I Love You, I Love You Not

Setting: Dawson's room
Characters: Jen and Dawson
"Dawson are you ok?" He looks distracted and upset.
"What?"
"Are you ok?!"
"Oh yeah. Fine." He doesn't sound or look convincing.
"Ohmygod. You're jealous! You are jealous! You want her back. Or maybe you just don't want Pacey to have her. I can't believe I didn't see it before!" Dawson looks like he's going to cry.
"Maybe just a little," he says softly.
"Oh, Dawson." She walks over and gives him a hug.
"I'm such a horrible friend. Pacey is perfect for her. But I hate him for it," Dawson said bitterly.
"It's normal to feel that way Dawson. Just don't act on those feelings."
Setting: Joey's bedroom
Characters: Bessie and Joey
"So Joey. How was the movie?" Bessie asked. She took a seat next to Joey on her bed.
"Oh. Pacey and I didn't go," she said quickly. Bessie seemed confused.
"Why not?"
"He got sick. He's been under a lot of stress lately, I guess it finally caught up to him," Joey explained. Bessie nods.
"Is he ok?"
"Yea. He's better now."
"Good."
Setting: Pacey's bedroom
Characters: Pacey
Pacey is standing in front of his mirror. *Why? Why would she want me and not Dawson?* He studies himself more closely.
*Why? I could see Dawson was jealous. Joey could see it too. Maybe she wants him back. Oh please Dawson don't do this to me. Not now.* He hangs his head in fear. Fear of losing the only thing he really loves, to the only other friend he has. Silently he makes a decision and walks out the door.
THE NEXT DAY
Setting: Screenplay Video
Characters: Dawson and Pacey
Dawson walks into the video store trying to look nonchalant. *Alright Dawson. Tell him how you feel. Tell him you want Joey. Tell him you were wrong. Tell him you'll always be his friend no matter what.*
He walks towards Pacey. And takes a closer look at him. Pacey looks utterly depressed. *Oh great. I can't do it now. No. I have to do it now.* He clears his throat. "Oh hey Dawson."
He sounds sad and pathetic. *Do it Leery!* "Pacey, I know this is a tough time for you, but I love Joey and I want her back. I'll still be there for you but I'm gonna have to ask you to step aside." Dawson had his eyes closed the whole time. He opens them and sees Pacey, his eyes filled with tears.
"I can't," Pacey chokes out. "Don't do this to me Dawson. Not now. I love her too. I need her. Please don't do this." His eyes are pleading.
"If you won't cooperate, I'll ask Joey to decide."
"No! Don't do that! Please! I know she'll pick you. And I can't handle this right now. My life was coming together and now it's falling apart." He stops and a few tears spill over. He wipes them quickly and runs out of the store. Dawson is left feeling incredibly guilty.
Setting: S.S. Icehouse
Characters: The Fab Four
Pacey has composed himself and is waiting for Joey to finish working and join him at the table. She strolls over and is immediately spotted by Dawson and Jen. Joey kisses him lightly on the mouth and sits down next to him, laying her head on his shoulder. Pacey drapes one arm across her back. He lets out a shaky sigh as he sees Jen and Dawson walking over.
"Hi guys!" Jen says cheerfully.
"Hey, Jen! Hey, Dawson!" Joey replies with the same enthusiasm. Pacey smiles at Jen, but it doesn't last to Dawson. His face falls and he looks worried.
"Hey, Pacey." Pacey just stares at him. Joey and Jen start chatting away before Dawson interrupts, "Joey what if I told you I loved you?" The girls stare at him. Pacey drops his arm from Joey's shoulder. He looks away fearing what might come next.
"I'd tell you that I'm with Pacey now. That I only love you as a friend. And I'm sorry you feel that way." Pacey looks relieved. He looks at Dawson. Dawson looks hurt.
"You mean that Jo?"
"Yes, I do." Jen touches his hand. Joey looks from him to Pacey. Pacey looks just as upset as Dawson. "It's not your fault Pace," Joey says softly. "This has nothing to do with you. It's not your fault." Dawson looks at her strangely.
"Why are you comforting him?" Dawson is suddenly angry.
"Because he feels bad for you, like it's his fault. He looks just as upset as you Dawson. You are so insensitive!" She grabs Pacey and storms off. Dawson waits a few minutes and Jen motions for them to follow.
Setting: The Ruins
Characters: The Fab Four
"Pacey are you okay?"
"Mm-hm. Now I'm actually glad that my parents are letting me see a therapist." She looks at him. Her mouth is in the shape of an O. *THERAPIST?!!* Dawson can't believe it.
"A therapist, Pacey?"
"Yea Jo. Believe me. I need it. I can't talk to my folks and I have to talk to someone. They agree with me. They're gonna see him too. We're getting a family package. Sort of." He expects her to laugh at him. She pulls him in for a hug. Dawson and Jen are left standing watching the happy couple hold each other.
