The phone in Pacey's room rang shrilly, waking him from his drunken stupor. He groaned and reached to pick it up.
"Hello." There was silence on the other end. Pacey sighed. "Okay, I'm hanging up now."
"Wait!" came a high-pitched female voice.
"Andie," Pacey whispered.
"Yes, Pacey. It's me. I wanted to, um, see how you were. How are you?"
Pacey tried to choke back the emotions that were beginning to overwhelm him. "Fine. And yourself?" He realized how weak his voice sounded and was instantly embarrassed.
"Great, great. I want to apologize for making Jack do my dirty work. I'm sorry, Pacey. I just didn't want to hurt you."
"I know. It's okay, Andie." He felt his spirits lift as he said her name.
"Listen, Pacey, I know this must be rough for you. Is there anything you want to tell me. Because Dawson told me I should call you. So, I..."
"What?! He...he told you to call me?! Is that the only reason you...I can't believe..."
"He told me he was worried about you, Pacey. What is wrong with you?"
"Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Everything's just fine!"
"Are you all right? Seriously, Pacey. You don't sound fine."
"How could something be wrong, Andie? I've only been dumped and ditched in the same week. I feel great!" He realized that he had started to cry. He let out a sob. "I can't talk right now. I, uh, I have to go. Bye." He hung up the phone.
Pacey collapsed back onto his bed and began to shake. "Oh, Andie. Why did you do this to me?!"

"Okay, Dawson. Yes. Yes. I know. Okay! Good-bye!" Joey slammed down her phone. Then she walked into the tiny Potter kitchen.
As she was about to leave Bessie called to her from the den. "Joey! Would you come here for a sec?!" Joey made a face and reluctantly went into the den.
"What, Bessie?"
"Joey, I have to go to the Icehouse. Julie says there's an emergency or something. Can you please watch Alexander while I'm gone?"
She shook her head. "Not right now, Bess. I have to go to Pacey's. There's a bigger emergency than whatever is happening at the Icehouse." She turned and tried to leave.
"Please, Joey! I don't think Pacey's problem is more important than the Icehouse."
"Well, it is. So call Dawson to watch Alex or something. I can't."

Mr. Witter slowly opened the front door. He was still uneasy about letting anyone bearing the Potter name into his home.
"Hello, Joey," he said without any emotion. Joey frowned, knowing that Mr. Witter didn't like having any social relationship with the members of her family.
"I'm here to see Pacey, Mr. Witter," she replied with the same lack of enthusiasm. "Is he home?"
He frowned when she said Pacey's name. Joey decided he had probably found out about Pacey's drinking.
"Yes, he's home. I'm just not allowing him to see any visitors."
"Mr. Witter, I'm here to help him. Please let me just talk to him for a little while."
"Fine. But not for very long. He doesn't deserve the friends who care about him, the way he's been acting lately."
"I agree. But I'd still like to help him."
"Go ahead. You know where his room is." Joey moved past the large man and quickly ran up the stairs to Pacey's bedroom on the third floor of the Witter household. She had never before thought that Pacey's family may have opted for him to stay on the uppermost floor so they would see less of him. It made her family seem like the Cleavers.
Upon reaching his door Joey paused before knocking. She knew he didn't really want to see her or anyone else. Pacey had been in funk for what seemed like a long time and didn't show any signs of coming out of it. She shrugged and decided to give it a shot anyway.
Once she had knocked she heard Pacey groan. *Probably drunk again.* He opened the door soon after.
"What do you want?" Joey gave the once-over and frowned. His hair was disheveled along with his clothes. His skin was pale, eyes red and she could detect dried tears on his cheeks.
"I came to see you, dumbass. Why do you think I'm here?" She laughed expecting him to do the same. He didn't.
"Leave me alone."
"No. I won't leave this time. Pacey, you have a problem and we're going to discuss it like mature human beings. Now let me in." He scowled but moved slowly out of her way.
"Just check the sarcasm at the door, Joe."
"Sorry." He sat down heavily onto his bed. Joey noted the smell of alcohol in the air. She shook her head sadly and sat beside him.
"What happened, Pacey? Why are you doing this to yourself?" Pacey laughed. Leave it to Joey to be as blunt as possible.
"I got dumped by the love of my life and rejected by the best friends I've ever had. All in one night. That would throw anybody for a loop."
"Some loop. Drinking, Pace? I thought you were smarter than that."
"Guess not."
"I think you are. Andie dumped you, huh? Why?" She looked at him and saw tears forming in his blue eyes.
"She found a new boyfriend in Providence. I knew from the beginning she'd eventually find someone better." One tear rolled down his cheek and he quickly wiped it away. Only two people had ever seen him cry and he didn't want that number to go up any higher.
"Don't say that, Pacey. You're a great guy." He laughed.
"Sure I am."
"Yes. You are. In my opinion Andie's the one who's missing out here. There's no way the guy she found could be better than you."
"Yes, there is. She could meet the biggest jerk in the world and he'd be better."
"That's not true. You're funny and smart and sweet and any girl would be lucky to have you. The changes you made in your life this year were incredible and I admire you for that." Pacey stared at her incredulously. He could feel a knot at the back of his throat and knew that if she said one more nice thing to him he would most certainly start to cry.
"Thanks, Joey." She smiled at him and pulled him into a hug. He wrapped his arms tightly around her and rested his head on her shoulder. A few tears slipped down his cheeks but he made no attempt to wipe them away. Gently she pulled away from him to look into his eyes.
"Anytime, Pacey." He suddenly felt the urge to thank her again, but couldn't find the words. Instead he opted for a kiss. Joey was shocked at the softness of his mouth and found herself not wanting to pull away.
