January

January 16, 1865

Today I started the voyage to Seattle. We boarded the Shamus O'Flynn late in the day. It was very hard to say good-bye to my family. I stood on deck until we lost sight of New Bedford. I wonder if I'll ever see my family again, Seattle is so far away!

January 18, 1865

After we found out the Bolts are shipping us on a Mule Scow, and a lot of the girls wanted to go back to New Bedford, things started to settle down. All the girls started to clean up the old boat (or Ship as the captain puts it).

January 19, 1865

I've been so seasick I can't eat. I'm beginning to think I should never have come. But Jason Bolt said the seasickness should only last a couple of days. I don't think I believe him at the moment.

January 22, 1865

I must admit I am feeling a bit better. I was able to go to Sabbath services. Jason Bolt preached this day, but he looked very uncomfortable. I was told the in the future the girls will organize the services.

January 27, 1865

Feeling much better now, I was able to go up on deck tonight the sunset was beautiful. It made me miss my family.

January 29, 1865

Candy Pruitt led Sunday services today, they were enjoyable. But during dinner one of the crew fell overboard and died, it's so sad the brides cried all night!

February

February 3, 1865

Captain Clancey said we will be reaching Port of Rio Janeiro where we will be stopping. It will be good to be on dry land again. He also showed us the star constellation the Southern Cross. I went for a walk on deck, saw Candy and Jeremy Bolt doing laundry. I think that they really like each other. They make a cute couple!

February 9, 1865

Saw the Light House at Cape Frio. We will be at Port of Rio de Janeiro soon! How exciting!

February 10, 1865

Jason called all the Brides together to tell us that it is unsafe to go into Rio de Janeiro, because of epidemics of cholera and small pox. But the Bolts are going ashore to find out how safe it is. A few of us wonder!

February 11, 1865

Candy Pruitt called a meeting. We don't believe them when the Bolts say it is unsafe. The Bolt brothers and Captain Clancey came back to to ship last night in a drunken state. Mrs. Stevens thought that Rio de Janeiro might be a dangerous place for us, but not the rest of us. Jason Bolt is now planning a tour ashore for the Brides.

February 12, 1865

Jason Bolt told us that we will be going ashore for a couple of days. I can't wait!

February 14, 1865

It took a while but the Brides finally got to see the city. First was the market place and then a trip to the Custom House. But the most exciting part was at the Palace. We got to see the Emperor and his family. Later we found out that respectable women are not allowed out in public all but in a carriage. What a backward place! Women should have the same rights as men!

February 15, 1865

Saw the Museum today.

Thursday, 16 February

We had a picnic at a place called "Corcovado" it is a very charming place. Captain's Walker and Baldwin joined us with their wives it was a wonderful afternoon after the picnic we all went for a walk along the reservoirs.

Friday, 17 February

Regretfully the time has come to leave, but we should get on with the jounary. A missionary and his family are joining us. Jason Bolt doesn't seem to happy!

Saturday, 18 February

We set sail this morning.

Sunday, 19 February

The missionary, Rev Simonton peached today, if you can call it that. If felt more like a lecture!!

March

Wednesday, March 1

We are about to enter the Straits of Magellan and the to the Pacific Ocean, can't believe we are almost there. But the Captain said the weather will be so bad we can only sail during the day.

Thursday, March 2

What a day! Mrs. Simonton keeps lecturing us about proper behavior and strict morals as we become wives in our new homes. How I want to let her have it but that is something a Lady doesn't do, but boy do I want too! And her daughter she is not happy with anything! I think we could handle the slow pace of our traveling if the Simonton's were not onboard!

Saturday, 4 March

Today the weather was colder, but the we all able to go ashore. Tom came with us, (he's the Simontons' son). The Brides collected stuff from the seashore at night we had a bonfire before returning to the ship!

Sunday, 5 March

Another bad day because of the Simontons' Tom forgot to ask his father about going ashore yesterday, and the Brides got his royal wrath via a sermon. Lucky Jason Bolt spoke up with a verse from Proverbs 30!

Tuesday, 7 March

It was a beautiful day, spent the morning on deck.
