LEWIS
Chakotay, Harry and Seven were the away mission all a small planet. They were searching for resources and supplies at an old mining colony. "There isn’t anything useful", said Chakotay. "There are traces of deuterium, but it has all been removed". Suddenly Kim heard a small cry. "What’s that?" he asked as he searched. "Over here", said Chakotay. He lifted up a small boy. "Who are you, son?" Chakotay asked. The boy whimpered. "They call me, Prisoner 37", he managed. The child was about two Earth years old. "What happened here?" asked Seven.
"Everyone left. Not me", the boy started crying again. "Let’s take him to the ship", said Chakotay. "Here", he passed the boy to Seven so he could call the ship and soon they were all on board. They all reported to the Captain’s ready room. "So we have a visitor?" said the Captain smiling at the boy. "Tell me what happened". The boy frowned, "Mom and me have to work hard mining. They say no more work. Shoot everyone, but I run. No one remember me. Spaceship leaves. I alone", he explained simplistically. Captain Janeway sighed in sympathy. "What’s his name?" she asked Chakotay.
"They called him, Prisoner 37, obviously they were slaves. We passed a space station yesterday, I recommend asking there to see who we’re dealing with", he replied. Janeway nodded, "Seven, take the boy to the Doctor". Everyone left and Seven made her way to sickbay. "Who are you?" asked the boy.
"I am Seven of Nine. You may call me Seven", she answered taking him inside. The Doctor looked at the boy, puzzled. "We found him on the planet surface. He was a slave," Seven explained handing over the child. "Hey there! What are those scratches? I’ll fix them up, okay?" said the Doctor smiling as he put him on a biobed. The boy smiled for the first time since he’d left the planet. "Who are you?" asked the boy, eager to learn more about these people. "I am the Doctor. I’m a hologram", replied the Doctor treating his wounds.
"What’s a hologram and what’s your name?" asked the boy.
"A hologram is a person or thing made up of light. I can’t go anywhere without this little device", the Doctor pointed to his portable emitter, "And well, I don’t have a name. How about you?"
"I’m always called Prisoner 37", he explained.
"We’ll have to think of something else to call you. How did you become a slave?"
"My mom said people take her from home in spaceship and take here. She say I born on planet, but daddy at home", he said happy to have someone to talk to. The Doctor frowned, "How’d you get these scratches and that burn on your back?"
"When people mad…" the boy didn’t need to continue. The Doctor looked angry, but remained calm. "Let’s go and get some food," he volunteered. When the three arrived at the mess hall, Neelix ran over. "So this is our latest guest. How do you do…" he began waiting for a name. Seven intervened, "He requires food". Neelix frowned, "All I have at the moment is some Leola root stew". Tom walked over and joined them at their table. "You’re supposed to feed the kid, not poison him!" Tom exclaimed. "Get him some ice-cream", he said giving Neelix some replicator rations. He lifted the boy onto his lap, "You’re going to love this," he said as Neelix returned. The boy grabbed the spoon and tasted the dessert. His grin reached from ear to ear as he quickly ate the rest. "Really, Mr. Paris, I was expecting to give him a meal, not ice-cream", said the Doctor disapprovingly. Tom ignored the Doctor, "I’m Tom", he said to the boy. "I hear you could use a name".
The boy nodded, "Prisoner 37 isn’t very good".
"Quite right", he nodded, "What do you guys think?"
"How about David?" wondered the Doctor.
"No. I can’t think of a good one. What do you reckon, Seven?"
"Perhaps Lewis", she tried. The Doctor opened his mouth, but the boy began talking.
"I like it!" he said happily.
"I don’t know", said the Doctor.
"Oh come on, Doc. That’s your creators name. You should be proud. Well gotta go. Look after Lewis here", Tom said sitting the boy on his own chair and leaving. "I’m not hungry anymore", said the boy leaning back on his chair. "It is late. You may require rest", said Seven standing. The Doctor grabbed the boy’s hand and they walked to the quarters that the Captain had set aside for Lewis. The boy ran to the bed and jumped in. "Can you stay here? I miss my mom", said Lewis begging. "I shall remain in these quarters", said Seven leaving his room to sit on the couch. "Wait. My mom always sang to me", Lewis said sadly. The Doctor looked at Seven who nodded. They sang him to sleep and soon Seven followed.
Seven awoke to see the Doctor sitting besides her. He was playing with her hair. For a moment she didn’t know where she was then remembered she was on the couch in Lewis’ quarters. She had fallen to sleep, while talking to the Doctor early in the morning. She sat up quickly. "He’s fine", the Doctor answered. "It’s still early. You can go back to sleep", he said softly. Seven was tired, so she leaned on the Doctor’s shoulder and was soon asleep. The Doctor smiled, but within a couple of minutes Lewis woke up and came over. The Doctor put his finger to his lips, so that the boy would not wake her. The boy sat on his lap and went to sleep. The Doctor tried to stop his laughter and had to stay like this for another two hours. When morning finally came, Seven woke first. The Doctor was grinning from ear to ear. He whispered, "Lewis decided to join us", when Seven saw the child. Seven didn’t move from leaning against the Doctor. Her comm badge chirped,
"Janeway to Seven". "Seven here", said Seven, who was rather wishing she could spent more time with the Doctor.
