Setting: Dawson's kitchen
Characters: Dawson, Mitch, and Gail
Dawson walks slowly down the stairs. "Mom? Dad?"
Mitch looks up from his paper. "What is it Dawson?" Gail is puttering around the kitchen and pours Mitch a cup of coffee. She turns to Dawson.
"Morning, honey. What's wrong? You look upset."
"I am. But I need to ask you a favor." Mitch and Gail exchange worried glances.
"Sure. What?" his father asks.
Dawson looks unsure about where to begin. "First, do you like Mr. Witter?" They both laugh.
"What do you think?" Dawson shrugs. "Son. He's a jerk. Not to mention a pain in the ass." Gail slaps his shoulder playfully.
"Oh, honey. You know we love Pacey, but his father is just horrible. So mean. And he has so many standards that are set way too high for normal citizens," Gail explains.
"Especially poor Pacey. His father acts like Doug is perfect and he's nothing. It's so obvious I'm sure the whole town can see that," Mitch says matter-of-factually.
"So, honey. What's this favor?" Gail asks. Dawson sits down.
"I need you to talk to Pacey's parents." They both look at him, concerned.
"Why is there something wrong?" Mitch asks.
"Yea. Pacey. He, uh, slept over last night. He was really upset."
"How upset?"
"Remember when Joey was really mean to him when we were like seven? And Pacey wouldn't stop crying, even when his mom was here?" Dawson asks, recalling the memory again.
Gail thinks for a moment. "Oh yes. I remember. Why?"
"That's exactly how he was acting last night. Crying and shaking. Sobbing. He couldn't stop. I think he really needed to do that, but after he was exhausted."
"And this is because of his father?" Mitch suggests.
"And his mom. And Doug. They have no compassion. They're ruthless. He can't have one conversation with anyone without being reminded of his failures and weak points. And he's a mess and he can't talk to them himself. That's where you guys come in."
Gail puts her hand on her husband's shoulder. "We'll do it Dawson."
Mitch chuckles. "Get ready for mission impossible."
Gail shrugs. "Now how about some breakfast?"
Setting: Dawson's room
Characters: Pacey
He awakes to the sound of voices. *They all sound so happy.* He quickly puts on his jeans and shirt and rubs toothpaste on with his finger. He washes his face and walks downstairs.
Setting: Dawson's Kitchen
Characters: Dawson, Mitch, Gail, and Pacey
"Mmmm. Smells good," Pacey says, rubbing his hands together for affect. The Leerys laugh.
"Morning Pacey," Gail greets him. Mitch and Dawson follow with the same.
"Sleep well Pace?" Dawson asks. Pacey smiles and nods.
"Yea. You? I mean I hope I didn't kick you or anything." Dawson and his parents laugh.
"Nah. You don't snore either. Just the occasional moan. But I'm used to that."
Pacey smirks. "Yea. Just can't control myself. I mean I was in the same bed with DAWSON LEERY. Just every guys dream, you know?"
Mitch finishes laughing and takes a sip of his coffee. "So, you guys have any interesting plans?"
Both boys look at each other and shrug. "Not really," Pacey decides.
"I was going to suggest a movie after work."
"Sounds good. Hey I've got a question. Were Joey and Jen really here last night or was I dreaming?" Pacey asked.
Dawson laughs. "Yea they were here. They tried to scare us. But you didn't wake up. Until you heard us laughing at you."
Pacey frowns. "At me?!" Dawson shakes his head.
"Well, at Jen really. You moaned. Loud. Jen jumped out of her skin. It was so funny. Wish you could've seen it."
"Yea. I can imagine."
Setting: Pacey's front porch
Characters: Mitch, Gail, John Witter, and Cathy Witter
Mr. Witter claps his hands together, trying to control his anger. He turns to one of his guests, Mitch Leery. "I'm sure you have this all wrong, Mitch. Pacey can really stretch the truth sometimes." His wife, Cathy, agrees.
"Gail, you don't honestly believe that we would be so cruel to our own son." Gail shakes her head.
"Honestly? I do."
Mitch returns John's withering glances. "John, why would a sixteen year old boy be crying if there wasn't a reason?" Pacey's parents look embarrassed.
Gail is disappointed in them. "Pacey has never lied to us before. Mitch, Dawson, and I have not seen Pacey cry since he was seven years old. So I believe every word he said."
Mr. Witter pounds his fist against the table. "I think that this is the biggest load of BS I have ever heard. I'm insulted that you two think you can tell us how to raise our son. You have one. We have five children. Five. Pacey being a screw-up and a crybaby is his fault, not ours and I don't appreciate you accusing me of things you aren't 100% sure of."
Cathy puts a hand on her husband's shoulder. "John, maybe they're right. Maybe we've been a little too hard on him. Gail, Mitch. Thank you for your concern. We'll talk to Pacey tonight." John looks surprised.
"But I..." She raises a hand to silence him. The Leerys are shocked to discover how much control Mrs. Witter had over her husband.
"Quiet John. Thank you for coming."
Mitch stands to shake her hand. Gail does the same. "No problem."
Setting: Joey's room
Characters: Joey and Pacey
Joey runs her fingers through her hair for the tenth time in the last ten minutes. "So?"
"So," Pacey repeats.
Joey stands. She faces Pacey, but can't meet his eyes for very long. "Dawson told me, ok?!" Pacey is confused.
"He told you what?" Joey bites her lip.
"About last night. Why you were over there." Pacey opens his mouth, but after a moment closes it again. Joey recognizes his facial expression and knew that he was angry.
"He told you?!" Joey grabbed one of his hands.
"Pacey. I don't care. He was just worried about you that's all. Don't be mad at him ok?" He hangs his head.
"I'm not." She movs closer to him on the edge of the bed. Her arm slinks around his shoulder. They look into each other's eyes.
Pacey leans in to kiss her. She meets his lips. He grabs her hand and absentmindedly rubs his fingers over each of hers. Suddenly, the door to Joey's room opens and the two fly apart.
"Pacey, your father just called. He wants you to go home," Bessie pauses. "Is everything okay in here?" She looks from Pacey's pale features to Joey's red cheeks.
"Fine, everything's fine. I was just leaving," Pacey stutters. He stumbles out Joey's door. "Bye, Joe. Bye, Bess."
Bessie turns to Joey, confused by the event that had unfolded. "Is he okay?" Joey nods.
"Fine, everything's fine."
