, 1865

After asking me all about what we saw in Rio (I didn't dare tell her too much), Candy and some of the brides went to see Jason and demanded that they get a chance to go ashore as well. It is funny to see someone take Jason on, especially someone as pretty as Candy. But Jason wasn't feeling well after all last night and he ended up agreeing to take some of the brides ashore.

February 12, 1865

Jason, Joshua and I went to go see someone that Captain Clancey knows who can arrange for a tour for the brides. Jason made sure that the brides will be closely supervised and picked some things that he thinks they would like to see.

Jason is trying to get me to talk more and be sociable. I wish he could see that it's just like always. Some of the brides avoid me, because they know I can't speak right and some of them offer me all kinds of suggestions on how to talk without stuttering. I wish they would leave me alone.

February 16, 1865

Today we had a picnic with some of the brides at a place called Corcovado. Afterwards, I took Candy for a walk by one of the reservoirs. Jason said he was proud of me for not being so shy, but Joshua just wanted to know if I kissed her yet. Neither Jason nor Joshua seem to have noticed that Candy and I meet on the deck every night after supper.

February 20, 1865

Tonight Jason tried to rope me into playing my guitar and singing. And to translate for Dmitri to one of the brides.

It's funny watching Jason around the brides. He has told Joshua and me that he doesn't want to get involved with any of them on the trip, since he needs to make sure everyone gets to Seattle safely. But some of the ladies are obviously interested in him and they flock to the pilothouse every evening to be near him.