"We’ve spoken to some people on the space station. Could you come to my ready room and bring the boy?" the Captain asked. Seven reluctantly replied, "We’re on our way".
The Doctor grabbed the still sleeping child and they went to the ready room. The boy awoke. Seven sat across from the Captain and the Doctor handed her Lewis. "It looks like you two are playing parents", said Janeway smiling. "Well, apparently the people who stole the boy…" she began.
"Lewis", Seven corrected.
"Yes, Lewis…are called the Fratgi. They believe Lewis is a Humem, a race of people who live fairly far away. We won’t reach the planet for another month."
"We believe Lewis’ father may still be alive", said the Doctor.
"Great. He’ll have a family when he returns then", the Captain said thankfully.
Seven, Lewis and the Doctor exited. In the turbolift Lewis said sadly, "I don’t want to leave here!" The Doctor frowned, "You have to go back to your father".
"I don’t know him", Lewis answered.
"I am sorry, Lewis", said Seven. They rode in silence until they reached sickbay. "Would you like to play with my holo-camera?" asked the Doctor. Lewis immediately forgot all his problems and started asking questions, "What’s a holo-camera?"
"You take pictures. I’ll show you", the Doctor said as they reached Sickbay. The Doctor took several pictures of him, Seven and Lewis sitting on the biobed. After Lewis understood how it worked, he started pulling faces and having fun. "Can I take a picture?" he asked. The Doctor showed him how. The Doctor sat next to Seven. He looked into her eyes and saw that she couldn’t bear to lose Lewis. Lewis took the photo. "I did it!" he screamed happily. "Good boy. Take some more around sickbay. I need to talk to Seven", the Doctor said, leading Seven into his office. He offered her his chair and sat on his desk. "He has to go home, Seven. I hate it too," he said as supportively as he could. "I understand", Seven said, but the Doctor could see the pain in her eyes. He cupped her face in his hands. "We have a month. We should make the most of this time. It’s not fair that you should have to face this pain twice", he said referring to One. Seven nodded sadly. The Doctor kissed her forehead softly and they went back to Lewis.
The first two weeks passed, mostly uneventful. The Doctor and Seven spent their nights on the couch in Lewis’ quarters mostly. Seven spent much less time in Astrometrics and the Doctor in Sickbay. There was always one of them looking after Lewis. One day Seven walked into sickbay looking for Lewis. "He’s not here", said the Doctor smiling. "You need a break. You’ve hardly slept. So Mr. Paris offered to look after Lewis". The Doctor took her arm and they began walking out of sickbay. She gave him a look that clearly said that she should be looking after Lewis. "Don’t worry. We’re just having a night off", said the Doctor as they reached the Holodeck. As they entered, the beautiful scene astounded Seven. "Where are we?" she asked. "The holodeck", said the Doctor jokingly, "Earth". He put her arm around her waist tickling her side. She smiled and jumped in surprise. "Hey, you’re ticklish", said the Doctor laughing. He chased her trying to get her to laugh. They stopped by a small pond and sat down beside it. "You can express your feelings around me you know, Seven", said the Doctor. Seven smiled and laughed softly. The Doctor grinned from ear to ear. "You have a beautiful laugh", he said. Seven tried to tickle the Doctor for revenge. The Doctor burst out laughing, "I’m not programmed to be ticklish". They lay on the green grass looking at the sun as it set. "These have been the best days of my life", said the Doctor staring at Seven. "I agree", said Seven staring back, "I wish it didn’t have to end".
"Lewis has to return to his father, but that doesn’t mean this has to end. It hasn’t just been Lewis that made these days special, it was you. We could still spend time together, frankly, if we don’t continue seeing each other all the time, my program will be pointless. I’d miss you too much to think about anything else", said the Doctor looking into her eyes. "I love you", said Seven leaning against him.
"I love you too".
Voyager eventually reached the Humem planet. The Captain contacted the leader of the planet’s communications. She explained the situation and Lewis’ father was informed and waiting to greet his son. The crew, who had become attached to Lewis, all said their farewells. Seven, the Doctor and Lewis were in the Transporter room. The Doctor handed Lewis his holo-camera. Lewis’ eyes lit up, "Thanks, Doctor", he said and hugged him. The Doctor hugged him back. Seven’s eyes were filled with tears. Lewis ran into her arms. Seven didn’t want to let go. The Doctor had to pull them apart. "Bye", said Lewis simply as he stepped onto the Transporter pad and shimmered away. The Doctor held Seven in his arms until she stopped crying. He left one arm around her and they left, putting the pain behind them and preparing themselves for the rest of their lives, which would inevitably be together.
