Voyage begins. Jason says we need to be nice to the women. I will go make their acquaintance.

January 18, 1865

Met several of the brides. Tried to make them feel at home. One threw up on me.

January 20, 1865

Found a healthy bride. Not one for talking- she kept staring at me. So I proposed a little game....

January 22, 1865

Game appears to be quite popular. Jason approves. Jeremy doesn't look happy.

Little brother disapproves of my behavior. Jason dared him to go talk to a girl and of all the people, he picked that Miss Pruitt! But apparently, he did talk to her. Looked smug all evening.

I have to admit, I didn't think we would be able to find a hundred women and be able to convince them to come home with us. But we did and it has been great. I only wish we'd brought more. I am enjoying "comforting" the brides who are homesick and answering their questions about Seattle. Some of the brides are concerned that they can't dance well enough, so I have been giving them dancing lessons as well. This is the life!

Rio de Janeiro is a great place. The brides are lovely girls, but Rio has WOMEN!

February 12, 1865

Made arrangements to take the brides ashore on a tour. After Jason and Jeremy went back to the ship, I stayed ashore with some of the crew. They knew some places in Rio that Clancey didn't take us.

Jason gave me a lecture today. We are going to be taking a missionary family with us for part of the trip, and he wants me to behave myself with the brides—wants me to treat them "the way Jeremy would". Jason is so concerned about appearances sometimes. However, he and I did go ashore for one last night of fun.
