Our Wedding Day
May 22, 1999
Our wedding day was perfect. Nothing went wrong that day, which is so unlike the rest of our lives. Kelly made it to the church not only on time but early. Both her chair and her sisters didn't break. The ramp worked on the van. There was no random act of violence that blocked the streets. Her dad's chair didn't break. None of the normal
catastrophe's which tend to befall my wife and her family, happened that day. I can safely say, after the fact, that my wife's string of bad luck was broken for that one day. I guess I can say there was only two near disasters.First was when Kelly almost went off the side of the ramp going up to the alter. Because she had so much dress in from of her she didn't line up on the ramp correctly and therefore her left wheels ended up going up on the little side wall of the ramp which was only about 1/2 an inch wide. I thought the priest was going to pass out when he saw that. But she made it up the ramp successfully and no one was hurt; unlike the second near disaster.
The second little problem happened in church as well, and it had to do with the ramp. Only this time it was Kristen, Kelly's sister and maid-of-honor who was involved this time. Kelly made it down the ramp beautifully. The two of us paused briefly at the bottom of the ramp so Kelly could hand her flowers to her mother and my sister, Carla could fix her train. At the same time, Kristen had started to go down the ramp behind us. She saw Carla at the bottom of the ramp fixing the train so she stopped, unfortunately she WAS wearing a slippery bridesmaid gown and WASN'T wearing her seatbelt. She felt herself starting to slide out of her chair. So she could do nothing else but keep going down the ramp into the back end of my unsuspecting sister who was 4 months pregnant at the time. Luckily my sister was quick on her feet and got away with only a tap on the back of the legs.
The rest of the day went by without any other close calls. We had beautiful weather. A wonderful ceremony and lots and lots of great wedding guests. We had about 250 people come to our wedding. I'd like to say we got around to see everyone there but I know that we didn't. Too many people to see and I wanted to spend the whole night with everyone there. I'm sure anyone who's had a wedding knows that the whole day is just overwhelming.
Kelly looked amazing. I thought I knew what to expect but as usual she completely blew me away. All in all it was probably the best day of my life.
