Dear readers,
I came up with this tragedy idea when I saw a page that had a special section for tragedy. I have read many terribly sad books and am somewhat curious of cancer and the affects it has on people. I am merely using the characters on Dawson's Creek for satisfaction of my curiosity. I love Pacey! So don't be mad at me. I'll write a happier series soon. And I would also like to inform you that I have researched the topic so all my info should be correct.

*When I write a characters name underlined that is the person's thought on what has already happened. I will often put that in the middle of part of the story. The story always continues where it left off afterwards.*

Joey walked out of school and looked at her watch. It was three o' clock. If she ran as fast as she could so she would be able to stop at Pacey's and make it to work on time.

As she walked up the front steps to the Witter house, Doug was running out. "Hey Doug."

"Joey. Have you seen Pacey?" he asked.

"No."

Doug cursed under his breath. "He took off as soon as we got home. My folks are pretty worried." Something in Joey's mind clicked. She knew exactly where he was.

"I'll find him, Doug." He looked skeptical. "Really, I know where he probably is."

"Great. Thanks."

Pacey had been walking around and found himself in the Ruins. So many important firsts had happened here. He sat down on one of the benches.

The news he had received only a short while ago was sinking in. He let out a choked sob, just as Joey was approaching. She stood silently, watching him cry and shake.

Finally, he noticed her. He looked away, embarrassed, and wiped his eyes with his sleeve. "Please leave, Joey," he said in a soft voice. "I need to be alone."

"No. You don't Pacey." He fought a fresh wave of tears. She moved closer to him and placed a hand on his shoulder.

He put his face in his hands and started crying again. He hadn't wanted to do this. Not in front of her. He needed to be strong in front of her. That's partly the reason he had ran from his parents. He hadn't wanted their comfort, he didn't want anyone's comfort. He slowly let the emotion run out of him.

This wasn't happening. Not to him. It couldn't be. He stood up and walked to the far side of the Ruins. Joey followed. "What is it, Pacey? What's wrong with you?"

He sighed deeply. "I have a brain tumor." No wonder he was so upset. She started to cry, too. Pacey turned and wrapped his arms around her.

LATER THAT DAY

Dawson sat in his room watching TV. Joey climbed quietly through the window. "Hey, Dawson." Her eyes were red and it was obvious she had been crying.

"Joey what's wrong?"

"Pacey. He has a....." Her voice trailed off and she let out a sob. Pacey had completely shut her out after they talked. Loads of crap about wanting to be alone. He wouldn't hug her anymore and he wouldn't talk about it. She could tell he was in denial. He had stalked off, pretending nothing was wrong. She had felt so alone and now she felt safe in Dawson's arms.

"Joey? Can you tell me what's wrong with him?" She nodded. "He has," she pauses, "a brain tumor." Just saying it sent her into hysterical sobs. Dawson looked stunned, but he held Joey close anyway. He felt that she needed him, that maybe Pacey wasn't able to comfort anyone but himself. It wasn't selfish, just logical. Soon there was a knock on the door.

Jen's soft voice was barely heard. Dawson released Joey and opened the door for Jen. "Hi guys. Oh my god. Joey what's wrong?"

She sat next to her and put an arm around her shoulder. Dawson thought it best that he explain. "Pacey has a brain tumor, Jen."

"What?!" Joey nodded.

"Yea. And he......he......he's being such a jerk, too. He wouldn't talk to me or say anything. Just, 'I need to be alone Joey. I'm gonna be fine. I just need to be alone.' But he doesn't need to be alone. He's acting like nothings wrong. He needs to talk to someone, but..." she stopped and started sobbing again.

Jen was worried, too but Joey was willing to receive comfort at the moment and she knew it was best to give it to her.

Pacey sat, silently staring at the TV at the foot of his bed. It was on but Pacey couldn't hear a sound. His head hurt and so did his stomach.

He felt kind of bad about not opening up to Joey. But not that bad. He was the one who was sick, not her.

It wasn't fair. Everything came rushing back. He started to cry again. Tears and emotions that he had fought against had hit him like a train. He stopped when he saw his door starting to open. Well, tried to stop.

His mother walked quickly to his side. Pacey wasn't used to receiving comfort of any kind from his parents. He didn't want any. But his mother new that he needed it. She pulled her youngest son into a hug and let him cry.

When he finally stopped he felt better. "Thanks, Mom." He wiped his eyes.

She gave him another quick hug. "Anytime, Pacey. Anytime. Good night." She stood and squeezed his hand gently. "Love you, Pacey."

He felt a wave of emotion. "Love you, too Mom." She smiled and walked out. Pacey lay back, feeling the best he had felt all day.

THE NEXT DAY

Joey woke up in Dawson's bed feeling exhausted. *Thank god it's Friday!* She stretched and started to put on her shoes. Dawson stirred and sat up.

"Morning already?"

"Yea, Dawson. But its Friday, remember?"

"Mm-hm. You feel better Jo?"

"Much better. Thanks. You and Jen made me like things could possibly get better. Now I just have to convince Pacey of the same."

"Jen and I can help you with that too."

"Yea. I mean at lunch you can help me talk to him, right?"

"Of course."

"Good."

Pacey saw them. They hadn't seen him yet. He watched Dawson and Joey head for Joey's locker. Slowly Joey was turning in his direction. He ducked into his homeroom just in time.

"That sandwich looks so yummy Jen." Joey was practically drooling. She had forgotten hers.

"Want half?" Jen offered.

"Really? Yea sure!!" Joey eagerly grabbed half of the sandwich and started eating. With her mouth full she spoke.

"Feen Pafey yep?"

"In English, Jo," Dawson said sarcastically. She swallowed and laughed.

"Seen Pacey yet?"

Dawson sighed. "No. He avoids me in every class."

"Me, too Joey. I tried to just say hi, but he practically ran away from me." Jen shook her head sadly.

Joey looks up. "Here he comes." She waved. He turned and walked out of the cafeteria without even a smile.

Pacey heard Joey calling him. He really didn't want to deal with her. "Pacey!! C'mon, Pace. Talk to me please!!" He gave in and stopped. He turned to face her.

"How come your not going to eat?" He shrugged.

Joey smiles. "Look. You don't have to apologize or anything for yesterday. I completely understand." He shook his head, looking angry.

"I don't have any reason to apologize to you. Just because I want to deal with things by myself doesn't make me wrong. I don't need pity, Jo. And I have bigger things on my mind then apologizing for feeling sorry for myself. I'm allowed to feel that way. You're not sick! I am! But, you get all the sympathy and concern. I'm expected to make you feel better. It's not gonna happen." He turned and walked away.

Dawson had been standing nearby and heard the whole conversation. He was so mad at Pacey. He ran right past Joey and grabbed Pacey's shoulder.

Pacey looked him right in the eye. "You are so selfish Pacey!!" Then Dawson shoved Pacey violently to the ground. Pacey looked so hurt. Pacey stood and Dawson could see the tears in his eyes. Pacey looked at Joey. She had tears running down her face. In a choked voice Pacey apologized.

"Joey I'm so sorry. Dawson you, too. I...I'm just so scared." He started to cry. Joey put her arms around him.

*You did good Dawson.*
