Setting: The Ruins
Characters: Joey, Pacey, and Dawson
Joey sits on one of the stone benches and sees Pacey approaching. "Hey Pacey." He strolls over and sits down next to her.
"Hey." Dawson is not far behind. Neither Joey or Pacey notice his presence.
Joey looks at Pacey nervously. She hopes he doesn't notice that her palms are sweating and her heart his racing. *How could he know that?* she asks herself. "So. Now that we're alone we can finally talk about last night."
Dawson, hiding in the same spot he and Jen once hid from Pacey and Tamara is confused. *Last night? Do they need to discuss what flavor of ice cream they liked?*
Pacey frowns. "Yea. I'm sorry we had to lie to Dawson."
Joey nods. "Yea. He's my best friend. I hate to hide things from him."
Dawson is shocked. *They LIED to me?! About what?*
Smiling awkwardly, Pacey begins to confess his feelings for Joey. "Look. I really like you. I just don't know if Dawson is over you yet and we really needed to make sure he would be okay with, um, this."
Joey agrees. "The last thing I want to do is hurt him."
"So. How long should we wait to um...."
She finishes for Pacey, "Tell him? I don't know. I guess we'll just have to pretend we still hate each other. I really like you too, Pacey. I mean that kiss was way more intense than my one with Dawson. It was what I expected with him. I was so surprised it happened with you." Pacey laughs.
"Tell me about it. I thought for sure you and Dawson were gonna be together. It just seemed so right."
"Yea. But we're much better off as friends. I think that will make our friendship even stronger. But when he finds out about us he'll probably be mad at me"
Pacey shakes his head. "No way. When he finds out about us he'll definitely be mad at me."
She smiles devilishly. " You know what Pacey, I don't wanna think about Dawson right now."
She moves closer to him. "I'd rather think about you."
He is taken aback by her boldness. "No problem."
They stare at each other for a moment. Neither knowing exactly how to start. Pacey laughs. "Can you say, awkward?" Joey giggles.
Again, silence falls. Pacey inches slightly toward Joey and puts his hand on her shoulder. She closes her eyes as he leans in. Their lips touch softly. Joey puts her hand on his neck as they kiss.
Dawson's jaw drops. *Oh, my god.*
He watches as they continue to kiss one another, slowly, tenderly. Dawson was surprised that Pacey hadn't already shoved his tongue into Joey's mouth. Immediately, he regretted think that way about his best friend.
Finally, when he could stand it no longer, Dawson moves out of his hiding place and into the open. He clears his throat to make his presence known.
They look up surprised. Pacey jumps to his feet. Joey sits looking flushed.
"Dawson," Pacey says quickly.
Dawson ignores him and turns to Joey. "Hey Joey."
She looks embarrassed. "Hi."
Pacey looks apologetically at Dawson. "Look we wer-"
"Ice cream. How could I have believed such a lame excuse? Man, you must think I am a complete idiot. How could you do this to me, Pacey?!"
Pacey looks shocked. "Dawson, you said you didn't like her. I was just waiting to be sure you really didn't. I'm your friend man. I really didn't want to hurt you."
Joey defends him. "He's telling the truth Dawson. What, it's OK for you to start seeing Jen again, but I can't see someone too."
"Jo-"
She cuts him off. "Shut up, Dawson. I needed someone while you were off hanging with Jen and Pacey was there for me. You think I wasn't hurting? Can't I be happy? And why is it Pacey's fault? Why?" She glares at him waiting for an answer.
He shrugs and runs a hand through his hair. "I don't know."
She laughs. "Oh, well! He doesn't know! You know what, Dawson? I don't care why. I like Pacey. I'm not in love with him, but I like him. A lot. I thought you could be happy for me. But he was right. You're just so afraid. You're a coward and a liar. And you couldn't just be happy for me. You should be grateful to your best friend. He cared what you thought. You should be happy for him, too!"
Dawson looks hurt. Pacey is staring at her with his mouth in the shape of an O. He's too stunned to say a word.
"Is that really how you feel Jo?" Dawson asks sadly.
"Yes! Now its time to apologize."
"I'm sorry Jo."
Joey releases an angry sigh. "Not to me, Dawson. Apologize to Pacey!"
She points at Pacey. His mouth is still wide open. He shuts it and looks at the ground, shoving his hands in his pockets.
Pacey shakes his head. "That's OK Jo. He doesn't have to. He didn't do anything wrong."
Her eyes narrow. "What are you talking about Pacey?!"
"I..."
She uses her hand to silence him. "No! Dawson apologize to him!"
Dawson hangs his head. "Sorry."
"It's OK," Pacey replies.
Joey is stunned. "No, Pacey it isn't! Dawson, you can't get away with everything just with an apology. C'mon Pacey let's go."
Pacey gives Dawson a helpless look as Joey drags him out of the Ruins. Dawson just glares at him.
Setting: Dawson's bedroom
Characters: Dawson and Pacey
Pacey enters through the window. He meets Dawson's angry gaze for only a brief moment. "What do you want?"
Pacey sighs. "I just came to apologize, man. I didn't get to say a word before."
Dawson crosses his arms over his chest. "So what do you have to say?"
"Can I sit down?" Pacey asks.
"I think it would be better if you stood." Pacey lets out another sigh. His eyes are focused on the floor. He looks up and to Dawson's surprise there are tears in his eyes. In a shaking voice he begins to talk.
"Okay. I really didn't want to hurt you Dawson. You're the best friend a guy could have. I mean," His voice breaks. "I don't want to see Joey if it's going to ruin our friendship."
He stops and sits down on the floor looking really depressed. A few tears roll down his cheeks. He quickly wipes them with the back of his hand. Pacey feels uncomfortable becoming emotional in front of Dawson. He puts his head in his hands. Dawson feels ashamed for getting so angry with Pacey.
"Pacey it's not your fault," Dawson says. "I'm sorry. I was just really surprised, ya know?" Pacey looks up. He is about to speak when the tears start again and he begins to shake.
"This is not my only problem." Dawson sits down next to him. Not sure how to comfort his friend, he places hand on Pacey's shoulder.
"What else is wrong?"
"It's everything. My whole life. Everything sucks. My family treats me like the scum of the earth. Even my mom is calling me a disgrace. And when I saw how mad you were, I...I..." He starts to cry again, unable to go on.
"Look. Pacey it's not your fault. You're not a disgrace and I'm not mad anymore. And if it makes you feel any better I can get my parents to talk to yours. I'm sure they wouldn't mind and maybe they could help."
Pacey shakes his head. "I don't know if that's such a good idea."
"No. It'll be great. You could stay here for a little while. I'll talk to them. And don't worry about me and Joey anymore. She likes you and I'm happy for both of you."
"Thanks." Dawson gives him a reassuring hug.
"I don't want to ruin our friendship either."
